As a fellow tool nut, I love the classic craftsman “crown logo” tubing cutter! 50/60 years old and made better than 90% of the garbage put out today 👍🏻
Amen. I have the same tubing cutter, bought several decades ago. A Sears Craftsman and so old it's marked "MADE IN USA."
Lighting looks great! Thanks for the information on club repair.
Amazing video!! You’re really good and cranking shafts! Thanks for the knowledge!
For graphite I use a Dremel with fine abrasive cutting wheel. Cuts perfectly
I used a pair of vise grips as a guide for the rod saw. Worked great. Kept the cut nice, and straight.
Nice video, I used the same style tube cutter which I bought from GolfWorks, not a Craftsman though, its made in China. Also bought a separate cutting blade (wheel) from Golfworks specifically for graphite shafts. Just had to unscrew the blade for steel shafts and replaced it with the cutter for graphite. Works great
Really enjoy all the videos. Thanks
Glad you like them!
If it’s a struggle for you to prevent slicing the ball. I strongly recommend to shorten the driver shaft by 1 to 1.5 inches. I just figured this out
Tubing/pipe cutters work great.
on steel yes
Looking good and HD. lol. Great video I need one of these
Thank You! - Doug in Iowa
Always great content delivered in your unique way. Thanks Jim
Great stuff, cheers!
Good video. Love the new lighting, also.
If you wrap 2 or 3 wraps of masking tape tightly around the graphite shaft you can use a fine tooth hacksaw blade and get a good cut straighter than that rod saw. With a Dremel and a regular or heavy duty fiber cutting wheel you don't need the tape and it is much quicker.
@Paulonbass75 I usually clean up my cuts with a sanding block and can keep within 1/16" of my desired length.
To prevent any splintering on cutting graphite I suggest some masking tape over the graphite before you cut with a rod saw.
Paul Blackshaw that is a great tip. I just plain forgot. Yes we used to do that but the saw was new and cut easily. Well done and thanks for the tip
@@McGolf How big of an issue is it, if the shaft does splinter a bit? I had it happen on the grip end of a 2i I threw a graphite shaft in. Splintering was probably 1/4" inch wide, and 2.5-3" long. I put a real light layer of epoxy over it hoping that would stop it from getting worse.
thanks for this great help for an amateur club tinkerer...
Thanks for the video !!
Love your Stuff.Keep up the good work
I am trying to find the trimming instructions for the Fujikura graphite shafts used in the SLDR irons. I am wanting to change my iron shafts to a lighter weight. I have been working on clubs for many years, but not to your level of expertise. I have just started watching you and enjoy everything. Left you a message the other day, when you mentioned Seattle, that I live in Allyn.
Thank you
Love the content! question? Did you make up your angle grinder holder housing? looks amazing
For the shaft cutter/tubing cutter, do you need a special blade for graphite shafts vs steel shafts?
Son broke my driver shaft just above the hozel. Trying to salvage. Graphite shaft. Heat and step drill cleared the head. Now need to trim the shaft...will dremmal-tool work? Only need 1/2 inch or so.
Lookin good the lighting! :-)
Love ur videos,,I'm leaning on buying a used driver at a good price, but it 48",and it's senior flex & I'm 5'5",, can I have it cut a full 5"?,,, please reply with ur thoughts ty,
Good stuff!
I just cut down a 46"driver to 45, it was not that hard, but i had to protect the end with extra tape.
Thanks!!!
Being 5’6 a tubing cutter is my best friend
I inherited 2 System Flex KF1 Ultralite graphite driver shafts. Can you help me with tipping instructions. Or help me figure out what their raw flex is. I'd like to build a driver with them. Thank you in advance for your time and assistance. Scott
Hi, short question if you change/ remove a stell shaft from the head: Won't the ferrule melt when using the hot air pistol on the shaft? It is plastic in the end. If yes, how to prevent this from happening and messing up the shaft? Thanks a lot for help!
only apply heat to the hosel, a little at a time until the head pulls off. That shouldn't be hot enough to melt the ferrule. Also good to have extra ferrules on hand.
Love your videos sir. I was wondering if you do cut off some of the shaft from (the grip end) will it affect the lie angle of the club? I am 5’5” short and stocky and my irons are standard length but are too long. A professional at a country club also mentioned they were too long and advised I just trim my shafts. I wanted to have your take on it since I would trust your advice much more. Thank you sir.
First Lie angle is determined dynamically, and is a relationship with the length of the club. for a shorter golfer, certainly shorter clubs are warranted unless you have an extraordinarily flat swing plane. if not when you cut the shaft to the PROPER length the lie angle may just to you. once you find the right length then test for the lie for the clubs to work their best
McGolf Custom Clubs Thank you I appreciate your advice I will take that into consideration. Keep up the good work.
I also forgot to mention, how do I know how much to take off of my shaft? Like I said I am 5’5” and my wrist to floor measurement is 31.50”
@@vins8690 I am the same measurements as you. I’m 5’5 and pretty stocky body. Did you ever figure out what worked best for you? It’s been 2 years since you posted this comment, but I wanted to see what ended up working best for you
@@killermaster16000 I basically followed a sizing chart. I went on google I believe taylormade had a custom golfer size chart and they tell you how much to take off. I needed around an inch off each club. I’d double check to see if they have a size chart or any company and try to go by that. I no longer have my clubs when I did that since it was two years ago, but my new ones are now professionally fitted. The clubs I customized were actually great and I played so well with, I was actually shocked at how good of a job I did. Hope this helps.
Hi Jim can you do an indepth video on how to add/remove swing-weight to clubs please.
I have a chance to get a set of Mizuno irons with dynamic gold s 300 small band (og) they are 1.5 in length over standard and 2 degree upright if I cut off 1.5 in back to standard what will the effect be
I’ve also used an arrow saw to cut clubs
Good stuff
Is that an angle grinder just in a stand? Seems like you could make a jig. What type of blade are you using?
I have a 1 iron that I never use and want to swap out the shaft with a broken 7 iron. Can I cut the shaft at the tip to save the grip, or do I have to cut at the butt?
how do you get a straight cut on a tapered shaft? or is straight not necessary?
Hi! Great video Jim! One question, I broke my 6 iron steel shaft on a normal swing. I used to have a 3 iron from the set but changed it for a 60 wedge, and i want to use the shaft from the 3 iron, cut it as the 6 and install it! So my question is, is this shaft different from the 6 iron, or the shafts are all the same and just different length?
I would put them all on the floor and check it...maybe the parts from where it goes small to big( length wise) are longer on a 3 compared to a 6. So you might have to cut it from the bottom to get it right.
you could use the same shaft HOWEVER it would need to be tipped more to get the right flex which may or may not need a extension depending on length afterwards..
How do I remove old tape from a graphite shaft?
How do you cut the shafts without putting the heads on each one and doing them one at a time. I know the sequence is one half inch so how do you do that. I know that sounds stupid.
For prepping a shaft tip by hand, what grit sandpaper would you recommend?
100 is a good grit for that work
What glue do I use for repairing a graphite shaft to the head. PVA Acetate ?
I use 3m DP 810 or 420 black either works well
Hi Mcgolf, can you explain me the difference between a Taper and a parallel shatf and what should I install in my Titleist sm6 wedges?Thx
Would the same method work for a driver shaft? My new one seem longer than my old one and no sure where to make the cut.
What a good two part epoxy I can buy at an auto parts store or Home Depot that’s quick and easy to clean up (for replacing a putter shaft/changing putter shafts) ???
I rather you didnt. The cure or break point would not be compatible. you can get some one time applications at goflworks
Can you do this Golf tips? I do butts of the clubs but wanted to work on tips now.
I just cut my graphite down with hack saw very slowly work fine hey every one to them selves wat ever works
Thanks for the video. Any suggestions on how to hold a steel shaft into place for tip trimming?
Aaron Bae a simple clamp and vice will do the job
@@McGolf Thank you.
As always great content. Shop looks great. Can't wait until I can head back down. Question: do you build products from Cleveland golf? I am thinking of those hybrid irons.
I don't deal with Cleveland sorry
Could you just use a grinder for both steel and graphite?
I used a edge grinder on a steal shaft.
Lightning good..
I was wondering if you need such a large pipe cutting tool, could one use a smaller model and if so how small?
as long as it gets around the tube you should be good. You just wont have the torque for turning it easily
What exactly should one use to cut off a graphite shaft? I have a angle grinder and a hacksaw. Which would be better to use? Thanks.
Darrell Pace the angle grinder with an abrasive wheel is best
Great channel! Can you share what base you use for your grinder that you have hooked up to the foot pedal?
Eric Bolton the foot petal is attached to my cut off wheel from golf works. It came as a unit
What about a Dremel cut off wheel for graphite?
The too would work
Maybe a weird question but what if I cut my irons without removing the grip? Would it matter much if they are open at the end?
I suppose you could but the grip would also be small. I would not recommend it
@@McGolf I am not a big guy and my hands are pretty small( kids size), also not that rich to buy 7 new grips. I am probably the poorest talented golfer in the world...lol Everything I have I got for free. Clubs, bag and trolley so that was pretty cool. But those Nike CCI's I have are just a tad too long.
Hi Jim. Another good video. I’ve a question for you. If I butt trim my cobra f7 driver by an inch. How would I get the proper swing weight??
THe cleanest way would be to contact CG and ask for a set of heavier weight to install in place of the originals. Tell them you are weighting to a 44.5" driver.
Does cutting or extending your club’s change the shaft flex and/or club lie angle?
flex not lie is not physically changed but your new stance to the ball may require an adjustment
shortening a club stiffens the shaft, extending it softens it. Will also affect swingweight. Every 1/2" is worth 3 swingweight points
I found this video a month late, but it's Tuesday, so I'm good right? LOL
When you're determining shaft length, say 3" need to come off the blank, do you cut 1-1/2" from the butt and 1-1/2" from the tip? Or what please explain.
Only off the butt end unless you want to stiffen the shaft which is not the case normally.
You first trim for flex ( typically from the tip) then the trim for length after install on the butt
Thank you, I was just thinking about doing this after my golf coach told me all my wedges should be the same length.
Glenn Watson that is a common perception for wedges and can work well. Before those changes are made you might want to consider lie angles and sole grinds
so what kind of blade do you use in the angle grinder thats on a stand?
Clayton Keibler the standard wheel that fits
For a graphite shaft, would a jigsaw work with a grit blade in it?
ruclips.net/video/MoMll66bbhw/видео.html
How to take out the stuck weight inside the hosel iron head? Just drill it sir?
Heat well, I us an awl to spin the weight around then tap the weight out.
Can you use the pipe cutter for the graphite shafts?
I know when I sat this someone will pop up and say yes they did it. However, I dont recommend it. the knife on the cutter IS NOT sharp enough. I have seen some very bad results when others have tried it.
@@McGolf thanks for the quick reply. Maybe a Dremel with a cutoff wheel? I'll mess around with it
@@MrTumorHumorthat is a great alternative and should be pretty quick
Not sure if this is in the comments. When I cut a Graphite shaft I wrap the shaft with a peice of tape
Is it true that if you cut a shaft it changes the shaft stiffness??
Ill have to do a video on that to explain thanks
yes, shortending 1/2" drops swingweight by 3 pts and stiffens the shaft
But is is sunday...
Get on with it!!!!!!!!
So im not supposed to use a hacksaw?
Whoops...
You’ll mess up the weight and balance it won’t work 😬🤦🏽♂️
Jack Cobbold what won’t work
The balance of the club before you cut it is perfect but when you cut it the weight which is in the shaft is messed up which means the balance of the club will be wrong
Very good ... minus 1-pt for not recommending safety glasses 🤣
11:35 OMG. You damaged the shaft.
yep as i explained a second or later
Ricky Fowler
A 14 minute video on how to cut a golf club down lmao come on man
This is the most long winded video everrrrr.
Too much gabbing!
14 minutes to be shown, how not to cut golf shafts...
Your awesome! Thanks for the help.
