I wonder what they hare gonna learn by staring at dirt? Says Splat the geologist.
Geologists have all the dirt on dirt.
It's a solo dev. I've been following the devlogs of this game for the past 4 years! so excited to see it coming out!
same, his devlog is great. been watching for quite a while.
@@jasonsharp4950 Eyo me too!
Same. I actually thought it was another devlog for a second until I saw it was a splattercat video.
@@moonlitegram honestly I didn't notice it either for a good 6 hours uncleared in my notifications because I know sometimes they can be a bit longer but I wanted to watch it. Then it was Splatty
Yup me too! I’m pretty excited for the release. Thanks for covering splat!
*Sits and holds twig in both hands staring intensely at it*
What is......stick?
"Heya Uhglug, you find out what that thing is yet?"
No....but I am close....
🤣
I love that gameplay is taking precedent over graphics! We can make VERY pretty games, but we need the little guys to break the mold for the rest of the industry to prosper too.
Totally agree
@bloodrunslear I disagree, we need both
@@Redridge07 I think that’s what I said…
@@bloodrunsclear please re-read you comment
@@Redridge07 I said we can make pretty games but we also need games that don't focus on graphics...
This game has a lot of merits. There's lot of efforts already in place to offer an original and ingenuous experience of colony management, I like that.
The game isn’t even made by a team… one guy! He is very talented!
This looks like it's going to be a big hit game. It's the way they do things in the game, it's the same as every other game of it's type but somehow so different. One of those that you sit down to and your day disappears.
Need more neolithic (jesus christ guys I fixed it) and bronze age games. Those periods are drastically under explored. Splat is the king of indie reviews!
Splat and Retromation and Nookrium are my favorites.
@@NeZversSounds Yeah, the top three cavehumanoids.
I like the games that play around with that idea too. Pretty sure I know what you're referring to by monolithic. But, did you maybe mean to type Mesolithic? A monolith is a structural term. Think like a single, big standing stone. Mono means one, like in monorail. Mesolithic is a period during the age of prehistory, before recorded history. It's the middle part of what is often called the stone age. They erected monoliths... and megaliths during that period. So yeah, it can be confusing, all those ...liths and all.
*Neolithic....unless you mean games about giant stone pillars, then monolithic it is ;)
@@oilslick7010 Yeah I didn't feel like editing my comment after I sent it. But it seems people know what I mean lol
More ancient history games!!! I like the theme and customizable buildings. Looking forward to the full release!!!
I love it's low fi look.
the game engine was made from scratch by an indie dev
🙂 which makes it all the more impressive. it’s because I’m viewing on mobile that the colors/texture isn’t as visible.
Splat has a good sense of humor.
It has a lot of potential. I love the investigation tool. Makes far more sense then generic "research". Thank you for bringing this game to my attention, it's going to be on my watch list
this game was made by one person not a small team.... this game should win the game of the year reward
Haven’t been to this channel in a few years. Amazing to see how many subs you’ve gained man, well deserved. You’ll always be the one that introduced me to games like stranded deep, the forest, subnautica, etc
There used to be an oldie-goldie with the same name, made by some French Dev, somewhere around the 90`s of the previous century.
IMHO It's best feature was the stone tool making mini game - The player had to actually chisel and chip a rock into a form of a tool, it wasn't as easy as it might sound.
At the time it was glorious and I'm still hoping some Dev will pick up the glove and take such an approach with their game.
Baba Yetu (Our Father) is actually the Lord's prayer translated to Swahili, sung by the Soweto Gospel Choir.
To be honest i really like the system for selecting stuff. Yes it takes more clicks but it's just something different. Or it feels that way to me.
Thanks for showing off the game man. I will most definitely add it to my wishlist
It does hearken back a time before "best practices" were a thing for UI and controls without making the control scheme too awkward to use.
Part of the reason why they are doing it is probably to give the game a bit more interactivity since it seems to be a slower pace than a lot of other games in the genre.
it seems like it's designed with controllers in mind
@@lucidnonsense942 there will be controller and vr support. Don't know how vr will work tho
A small team development game where they animated the workers to show if they are carrying more than 1 piece of wood? Those kind of small details get this game added to my wishlist
OOOHHH. Sparkly eyes! This is shiny! I must know more.
I've always enjoyed sim type games like this. Along with a randomness in getting resources and other items. This seems neat. On the wishlist, and maybe a buy soon enough if I like what I see after digging into it more.
Been following this game since the first devblog. Will be interesting to see you try it.
The Mighty STICK! Do NOT cut it in half and put a string between them.
I sense the presesnce of a fellow Shad-fan hehe
@@TresTrefusis There are dozens of us. DOZENS!
Man I've been following this games dev logs for years. Caught me off-guard that it's that far now!
I kinda like the little jerky animations. the style lends itself to it. great showcase, my dude. 😃
Heya SC o/
Thank you for all the hard work you put in to your videos. I have found some really fun games that I wouldn't have otherwise. Keep up the great work :D
SCG - he has "Gaming" too ;-)
@@igorthelight Sorry SCG, don't send the alpacas after me lol
Baba yetu, yetu uliye
Mbinguni yetu, yetu, amina
Baba yetu, yetu, uliye
Jina lako litukuzwe...
Nothing could make me want to advance as a species more than that freakin' song.
1:17 to skip Splatt intro.
4:05 to skip game into.
That's it today really. Enjoy all.
Baba Yetu was one of the best songs in video gaming history hands down.
been following the dev of this game for a while
MAJIC DAVE IF YOU'RE READING THIS IM SO PROUD OF YOU ❤️
Thanks mate, seeing this put a huge smile on my face!
@@majicDave I had no idea that your game was available to demo on Steam. I haven't really been on RUclips enough, though, tbh, but I certainly have your game on my wishlist.
SplatterCat: Oh no! What killed the alpaca?
(Later on)
Frank Lucas: THATS 25 THOUSAND DOLLAR ALPACA!!! YOU BLOT THAT 💩!!!
Lot of potential here. It still looks super rough but with time it could be really great
I love this game and would really enjoy seeing more
Splat's Condensed Review: 28:15 // Rock: 23:28
Sapiens is originaly a game deved by Loriciel in 1986 for the Thompson MO5 and the Amstrad CPC, in 1987 the game was ported for the Atari ST and DOS. it was later emade in 1996 for Win95 and MAC. yet another remake was made around 2005. it was a survival/adventure game in which you incarnated Torgan, a homo sapiens given the mission to bring food for his tribe. you had to explore a vast land in 3d with also 2d scenes where you had to hunt rabbits, bears, wolf and defend yourself from members of rival tribes. you had to be really carefull about your hunger, thirsts and wounds. you also got to pick up flint stones and craft spears and axes to fight and hunt. you also had to choose your words wisely when meeting another sapiens, some wanting to trade and other wanting your head. the music of the original game is also a reckoned masterpiece of the 8bits computer era.
Looks like a cool game! I'm gonna check this one out for sure. Thanks!
The guy studying the rock looks like Bob Ross.
Yes, happy little investigations
I knew that there was noway you could resist a game called SAPIENS.
This looks dope as heck
ahh yes the days where a naked dude in a field is a potential friend and not a concern
I love the little afros!
Ponder the stick.
Says Splattercatocrates, your learned philosopher sage. Lol, I hope this dev keeps up with this game. It's not bad. Kinda fun looking.
I enjoyed Dawn of Man but does anyone remember the preview for BC, the prehistoric title originally intended for the OG Xbox that was ultimately scrapped, that was a real shame. EDIT I played the Sapiens demo, it was fine but the base game speed needs to be increased (as was the case with Timberborn, initially), the game runs and handles quite well other than that but it was a little basic for my taste and didn't hold my interest, I don't think the art style helped but that's of course subjective.
Yeah, that one hurt.
14:48 Mature pine trees generally look like that with the needles existing in the upper area for prime sunlight
I, for one, can say, as a dummy myself, that a colony of dummies is less than optimal. Thank you. :P
Ride the pollos! Hah great!
The Llamas are Alpacas lol. I thought they were Llamas too. Also the cool things about games they can be anything you want them to be. So I will call the Brohozen LAMO
I, for one, can say that I saw the undulatory grass in RUclips mentioned early in the video. Thank you. :P
The rubber band thing is a needed update, and at least some charisma animation, even if they just move their hands about, politician style. Otherwise, I love it. It reminds me a little of Virtual Villagers back in the day, but no tiny static map, and a far better research method.
I would like to know if (as you can find pinecones) trees are plantable, and if the ecology needs to be balanced. If there's food, just not enough, I could see a few mammoths dropping.
Games like this have a remarkable amount of potential. Even when the game is finished, there's always space to add just a few new resources, and ways to use them. I'd never take on a project like this because I'd finish the game, put it out into the world... then spend the rest of my natural life adding tweaks... There's no such thing as a finished game, and that applies even more to one like this.
If you're roughing it out in the wild, and make a hay bed... don't put it next to the fire pit... I hope there's some claymaking at some point, or these thatch builds aren't long for this world. rofl
Pretty good for a first look.
I like the map generation
idea add a game mode where you play as 1 of the colonist
5:28 I know we all love to hate on RUclipss lossy compression, but they're actually on the bleeding-edge of compression technology. When you're getting 720,000 hours of new video uploaded PER DAY, your compression algorithm is going to have to make some sacrifices.
I like what i see! Would you make it a stream series in the near future?
I feel targeted. Yeah you and me both man you and me both.
Great video as always always enjoyable.
The reason for the radial clicks is probably so it is viable for controller input.
as soon as u said it I started singing it...
You can also just look at a grass tile and press 1 instead of clicking a grass tile and then clicking hay
It is cannon that humans extincted the mammoths. Humans, proto-humans specifically, were very good at extincting megafauna.
I have no idea why I said cannon when it's literally existing history.
"You smell like cotija" is pretty brutal, honestly.
Lol I'd run away too if the person trying to recruit me acted like that
Nope, not the ability to rock. The ability to tree.
The ability to rock comes later... ;)
House building seem to hit a pet peeve of mine. Where it doesn't follow terraine, and doesn't make a stileted floor if on a slight slope, making the house float on air. Minor thing, but it just looks so janky.
The game you were thinking of was: ancestors the humankind odyssey
Man, that control scheme looks like its designed for controllers. Game looks like it could end up being something special but I might struggle getting past the controls.
The selection is a bit weird because the dev is planning to release the game for VR. I remember he mentioned it in one of his devlogs.
this game made is by literally one person and his wife and kids helped with sound like speak sapiens do
Reminds me of BC.. a game that never came out would have been on Xbox
Cool!
Thumbs up!
They should make the trees look realistic
aaaw... I'm feeling a bit sorry for our prehistoric Splat feeling victimised ='(
might try this, looks decent!
Dawn of Man would have so much potential to develop further.
Add other tribes (preferably to the same map, or if you can't, to neighboring areas then) to compete with. That would add so much depth.
Enable building more than one village center, so that you could build another village further away. Now if you do it, people will walk between the two villages constantly and get nothing done, except dying: does not work.
That reference he made makes me wonder if Splattercat is an Ohioan
Amber waves of grain
can you do a top 10, 20, 100 or whatever list of your fav. roguelike / indigames ? rly interesstet in it
🖤
I wonder if that controls are built in for a phone game?
Llamas are my fave too but ALAS! those are alpacas 😔
Why are the storage and crafting areas square in a hex grid world? I like the game so far, too bad it gives me motion sickness.
22:33 - 22:42 That's what she said
24:50 - I got the joke, don't worry
It would be epic if this guys name is Bill.
What happened to that other Caveman game that we never got past walls?
I'm interested!
I started playing the demo and not landing next to apple trees was a mistake.
Dude if you havent you should try Ostriv
I always thought that there wasn't really a lot to actually *do* in Dawn of Man.
Sorry to hear about your alpaca 🫡
Ewwww, sweaty ankles?!?!
I guess the dev didn't want a UI with buttons. Hence the click click click way of doing that.
This demo does not start on me 😔 any idea why ? I press play on steam. It stays like that for a few seconds and then green play button appears again.
Your commentary is hilarious. How did you unlock Questlove @12:45? :D
12 Sapiens by the end of day 1 =D (and 2 were pregnant!)
Hello! I really enjoy watching your game reviews! Thank you very much. I noticed that the game requires a broadband network connection, is it always online or is that just for download/install? I have DSL and do not play online. Thank you in advance to anyone who can tell me! :)
please play similar games on stream
the great POLLO!, some chicken rice sounds good, investigate that.
cavemen performing Husserl's phenomenological reduction on rock's. Like it so far, just needs better character models/animations. Like the basic ideas.
Wololo
I totally agree- games should NEVER try to reinvent the wheel- i.e design some unique control / UI interface / keys, unlike any other game when we already have perfectly functional ones that are almost always better and we all know how to use. This isnt the wild days of video games any more like 30+ yr ago where nearly every game had some weird unique awkward set of key bindings you had to learn.
i mean, its a radial menu, hardly reinventing the wheel
It's not reinventing the wheel, it's just a fresh take on a pre-existing feature. If designers didn't stray from already successful things in life, nothing would ever evolve or improve.
@@BlakOutDevelopment Yes but theres a reason we say dont reinvent the wheel- there is tons they can change and innovate without messing up basic core aspects that there is no reason to mess with - just implementing a much worse system just to be different is dumb. The only time to change up the default control scheme for such a game or UI is of you can do better for your game. This system is clearly far more clunky and unintuitative and slower.
14:50 That looks like a Scotch Pine to me.
