I think what Rick is trying to say is- always be open that you might not have all the answers, be humbled by the process, be open to whatever will work to solve your music/ idea/ problem
Rubin explaining how he doesn't consider himself an expert is the opposite of the Dunning Kruger effect. He is just explaining how he is not a musician or an engineer (in spite of having an ear and methods for helping artists shape their songs and sound). One of the keys to living a more creative life that this video clip cut short is; to never be convinced you really know something completely. Never be your own authority of the subjects you pursue. Try to maintain the beginners mindset.
He doesn't though. Unlike nearly any other producer, he's not an engineer. He doesn't play an instrument, he doesn't even touch the recording console. He's simply an advisor who's there and helps get the best out of the artist by having simple conversations like the one here.
@@kurtoppenheim4552 he doesn’t play an instrument… as he plays the melody on the keyboard and beats the drums out on the mpc or native machine lol I think there’s not a lot of difference between that or piano or live drums
Crazy how humility goes a long way. Combine it with always having an open mind and applying it to your own knowledge and you’ve created infinite possibilities of creativity
This just made me happy. To know that nobody is perfect yet everyone is perfect because we are all the same. Nobody has the answers for you. You have the answers for yourself! No matter how much value we tend to put on ones opinions it’s still the same as our own, same face value & the same worth. Don’t judge people for their beliefs because they just have a different way of looking at the world than you do. I never understood this throughout my life I always thought it was one way of looking at life and that was that. 😂
Not to sound pretentious- but it’s an idea you get or you don’t. If you think he’s just leading you on or doesn’t know, it’s because you don’t have that willingness to accept it in yourself. Rick proves time and time again that a willingness for reinvention or a willingness to follow the idea or belief or even the person with the vision is more important than your own feelings. Because the creative ‘oneness’ he describes is a Buddhist dharma. The philosophy of all things equal this one thing, that we ourselves are the author and finisher. If you can’t understand the willing creative adaptation to problems and beliefs then you probably just won’t, but there’s nothing wrong with that. A lot of people hate vague ideas, but for me he’s taught me that I’m not insane for having those same feelings and wanting the same result out of the work. salamun alaykum ya’ll

I also think he's talking about a community of like minded people when he said, "We are creators". In a sense leaning into a creative community of people as well.

I agree with him but what about rhythm? Timing? Chord progressions? All the little things that music usually needs to be listenable. If I just follow my heart I’ll end up making something that sounds unlistenable. There are some unspoken rules to making good music right?
When you have no skill you have taste. Your taste is what makes you a good creative. Gaining skill and knowing the technical side of music allows you to express that taste more authentically and closer to what you hear in your head. Even though Rubin doesn’t actually have the technical skills he is really good at getting artists(the ones who do have the skills) to authentically get as close as they can to their true vision. He is a master curator of taste.
He's talking about higher level stuff.. Once you have the basics down.. What's left is simply trying to do it as well as you can according to your own interpretation and taste. In other words trust your own sense and judgement and do your best. That's what I got
