"Father, into your hands I commend my spirit" is a phrase from the Bible though, so I highly doubt Serj just took a "random book" and accidently stumbled on the Bible haha
It really is great. Too much music today is overproduced. The guys in SOAD are really talented and the producers/engineers didn’t ruin it by quantizing and pitch correcting everything. Sounds good because it’s real. :)
@@cal-king I've seen tool five times, I've seen a perfect circle four times. I've seen hundreds of shows from many different types of bands Tool is by far my favorite

More human than human 3. Bodies with the og Drowning Pool lineup and 4. Ozzy doing Mama I’m Coming Home right after Sharon’s cancer diagnosis. An epic night.
John Dolmayan! He's fantastic, such a great distinct sound. Back, I wanna say some time in the early 2000s he played with the USC Trojan Marching Band, they had an arrangement of SOAD songs and he played on the field with them. I'm not sure if it was just once but I remember it from when I was younger.
@@aaronvanzile3824 I remember seeing a photo of him on stage with his back to the camera and he had this huge floor Tom to the left of his hats. I always thought that was bad ass. Young Jamie is underrated. Already had the section of the song ready for Rick Ruben to playback and exemplify his point. Always ahead. Joe knew exactly what he was doing when getting Young Jamie as the backend of the show.
I remember meeting System of a Down in Baton Rouge in the late 90's. I was talking to their bass player Shavo Odadjian, asking why on Earth was he was playing a hollow body Linc Luthier bass on stage. He told me he really liked them, but I told him the sound and look were completely wrong for his music. I suggested he try a Gibson Thunderbird instead. He was lukewarm to the idea at the time but was cordial and said he'd consider it. Shavo is a very nice guy and we talked for a some time about the band, thier music, and bass playing in general. I even recall Serj Tankian looking over at us wondering what we were so intently chatting about. A few years passed and I was watching MTV when Chop Suey came on. Sure enough, I immediately recognized the band and noticed that Shavo had ditched his old bass for a Gibson Thunderbird!! I believe Gibson even sponsors him now. I would love to hear from him and find out if he remembered our conversation, but they are so huge it probably has no chance of happening. Anyway, even at the point when I met them, you could tell they had something special and were destined to make it big. Glad to see they did.
Random lyrics are amazing because it's like a proverbial shotgun blast of emotions that several billion people can interpret for themselves. In short, it'll mean something to someone somewhere eventually...
I think we should take this discourse with a grain of salt. He (Rubin) knows exactly word for word what the lyrics are in the bridge, but pretended to not know, pause and push it to Jamie. Secondly it is not random. The lyrics fit with the rest of the lyrics in the song. The chorus contains "self-righteous suicide" referring to the crucifixion and bridge lyrics are words spoken by Christ. Lets not be so gullible guys.
You're confusing "random" for "serendipitous." Serj talking about Green Eggs and Ham during the bridge would be random. Serj talking about the heavenly Father after singing about angels for the entire song is serendipity.
This actually quite accurate, if you believe in the spirit world, black magic, Hollywood etc. Nothing that comes from there, music, television, movies are by accident. It's all programing. Lots of video on here with musicians openly admitting to selling their souls, actors/actress and other musicians admitting to being posseted by "something" while filming a movie or writing a song or on stage.
@@Hughesburner It's really fun how they and we ourselves try to make us believe in fairy tales such as "selling your soul for success" when the real problem is is precisely making us believe what they want, manipulating us through media, and we can barely do anything about it.

There's always been something about that track that just hits different. Especially the bridge section they were speaking of. It's fucking tragic and beautiful, and damn near puts tears in your eyes when you hear it. Joe was feeling it too, almost left him speechless lol
That whole album is good. I listened to that thing through more times than i could ever hope to count. I think im about to right now. It really is a masterpiece.
Dude Toxicity is one of the best metal albums of all time. Chop Suey even though it was mainstream is one of my favorites. The outro is amazing. So many good songs on that album. I know bands have to change their sound over time to create something different but I felt Hypnotize and Mesmerize weren’t as good. If you wanna listen to this song slowed its so good.
Toxicity and steal this album were a bit more raw and "out there" whereas hypnotize/mesmerize were a bit more smooth. Love em all. Shame they split. I also love Daron's scars on Broadway . Personally I find serj' solo stuff more boring and unrefined
@@Dieterbe ...They didn't split up. They still tour together in Europe, and are all still friends. Serj has said they don't make new music together because Daron and Serj just aren't on the same page, creatively.
LOL, i was thinking the exact same thing. I'm over here with the foot tap going and head nodding too along with Rick, freaking Joe just still. Dammit man, feel the music lol!
I remember going to a day to remember concert and chop suey played on the PA while the techs were setting up. The whole crowd sang this part of the song and that moment was more memorable than the actual concert
One of the best songs ever I think and I don't even listen to that Era of music much anymore because I've tried to listen to all the stuff that came before my high school years. But that song will always stick out. So intense but also beautiful. The moment of silence they both share at the end here was incredible.
I know exactly what Rick is talking about. I feel sorry for Joe or anyone else who doesn’t understand/appreciate the musical dynamics here. I am just learning that the lyrical content is random, but that only adds to the magic. It’s Serj’s use of emotion and melody that drove this home to me since the moment I heard it at the tender age of 15. The “forsaken me” part always pulled at my heartstrings. And it leads so beautifully into the final chorus with the harmony from Daron. Just…masterful.
Me too. Serj's voice crack when he sings the word "heart", that always got me a bit. And of course the harmonies at the end hit you out of nowhere and cap off the song perfectly.
I feel sorry for the you for looking down on ppl that might Misunderstand this bc they like the song and that’s literally all that matters . Looking down on u tho ik I’ll sacrifice myself to just say it
We all loved so much these songs and when it happens to hear that Rick Rubin is behind all of them all you can say it's...Damn, this man is indeed a genius.
That is absolutely wild that the most iconic part of Chop Suey was written because Serj picked a Bible off of Rubin’s bookshelf and randomly opened it to the account of Jesus’ crucifixion.
System of a Down has perfect delivery they are so in sync with each other it’s amazing. That part of the song is so damn good it will never get old. Hope they can make 1 last tatesful classic Double disc album
Fun fact: the song was originally supposed to be titled "suicide" but the band was asked to "chop" the title by the record label for something more appropriate. So they utilmately decided to play on that and called the song "Chop Suey".
Crazy. Serj randomly landed on maybe the most emotional part of the Gospel to use as the bridge of this song. Added to the rest of it, it makes the whole thing almost psychedelic. Yeah.. this guy knows what he's doing.
@@itsshaz4311 Well, the bridge of this song is loaded with meaning for obvious reasons. This song (and this band's work) is just good art. Viewed through the lens of my life experiences I get a flood of meaning and perceptions when I listen to it. A powerful hallucinogen has the same effect.
@@itsshaz4311 It's literally what Christ said on the cross right before he died. This was "randomly taken from a book". It's the moment that proves God allowed Christ to make his ultimate sacrifice without help so that Christ"s triumph could be his - much like a parent will allow a child to do something on their own to fully enjoy the sense of accomplishment. In His weakest moment, Christ couldn't see the reason behind God the Father's methods but still trusted in his plan "father, into thy hands I commend my spirit" was his final act of "faith" in and submission to a bigger purpose. He could have called on angels to deliver him but he gave his life so he could triumph over death in front of the whole world. His resurrection gives the hope necessary for our own triumph over what can seem like a hopeless moment(s) of suffering. It says that "no matter how bad this can get, it ends in triumph over this earthly realm; there is something beyond this that is greater". A bigger purpose that "if we trust in the all powerful love of a cosmic parent, we will be ok. We'll always be able to go back home - where love abounds." All that found it's way into the song "Chop Suey" by accident.
@@realitywave He wasn't in "heavan" the whole time (according to the scriptures) but also in hell to bring spirits out of "endless" torment. Call it what you will but millions and millions of people find "salvation" in the philosophy of Christianity and hope it offers. I've found spiritual power in the deepness of the gospel (etymology: good news) and compared to all other theories or philosophies you can't say it's anymore of a fairytale then anything you believe in. Believe what you want but I find hope in an all powerful, all loving creator that sent us into earthly "simulation" to gain cosmic/spiritual power and who's only goal for us is to enjoy life as he does.
I got goosebumps seeing how he was rocking it so hard back and forth while listening to it even tho he probably heard this tune countless times before. Long live the great musical minds.

All SOAD guys are Armenian and it's really cool when you can hear the traditional Armenian influences. Occasionally I hear it in Daron's playing for example the song Hypnotize has a beautiful traditional section

Maybe he also got the location mixed up because again, why would he even have a Bible in his library. It was probably at Serj's house or a studio office.
@@EdwinLopez-hf3uw he's fukken rick rubin, he dont have to make up fake stories to blow peoples minds lmao
@EdwinLopez-hf3uw
Wrong.
I've read an interview with him where the reporter describes his library....
"He seems to be one with the room, which is lined in floor-to-ceiling books, most of which are of a spiritual nature, whether about Buddhism, the Bible or New Age quests for enlightenment. The library and the house are filled with religious iconography mixed with mementos from the world of pop."
Look how much he LOVES this song. You can tell it's just part of who he is to love the music he helps create, which is why so many songs he is apart of are so lasting.
LOVES it so much he doesn't remember the name of the song or the name of the singer or the right lyrics.....

@@brynlpz83 Rubin is highlighting this one part of a bigger whole. He’s not “bragging”. It’s about incorporating a tiny piece from somewhere else into the song. What they did was no different from taking a fragment off the ground and putting in a mosiac. It’s not a copy of the entire thing. There’s nothing wrong with this (small) part of the process. All of your favorite artists have done this to some degree.

Such a powerful song. You can really feel the strong energy from it. Most songs don't do that to me.
One of the greatest songs ever, so powerful
It really is great. Too much music today is overproduced. The guys in SOAD are really talented and the producers/engineers didn’t ruin it by quantizing and pitch correcting everything. Sounds good because it’s real. :)

It’s amazing that one man has shaped some of the biggest and best bands and artists of the last 40 years
Saw System at Ozzfest in 2002. They were absolutely great at what was my all time favorite musical event. Legendary lineup. 4 songs brought the entire amphitheater alive 1. Chop Suey 2.

John is the glue that holds it all together. Massively underrated
Young Jamie is underrated. Already had the section of the song ready for Rick Ruben to playback and exemplify his point. Always ahead. Joe knew exactly what he was doing when getting Young Jamie as the backend of the show.

I get goosebumps every time I hear that part of the song too. The harmony and emotion runs deep.

Rick ruben is responsible for SO many incredible hits and risks taken by artists. A true legend
So glad they listened to it all the way through. Right after the part they talked about has one of the best harmonization ever!
Random lyrics are amazing because it's like a proverbial shotgun blast of emotions that several billion people can interpret for themselves. In short, it'll mean something to someone somewhere eventually...
That's the same for all lyrics/songs, though, as well.
Nice way of putting it
I think we should take this discourse with a grain of salt.
Not really. It's random, there's no meaning. Literally picked form a random page of a random book. So not even the artist put effort in them.
You're confusing "random" for "serendipitous."
Serj talking about Green Eggs and Ham during the bridge would be random.
Serj talking about the heavenly Father after singing about angels for the entire song is serendipity.
I’m convinced that Rick Rubin is a wizard who’s in the business of conjuring up magical moments and capturing them on tape.
Actually, I truly believe he's satan.
@@Hughesburner It's really fun how they and we ourselves try to make us believe in fairy tales such as "selling your soul for success" when the real problem is is precisely making us believe what they want, manipulating us through media, and we can barely do anything about it.

RR is one on a short list of legitimate musical geniuses. To both produce some of the greatest rap albums of all time, while also seeing the broader mainstream appeal of SOAD (what anyone else would have seen as a non-traditional niche band) is impressive as hell.
