I never thought of Floyd as “Prog”... just Pink Floyd... their own genre

Completely agree, Jeff Diefenbach. I personally believe there are elements of prog throughout Pink Floyd's works from their beginnings through to The Wall. Some songs have more elements than others. But either way, I think Pink Floyd are unto themselves and can't really be put into any category cleanly and succinctly-other than being musical geniuses who created masterpiece after masterpiece. I understand the interest in discussing PF and I'm all for it, I just don't think they can be labeled with any one category.

    • @nectarinedreams7208

The fact they can be considered their own genre is proof they're prog. Prog isn't a genre, it's a mindset and approach, and Pink Floyd are a part of that.

For me "Shine on you crazy diamond" is the song that I choose every time when answering the question "Choose a song which you'll take on a desert island".
Any song from The Wall can't be listened apart from others, I think, you need to listen to full album to understand and feel "Comfortably Numb" fully.
I even have Dark Side vinyl (but have no vinyl player yet, lol). One of the greatest.

Comfortably Numb isn't a very progressive song, it's a fairly conventional (though beautiful) rock ballad. I think you're probably the first commentator who I've heard say that, and I agree.
The Wall is a prog album, though. And that's a key point.
I don't think you can listen to just one song from The Wall and get a full appreciation of it. The Wall was conceived as a single continuous piece of music and the songs should be heard in that context, not just because of giving the lyrics more meaning but in also terms of appreciating recurring musical themes etc. It's like listening to just Ode to Joy. Yes, it's a nice song in itself, but you're missing so much if you're not hearing it in the context of the entire 9th symphony. (Having said that, Pink Floyd commonly played Comfortably Numb stand-alone in concert, so maybe they disagree. But they're playing to an audience who already know the context.)

The problem with lifting a song from the album, is that it loses its identity, its context within the story. The Wall is a story told over a big double album which needs to be heard as a whole. It is like listening to one verse of a normal song and thinking you understand the song from that. It is certainly progressive, but within the context of the story as a whole. The live version of this is much longer with the guitar solo carrying on for 5 or 6 minutes... often cited as the greatest guitar solo of all time. 1966 Pink Floyd was highly experimental, psychadelic and proggy, this song is from an album that was narrative driven, as part of a rock opera called The Wall created in 1979. The experimentation was over, they figured it out, lol.

I just stumbled on your channel and I like what you are doing so far. As others have said this song in itself is not a very prog song. But at this point in Pink Floyd's discography they were doing concept albums. The Wall, Wish You Were Here, Animals, and Dark Side of the Moon are all albums to be heard in full. Each one is based around a full story or theme/themes. I will say that you did hit on their contribution to the genre. They have always been about atmosphere. I would even go so far as to say that they and bands like The Moody Blues are kind of forebears of the Prog genre The band goes back to the late 60's and started during England's psychedelic era and because of that, they always were able to build very lush productions. Someone suggested echoes, which is a great way to get where they are coming from. And if you want a really good track Great Gig in the Sky (off of Dark Side) is just amazingly emotional. As far as other bands in prog I'm not sure if you got tEmerson, Lake and Palmer, but they were a huge prog band. Good luck, and enjoy

If you are looking for some of the elements of 70s prog rock that continue into today's progressive rock you've made some less than optimal choices.
For Genesis, Supper's ready is one of their best loved works, but its a fairly early work from before some elements of their full on progressive writing had developed. You will find more elements of prog rock on display in something like Firth of Fifth from the following album. In particular, the steadily progressive changes of mood to tell a story - Supper's Ready is like a suite of several songs, played without a break. Try Dance on a Volcano from the mid 70s if you want to see all the elements you were expecting on full display.
For Jethro Tull, Thick as a Brick was more a display of humour than anything else. You might find the carefully constructed songs of the Aqualung album display more of what you were expecting to find in prog rock.
For Yes, Close to the Edge is a pretty reasonable choice to see what their progressive side was about.
Comfortably Numb is another "one of their best loved works" choices, but its not really progressive at all. The concept albums are where they displayed their progressive and experimental elements to the full. Don't worry about the length of an album. Most are split into many songs of modest length, and each of them can be tried on its own.

I understand where you are coming from. Pink Floyd were a psychedelic band, turned “space rock” band, turned Mega huge and quite awesome arena show band. They didn’t really do anything particularly complex in terms of time signatures, but did produce one of the most popular rock songs of all time in 7/4 (money). What they really were were a group that knew how to write music you want to sit in a dark room with headphones on and lose yourself in. If you haven’t listened to this band much before, then you need to listen to Dark side of the Moon in its entirety. And then the next three albums the same way. Maybe not as reactions, but just for yourself. Genius stuff. Not complicated, just awesome songs with great lyrics and a lot of space between instruments and parts. And of course David Gilmour who is one of the best Guitarists of all time, even though he couldn’t play fast. Didn’t need to.

Back in the early 70s I started to buy the albums of Progressive rock bands, such as King Crimson, Genesis, Yes, Pink Floyd etc. I also went to see them in concert. So did my friends. No one really used the term Prog Rock at that time, it was always Progressive rock (there was a certain pretentiousness to it) , and progressive rock bands usually produced concept albums, which was pretty much how progressive rock bands were defined at the time by the music buying public (The musical press like the NME hated it). Many rock bands were experimenting at the time, such as Zep, so that was not really a defining factor that I heard people use. Organs certainly, but not exclusively.
The only music definitions that are relevant are those used at the time by the music fans. This is a song by a progressive rock band from a concept album and is therefore a progressive song. That is how it was defined at the time. All the later definitions and musical compartmentalisations are BS and are intended to imbue the speaker with the appearance of musical knowledge. Progressive rock could be pretentious in the 70s, but it was never anything like the pretentious crap you hear these days about music. Modern 'definitions' are irrelevant.

thanks for the honesty in almost-instantly letting us know you recognized the song before.(even though after the song you clarified that you dont remember it all, the way you approached that reasoning on-the-spot i think is good insight into your reasoning in general. i agree with your opinion about them being prog. i had never heard anybody call them prog before and was surprised when i heard that because i had never considered that before
edit: in a sense, the 'emotive' rockish ballads seem to be this thing that transcends genres. no matter what type of music you enjoy, you will have a hard time finding someone who doesnt enjoy alot of these songs. like this and many other greats. usually thats a sign of too much of a general tilt to want to apply to the biggest audience possible. but it seems with some of these emotive rock ballads that, that rule doesnt apply. (well as frequently as i see with other styles of music) it seems to capture the raw emotion to hit an audience that anybody can appreciate, but isint too generic\bland to where it just sits unnoticed in a river of similar sounding music. i guess, in a sense, its technical enough to appeal to musicians while also being 'easy listening' enough so almost anyone can follow along and likely find something they enjoy.
sorry for the rant and id be welcome to hear if anyone has any more insight or alternate perspectives on these ideas
    - tldr (for the song related stuff) - i believe there is a balance between 'technical' and 'emotive' writing where it seems that the higher the skill\barrier-to-entry, the harder it is to portray emotion. i understand thats a pretty general statement with alot of exceptions and varies depending on a massive amount of factors and each instrument being wildly different in that matter. but, some stuff just seems to 'land' better then other stuff, no matter how unexplainable and unpredictable it may be. im inclined to tilt towards an emotive\soul angle as the main cause

The Wall was released in 1979. Prog had already become a dirty word as the prog bands had been labelled as pretentious dinosaurs. Punk rock, disco, etc. were in fashion. So the prog bands tended to simply their music. Surprisingly Pink Floyd released this double concept album in this context. Althoug it was very risky, they entered the charts. Imho "Comfortably numb" is prog adapted to the new situation: it is pop-rock if we only look at it as a song; but it comes from a concept album, so I think of it more as a "movement" or "passage" of a longer musical piece. Also it is true that we could find pop songs in very important prog albums of the late 60s and early 70s (e.g. "I know what I like", the single from the "Selling England by the pound" album by Genesis, released in 1973 -Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett era-).
I'm glad that now "prog" is not a dirty word anymore (perhaps since "OK computer" by Radiohead was labelled as "progressive"). It was sad to see such experimental bands being despised. Fortunately they're now vindicated. I think that we are very lucky to have so many different musical genres and styles to choose from; there's music for every moment and situation, and if we are clever enough we can enjoy all of them.
Thank you for your interesting reveiews. Stay safe!

This came out in 79 and the band was in its most conceptual songwriting period thanks to bassist/singer Roger Waters who was doing the majority of writing. This song was a monster radio hit. The albums The Wall, The Final Cut and even Waters first solo album The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking, which was first offered to Floyd, were heavy on shorter songs that flowed one into the next and built around a theme.Their prog period would have been 68 to 77, containing probably the greatest of prog albums Meddle, Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here and Animals. All prog masterpieces.
Floyd were the masters of musical soundscapes.Outside of David Gilmour on guitar, they were very good but not monster musicians. This allowed/forced them to create music that relied on brilliant arrangements full of musical layers. Saxophones. Female vocals. Musique concrete. This is what made them the most different sounding prog band of that era.

Early Floyd were a highly experimental psychedelic band, very influential in Krautrock music and some songs can still sound quite off-putting today. When Syd Barrett left they smoothed out the edges a ton and became a really refined artsy rock group. Their experimentation was mostly with album format and detailed studio production, they were never interested in pushing music on a technical / performance level. They were a blues band at their core in many ways.
The proggiest they ever got was probably with Wish You Were Here and Animals since those have epic-length songs. However they're still a far cry from stuff like Yes or King Crimson. Animals is fantastic and any of the three 10+ minute tracks would be a great listen.

This song in particular isn't very proggy, but it is on a double-disc concept album that was made into one of the trippiest movies ever. Pink Floyd were so OG they started as a psychedelic band, the genre that prog grew out of. Of all the classic prog bands I'd say they evolved the most from their origins. They were also the band that probably drifted the farthest away from classic/traditional notions of both rock and prog. They're practically their own genre. One way to think about them is as a very, very early precursor to what would become post-rock, especially given their emphasis on atmosphere/mood. They also somehow achieved massive popularity with the Dark Side of the Moon album, this track, and Another Brick in the Wall pt. 2. It's almost a rite of passage to get high and put on Dark Side of the Moon (perhaps synced up with The Wizard of Oz) or the film-version of The Wall. They were never instrumentally or compositionally virtuosic in the way Crimson, Yes, or Rush were.
FWIW, this is one of my all-time favorite songs. The guitar solo in this (both of them, but especially the second) never fails to give me chills, and in the right mood it can easily make me cry. David Gilmour had an uncanny ability to ring so much emotion out of just a few notes, or the right bend at the right place. Plus his tone is so pristine and damn near inimitable. I think what you're describing emotionally is a kind of depressive apathy. This album/song is very much about the depression and disillusionment that comes with becoming a star and feeling disconnected from the audience and other people, hence the metaphorical "wall" that the character puts up between himself and others. Personally, I'm more mixed on PF than the other classic prog bands; I love some of their stuff and don't care for others, but when they hit they tend to hit hard.

What I think you would have found more informative would have been if you went right back to their beginnings and listen to "Astronomy Domine" or "Interstellar Overdrive" from "Piper at the Gates of Dawn". These tracks when I first heard them on a newly released album so long ago defined a new and fascinating direction in music for me.

Keep in mind the era when this came out. There was really nothing like this album that made it with any great success. It was unheard of back then to make an album such as this and expect significant success in the main stream field of Rock at that time. This is one reason some consider it progressive.
    Good reaction.

Also, definitely check out the albums Animals, Whish You Were Here, & Dark Side of the Moon. Great albums, but listen to them in their entirety please, it is the only way to truly appreciate them in my opinion.

The second solo is just orgasmic lol. It is so creative how many different subdivisions of picking he does. Slow sustained notes, faster moments of shred and it all meshes together so well without feeling like its jerking between the two. You should definitely listen to the full album in your own time if you have to so you can enjoy this in its full context while first impressions are still fresh. The album has so many smooth style shifts just like modern prog it really was ahead of its time. Also the live version is a must.

I've always felt the same way about Pink Floyd. Their best work is pretty orthodox stuff, harmonically and rhythmically, without any really virtuosic playing. When I try to analyze it, it's hard for me to put my finger on why those albums sound so grand--what elevates Pink Floyd above most other bands. I guess it boils down to good songwriting and the fact that the players all had really good judgement. (Those albums were also recorded extremely well, especially when compared to most other recordings of the day). The Gilmour guitar solo is emblematic of that quality. It's simple and unambitious, but with each note he delivers exactly what's needed.

You have to remember that Comfortably Numb as part of a "prog rock musical". By the time this song comes along on the album, we already know this character's back story and why he's comfortably numb.. Also, this was the last album that this lineup recorded before Roger Waters left the band. Their early stuff was *way* more prog. Listen to the whole album. Watch the movie, even! :-) Also, if you want rock with orchestrals, listen to the Moody Blues album, "Days of Future Passed", which was the first rock album with an orchestra.

Ditto, Pulse live 94 is the way to appreciate many PF songs. (CN, Sorrow, Brick, Run Like). Then DSOM, Welcome Machine studio is amazing. Consider Gilmors solo Momentary Lapse, Division Bell and Waters Solo Radio Kaos, Pros/Cons of hitch hiking w/ tom scott and eric clapton. are epic on their own. As good as the wall is, some tracks i just fly by in reactions b/c other versions like pulse are so good, I just move on. FInd Pulse - Lights, Prod Quality, Equip tone. Sometimes, it all comes together in one tour event, but I get many want to start with orig studio even though its early to mid 70s. Many epic master pieces like Dire Straights LP #1, #2 Communique my fav. Serious good music. Nothing like money for nothing. Its hard core start, killer voicings and melodies. Like a good BBQ, Low and Slow.

Very interesting and honest reaction. Well put though, it may not be a prog song in its purest sense, but it is mostly definitely one of the defining gateway songs into prog. I’m certain there are hundreds and thousands of people who got into prog through this song, then into Wall, and Pink Floyd (both of which are prog staple), and then to the whole prog universe. Also, this song is also a gateway to a state of mind that prog gets you into, a taste of it for a beginner. Hence for that reason, this song has always been a part (an been an important part) of the prog conversation.

  • @silvertube52

Classic 1970's prog artists are not ground breaking on every song. Sometimes a relatively simple composition is part of a suite or concept album, and taken in the context of the larger work it can be a critical part of the whole. A given song might be included to convey a thought or feeling that is best expressed with a plain or traditional song structure. Nonetheless to me this is prog because of the atmospherics, concept, and great guitar solo. That's enough to put it in the realm of prog.
