00:35 that to me is what is exciting about this, that is the largest ship to ever get to space, made by a guy that had 1 chance left, and people were laughing at him for trying, now who is laughing all the way to MARS, Totally struck in awe at this launch.
I've never seen you so quiet and emotional, don't worry, it was the same here, still gets goosebumps from those shockwaves. This is the start to the next level, and I'm happy I can experience this at my age. I've seen Apollo, the Space shuttle, now Starship.
AND with honestly crappy mics.. I mean, they are great for voice just as they are made for, but you could tell even at this distance they were getting blown out. Wow to hear that in person!!!
I was by La Copa Inn, in the island. I could feel it in my entire body. I'll never forget it. I'm planning to see the next launch as well. Everyone should see a launch at least once. It is truly amazing. It left me speechless.
I miss those sonic booms we used to hear in the 60's. On the farm I could look up and see a contrail moving over head. When it got to about 1:00 high i knew the blast was coming. It made the cows and horses jump. It was part of life in the 60's.
To me it looked like the launch achieved a good 75% of its goals. The launch and main booster separation looked perfect. And that was the main goal of the launch. The second stage lit off and took over. Eventually, something went wrong with that and the mission was terminated deep into the launch cycle. The main booster drifted away from the second stage and then exploded maybe 15 seconds later. Not sure why it exploded but it might have been intentionally destroyed. I don’t think the main booster was suppose to do a controlled landing this time as CNN claimed in an article I read shortly after the launch ended. But I think SpaceX had a pretty launch this morning. And likely learned a lot.
After the main booster separated it was supposed to fly back towards the launch site, then do a controlled splashdown in the water several miles off the coast as a test of its landing capabilities. The second stage if it had survived would have reentered the atmosphere near Hawaii, but it would not have attempted a controlled splashdown it would have just slammed into the water.
People seem to forget that these raptor engines are not like the thrusters that we grew up with on the space shuttle, and other rockets. I mean, they are still in their experimental phase. I think there was damage to the booster, due to the hot staging by the vehicles engines. This is most likely the most important part of their data collection. Figuring out what percentage of power to use on each set of engines, to most efficiently separate the two masses. I wouldnt be surprised to see structural failure near the hot staging ring, in the coming reports. However, the booster did roll... Albeit the roll looked undesirable. Right before the booster explosion, it looked like the booster vented an enormous amount of fuel, and it looked like it may have been upside down. As far as the ship's Flight termination system, .. All I could see was maybe a few pieces of the heat shield fell off. The predetermined (pre programed) flight parameters were set to take the ship "to the brink of orbit, not all the way to orbit - to stress the hull, and the heat shield.". It could have detonated due to the sensors reading too much heat... but honestly thats just a shot in the dark, as I could not see it at termination. All-in-all, I would say Elon and the entire Space-X team has cause to calibrate a lot of success on this flight test. But personally, I really liked the explosion. It was really cool.
Any news on the launch pad. I know they made quite a few changes over the months. I’m wondering if it could take the heat this time around. Let’s hope they can launch another soon
Very concise summation. I've re-watched the launch several times on different channels and I agree. The only thing, IMO, Starship experienced a RUD before SECO. Just an opinion.
@@GB-zi6qr I welcome perspective. As I said, its a 'shot in the dark', if you know the expression. I couldnt see it, but they said it terminated right at, or near their target
People that witnessed a Saturn V launch from the VAB three miles away always talked about the staccato pounding that you could feel in your chest and in the ground. This Starship launch gives people the exact same sensation!
The rocket and flame together are about 1/4 MILE tall! It's remarkable how huge this thing is, the angry astronaut's video puts it into some perspective.
The Saturn V rocket made a similar tilt on launch. A small 1-degree tilt in order to more comfortably clear the tower. I am not 100% certain, but that may have been why the Starship did it.
I was like that for the Total Lunar Eclipse in Illinois in 2017 what a glorious thing to witness and feel a part of. I still hae to go back to Space x, they cancelled twice while I was there.
I got to watch a Falcon Heavy launch last year, and I can say it was incredible. Starship compared to FH has much more violent pops and a more aggressive rumble, but I was watching from Banana Creek, so there might be a distance difference compared to this.
The rocket exhaust is supersonic which means it breaks the sound barrier and causes an explosion sound. Since it's a continuous "explosion" there are thousands of shockwaves coming off the rockets. If you watch the footage of the launch you can see these shockwaves in the smoke around the rocket.
You know what I like about this? The honesty, the confidence, and the vulnerability! It takes a lot of courage to compete with the other channels that have the coverage but what you did, doing it all yourself. That means something to me. Well done. You are my sub and keep doing what you are doing! Melbourne Australia...
Ah yes, nothing ruins a legendary moment like the woo hoo crowd. The rocket can’t hear you cheer and you ruin it for everyone else. Why can’t people just STFU and enjoy the moment?
I watched a Shuttle from Jetty Park launch and when the soundwaves hit me I could feel it in my chest. Can't fathom what those 33 birds sounded like and literally felt like.

Good sound quality. It sounds like the air itself is on fire.
i mean u are hearing exhaust sonic booms from liquid oxygen so technically yes
Wow. That sound was crazy! Sounded like continuous fireworks or something!
It’s continuous very large controlled explosions. You can see the shockwaves rolling through the clouds of smoke and dust on most launches.

How is the OLM holding up? did the new Steel base help?
We are unsure, will drive down there as soon as we can get a look

the exhaust did hit the quick disconnect and almost blow it off compleatly form the pitch, it should power slide away not pitch or go straight up
So that’s what 16.7 million pounds of thrust sounds like! I’m definitely going to the next launch!
