That thing is so freaking massive, in how it looks, in how it sounds, in how it's named, in the launch pad, in how excited it makes me! Just everything about it. Awesome to feel like humanity is daring something cool and insane.
Anything within 5km has risk of hearing damage without protection. 120 dB will give you guaranteed hearing damage within 5 minutes, probably sooner. This was (calculated estimate) on the order of 90-100 dB at 5km, which will give you hearing damage within 30 minutes, probably sooner.
Thanks. Was my first time really tracking a rocket all the way through. Next time I will probably plan it better. The vibrations from the sound really made it difficult cuz everything was shaking
@@CSIStarbaseAnd I'd like to point out this is probably the very first launch in which you can ACTUALLY HEAR the booster RIGHT UP UNTIL staging. Now that is frikkin insane!
That sound is insane. I read years ago that the loudest man-made sustained sound (other than a nuclear blast) was the launch of a Saturn V at 203 decibels. I wonder how Starship compares to that in terms of decibel level, given that it's more than twice as powerful.
@@CSIStarbase I get a number of 136db at 1 mile from the launch site when I look up how loud the Artemis I launch was. Sound levels for Saturn V launches varied with some reporting levels as low as 180db and as high as 235db.
@@geoffallan The only measurement I can easily find that lists a distance is from the BBC who claim that the noise of a Saturn V was 120db at 1.5 miles from the launch complex. The 200+ decibel measurements were apparently taken 100 meters from the pad but I can't find a solid source on that.
Them rocket engines were SPANKING the air HARD! All of that SNAPPING and CRACKLING!!! That's just on my speakers in my computer. Can you imagine what that sounded like in person?!
Easily the third most amazing thing I've ever watched, behind the birth of my two kids, and just ahead of the launch of Apollo 17 when I was a kid. Gotta make it down to Boca Chica in person at some port to see it with my own eyes.
Thank you! Was my first time really tracking an object like that. Last time I lost it in the clouds after about 15 seconds. I also had to do it this with manual focus which I’ve never done before.
@@CSIStarbase Manually focusing a camera is harder than people think/expect especially in the age of auto-focus cameras. Tracking any moving object, while keeping it in frame, is also quite hard. Doing both of those things at once is just a whole nother level of difficult.! You'll get it next time Zack.
Absolutely best launch coverage of the 2nd Super Heavy - Starship test flight. 1.... good positioning, 2.... good tracking, 3.... nice steady camera work. 4.... and ..... 0:31 OMG!!! 😱😱😱😱😱😱 just listen to the unimaginable loud crackle of the rocket when it reaches a certain altitude, jeezus this is like constant sonic booms going off by thousands of fighter jets breaking the sound barrier. This must be No.1 of the loudest rocket burner crackles I have ever heard in my life, definitely in person it would sound incredible.
It was. I got to see this beast take off from South Padre Island. Well worth the massive trip down from Canada. The sound could be felt from head to toe
Never hesitate to put up a video like this again. This is definitely one of, if not, dare I say, THE BEST footage of this launch I have ever seen, heard and felt (or at least made me feel like I experienced it).

@@CSIStarbase The roll program is a great deep-dive topic. In the past, they performed the roll to align the rocket with its azimuth. In the case of Starship maybe they roll just to point the telemetry antennas in the optimal direction? How do they accomplish the roll? Gimballing, grid fins, flaps..... Tim Dodd did a piece on the subject called "Why do cylindrical rockets roll?" Maybe a topic for a future CSI deep-dive?
Because I think even if one never seen a rocket before, he or she would know by that visual and audible experience, it this is a very powerful impression of so much raw power, so its natural to feel a bit uneasy and excited at the same time :D Like a Demi god raising up, must be one heck of an experience to see it irl.
I can't even comprehend how deafening that would be in person. It's incredibly cool, but I understand why supersonic flight was banned over populated areas.
You are correct 1:21 the ship was Mach 1. Liftoff was 0:21. At 1:14 we can see the ship go transonic when the cloud forms around the middle of the ship. We know at 0:59 (1:21 in the video), telemetry indicates a speed of 1,128 km/h @ an altitude of 8 km. At 8 km altitude, the speed of sound is about 1,192 km/h. That places the ship within the transonic to supersonic period of the flight.
the PEA predicts 100dB where I imagine this was filmed ... I'm guessing it was a lot louder .. number of engine has increased and the thrust per engine by even more since this was authored www.faa.gov/stakeholderengagement/spacexstarship/appendix-b-starship-rocket-noise-assessment-boca-chica-launch
And the salad really cool we’re good headphones/good speakers, etc.!! Heck, just throug a phone it was amazing!! Amazing footage as well! God, this is so cool !!!
Holy Buddha'n'shizzle! This was stunning with good headphones & a big bottle of cider...I think I might now be a little deafened & everso slightly drunk 🥴
All the way up those shockwaves from those 33 Raptors, the mind boggles. In this video, you can see that very well. Great shots. What also was amazing, where Ellie in space was, the roaring sound came in after a solid 20 seconds from lift off. I found that amazing, but also a bit terrifying. IFT-2 was great. Minor tweaks for booster separation timing and maybe a solution for the propellants keeps downwards? Although, I have no clue how to handle that.
That was awesome, well caught. That can't have been a cheap mic to catch all of that. Did those snaps and pops and bangs go right through you? great video capture also. so many once it got high just went all over the place. nice job!!!
I think at about 1:14, if you slow down the video and look very closely around the stack, the surrounding airspace seems to darken slightly, which to me looks like the formation of the BEAST of a shockwave this thing makes when it passes through the sound barrier.

It's so damn loud you can hear it until staging!
