    Good video and review!
Sometimes an electric chainsaw is much more convenient especially for a home owner that only uses it once a year or less. Nothing worse than wasting a bunch of time trying to troubleshoot a 2 stroke that doesn’t want to run or even dealing with rechargeable batteries that don’t hold much charge because they’ve been sitting too long. Hate wasting more time on the tool for a task rather than the task itself😤
If I grab one I’ll make sure to snug up that bar nut. Thanks!

U will find that saw to be one of your best investments ever as a home owner - even if a 2 cycle engine is on a generator or water pump with a float carbarator ( it's called a vacume jet carb) they can still be difficult to start - up till the 80s before the EPA limited the size of 2cycle gas engines they were preferred by contractors - they out last 4 cycle engines 10:1 also u can set them up on a barrel of premixed gas and let them run continues day in and day out 24/7 - after Katrina I had to do work in N.O. I rented a house with no power - I set a 250 gallon tank of gas on three Harbor freight 800 watt 2 cycle generator - they ran two 5000 BTU air-conditioners, fridge and lights - they ran problem free other than changing spark plugs & fuel filters every 2 months for a yr or better 24/7

I live on several acres of densely forested land and have to do quite a bit of cutting. I own both gas and electric saws, and while the gas saws are a bit more powerful and don't need a cord, the maintenance and hassle of keeping them running makes me lean toward the electric. I have two heavy duty 100' extension cords which allow me to get to 2/3 of my property, and I've found that my Honda 2000 generator runs the saw just fine if I need to go further afield. I haven't used a gas saw for several years now. And with the rapid improvement of battery-powered chainsaws, I might just go cordless when my current electric saw finally dies.

U can go a long ways on an extention cord on those saws - they use series wound motors so lower voltage doesn't harm them u might loose some power at some point - by the book of motors matched to the guage of wire in this case it would be 14 or 16 guage wire - the voltage drop is 10% per mile or 5280 ft with series wound motors as used in electric chain saw - I only run up to 700 ft of extention cord on mine it works fine on that length

I have (2) Kobalt 80-volt 18" Bar Chainsaws and use (2) 5 AH Batteries. Using it on a Southeast LA farm that was devastated by a Hurricane and has been working absolutely great even cutting huge logs and trees. For oil, I like to use Ryobi Bar and chain oil. And NO more pulling and pulling to start a gas-powered chainsaw. My first 80-volt 18" Bar Chain saw with a 5-AH Battery and charger was $400 in Jul 2021. it is still being sold on Lowes website as of 5/26/2024 - I use them on a Southeast LA farm of 18 acres of tall large pine trees that was devastated by a Hurricane with a tornado 10 acres of the property nearly all the trees are down or dead. My chainsaws have been working great even cutting huge logs and trees up to 20"+ logs and it works great. I am also using the 80-volt 10” Pole saw, lawnmower, and Leaf Blower.

I used the lever for the built in sharpener to clear chip buildup out more than to actually sharpen the chain. It managed to cut some hardwood stumps much larger than it's size without bothering the neighbors with hours of 2 stroke noise.

Great review, I've been thinking about purchasing one of these and you've helped me in my decision. This is not your fault but I've made it a habit, whenever possible, to check all the nuts and bolts of small appliances and tools before using them for the first time. Let's not assume that everyone takes pride in their workmanship anymore. The people working the assembly lines of these companies are judged and critiqued on how many per hour. It's all about numbers.

    • @michellekozaczok8201

Ted Garrett, may I suggest, get their 'extended warranty'. Any tool over $30 we automatically get the 1yr extended, and over $60-75 we get the 2yr. The cost is nominal and it has been worth it every single time. No questions, no hassle, any issue at all (from completely broke/not working, to it's making a funny sound/smells weird after using it for a while) you just exchange it for a brand new item off the shelf. One time there were clear signs of neglect/abuse (circular saw left out in rain, dropped countless times) and they still exchanged it. I highly recommend adding it on to your next purchase.

I have wood lots full of 80+ feet high Northern Hemlock that are dying because the climate is getting too warm, wind storm damage, old, etc., and this saw is perfect for some of the cutting I am doing. I have four of these that I have been using over several years. I buy Walmart replacement chains in a three-pack for about $15, $5 each, I don't bother to sharpen them when they get dull. To keep them sharp as long as possible, keep the sheath on, and when off never put the blade on the ground, set it on the sheath, and of course never ever touch the ground when cutting! Today I cut up a wet 8" - 10" log about 10' long. The secret of using this, and any other chainsaw, is to keep the chain SHARP. Keep oil in the reservoir so the chain doesn't run dry. I use old waste oil from auto and mowers, works great. It gives the oil a second use. But store the saw upright so the oil does weep its way out. Now to technique. He trimmed the branches off the top all the way down the log, OK. But then he cut the trunk all the way down the log. Nope, better way, easier and less hassle, start at the small end of the log and cut sections off the log, (small for easier lifting/moving) until you get to the first branch holding up the log. Trim this supporting branch, there are plenty of branches still holding up the log. Cut the log in manageable sections down to the next supporting branch. And then repeat, all the way down the log. Easy and easier! Second, the chain is brand new and is going to stretch the most it will during its life. So, make sure the chains is snug. The reason it came off was because it was loose. Do not be afraid to tighten the chain, the motor is strong enough, so don't be shy about tightening the chain. Make sure you can move the chain, even if it is a bit hard to move. Next, WEAR GLOVES when you are adjusting the chain! If you slip you may get an unpleasant cut or scrape. In case you are wondering I use a Sportsman 20 in. 52 cc 2-Stroke Rear Handle Gas Chainsaw from Home depot for $99 several years ago, for the 24" bigger stuff. It is amazing what this $40 (cheapest was $37) chainsaw can do!

Just purchased the newest version, Feb 2023. I have had several electric chain saws in the past so I'm not new. The chain came off completely in 10 minutes. Had to remove cover and reinstall. Over the next 2 hours I spent more time putting chain back on than sawing. When it it did saw it was excellent. I notice on the end of the primary gear for chain drive there is only a thin washer that keeps chain from slipping off. Chain would slip between washer and gear stopping sawing. Best cutter I've had but chain issues drive you nuts. Also, the cord feature is too lightweight for a heavy duty cord so plan on spending alot of time plugging it back in. Out of five stars a 3. 2 stars for excellent cutter and add a star it's cheap. The no tools chain adjustment seems like a good idea but just works poorly.

Wouldnt has enough “oomph” to restart under pressure with a crappy cord. Should have used more airline but didn’t have enough. Use that cheaper lightweight extension cords for Christmas lights.

An air compressor with an induction motor needs up to 5 times more power to start then to run - today many contractor air compressors use series wound motors those types of motors have brushes - they use the same amount of power to start as they do to run and are far lighter than compressors with induction motors - electric chainsaws use the same type motor - u can run them on a light extention cord for several hundred feet with out damaging the motor - after 3-500 ft u might notice some power loss if ur using a 16/3 extention cord it will not damage the saw motor -

You can buy a 14 in PowerSharp "starter kit" on amazon for about 40 bucks (at least thats what I paid) the bar simply will fit after taking othe old one off and tightening the new one on. It comes pre sharpened and comes with the sharpening stone. It is REALLY easy to sharpen the chain with the PowerSharp system. You simply add the sharpening peice to the bar, run the saw, and push so that stone comes into contact with the bar.
Chainsaw bars (for the most part) are all Oregon bars. They have become an industry standard. That is why its an easy swap to this PowerSharp system. If u bought an electric saw I assure u will be glad u did lol - I've run saws for 50 + yrs - the last 3 yrs I've been using my 39 dollar harbor freight saw & I've cut many rounds up to 14 inches it's slower of course - but the amazing part is the chain just doesn't ware out & it's really easy to file or sharpen - I've been on the same file for 3 yrs now - I normally go thru 3 chains a yr and several files with my gas saw - those electric saws put out a lot or torque at a low speed sence they run slow the chain last a long long time - when I get up in the woods I pack a gen on the back of my truck with 200 ft of exstention cord - it comes out perfect I don't have to gas the saw up constantly - I do have to add oil but sence the gen will run thru the day I don't need to worry about running the saw out of gas - some times gas saws are difficult to start after they run out of gas - I figure in replacement chains I've saved $180 + the files or grinding stones - as for small rounds of 12 inches and smaller it does really well - good luck

@@MakeItorBreakItNow it's worth the money - had worked on chainsaws as a kid - I have been cutting wood eather with cross cut saws or chain saws most of my life - I've had the best of saws over the yrs - I was a senior systems engineer in the offshore oilfields for yrs - I know machines I have no complaints about that saw - if you have been on saws you know that after a day of cutting you will have to replace the chain - that won't happen with that saw - after a long while you will have to change the chain as a result of sharpening it till the chisels are filed away - but not because the chain is streches out to the point you can't take links out any longer - the chain travels slower than on a gas saw or many electric saws - so the chisels dig into the wood and cut - because of the slow chain travel per foot they don't stretch as with other saws - with larger logs say more then 12 inches you might use a wedge to reduce the drag on the top chain - I rarely pull out my larger saws now - of course when on 24 or 36 inch logs you need a bigger saw. - in most cases that saw is adaiquit - as for in the woods just get the regular 1400 watt gen that harbor freight sells and 200 foot of extention cored - it beats gasing up a gas saw - you still have to add oil & mine uses a bit of oil - the generator will burn 1/2 the gas of a gas chain saw for the same cutting - again I have no complaints especially for 30 or 40 dollars - you can get spare chains and files on line for next to nothing - the chain is a S52

HF has a history of dropping tool lines and leaving end users holding the bag with tools they can't get batteries for. Ryobi's 40v batteries are garbage. a freind has gone through 4 batteries in 4 years. i've also taken down a magnolia with a 40 volt ryobi 14 inch brushless, the current version. 3/4 of the way through the cut the battery thermalled on me. we had to let it cool, charge it up some more, then i get the tree down. took another charge to buck the tree up.
that said i'd get a saw that uses a power tool battery rather than a ope battery. i have a dewalt 20v 12 inch brushless. in the video you shot its perfect for delimbing that tree. if you have an existing corded saw i'd combine that with a small cordless. if you want a bigger saw dewalt has a 60 volt saw that won project farms battery saw tests beating an $800 sthil. the 60v flex volt battery also works on dewalt 20v tools.

I bought one of these long enough ago for the 90 day warranty to be long forgotten. It worked well enough to begin with then after some relatively intermittent uses the chain began to slip & ultimately stopped. Looking inside, I found a ~4 inch PLASTIC idler gear between the metal motor gear and the metal chain gear. Metal teeth against plastic teeth. No way the plastic is going to last. The metal gear teeth ate up the plastic gear teeth. It's not worth the money. If you read the one star reviews on the Harbor Freight page, this is mentioned frequently.

Kathman, it still makes noise, coming from a person that used to fly helicopters.

@@MakeItorBreakItNow there's specific gloves for them that won't be caught by the chain but that's one of the things people say, along with tie up your hair and no loose clothes

You just need a practice session before making a video.

What’s the point of comparing the hand to the electric? I can kinda see why but only an idiot would think the hand would be superior. Just wasting time to me.

    • @MakeItorBreakItNow

Von, true, maybe. Sometimes you might need a quick job done and that was the point I was trying to make. Last weekend I hand sawed a 7-inch diameter hickory that had broken off ~20 feet up in a storm. Needed to only fall the trunk, to clear it out to cut later. So I guess I was an "idiot" and cut through by hand, instead of going to the garage getting this chainsaw, running the extension cord, etc. Only took a couple of minutes to handsaw through with this Corona I had readily available in my garden bucket: amzn.to/3Si8Fwt
