  • This is a nearly stock appearing and driving 390 based engine with the 445 stroker kit and EFI. Factory block, factory heads, Factory style oil pan, factory style Duraspark distributor. If you ever wondered what you'd get if Ford had a stroker style engine "back in the day" but added updated induction and cam technology. Not sure if this was the best pull - but we did get over 415 HP and over 500 TQ while retaining lots of vacuum and a modest idle.

    Just ran a very similar engine. Customer supplied Holley 770 carb instead of the EFI. Almost identical numbers with 416 HP and 519 TQ

    I have always loved the ford 390. My first car; is 69’ ford ranchero had one. It was a beast with out all this modern build and fuel injection. Could have used that fuel injection back then. Only got 9 mpg. Over drive would have helped as well. But it would blister the tires. Made a ton of torque. My only complaint. You couldn’t change the damn plugs. Less than a fingers width between spark plug tip and the shock tower....insane.

      Yeah I daily a 68 fairlane with a built 390 and I feel you with the spark plugs.

      Yeah noted Matthew. EFI would really be a thang. Prolly 20% better mileage, easier winter starts.

    Hey Barry what castings were these? I know aluminum aftermarket heads are the way to go but after seeing this video with some parts that don’t exceed the airflow capability of the irons you could make 475 hp with a 390/445 right?

    I doesn't hurt that on the dyno she's attached to a nice set of exhaust headers. My experience with this motor is it's big problem from the factory is how choked it is by the garbage exhaust manifolds they put in the cars. On my TBirds I can get 55 HP just from a set of FPA headers. Suddenly the motor smooths out, HP numbers & torque skyrocket. Other bolt-ons suddenly perform better too.
    How about you truck guys - what exhaust manifold did they put under the hood? They sure sold a lot of 390's in those trucks, and without the tight shock towers I have to deal with.

    Hi Barry! Since you are using the sniper systems now.. Have you messed around with the dual sync distributors and seen what kind of difference you see when the EFI controls the ignition? I ordered the sniper system and wondering if the $350 distributor is worth it.

    This video may answer the question of how much of a boost in power do you get when you go from 390 to 445 under an Edelbrock Performer RPM #2044 kit. This shows 0 horsepower gain but an increase in torque from 434 ft lbs to 500 ft lbs. This is using the dyno chart that Edelbrock uses with the 296 adv. duration, .572 lift cam that comes in the Performer RPM .

    • @Survival427FE
      @Survival427FE  2 года назад +3

      This one has stock heads and a much more street friendly cam compared to the Edelbrock package.

    This is exactly what I want to put in my '67 S-Code.....well almost! ;) This, with a set of aftermarket heads. Any thoughts on what will it do with a set of aftermarket heads? (Realizing there are differences between yours, TFS, BBM, and Edelbrock of course) Would you modify any other specs with a set of heads? Just looking for a strong street engine that runs as good as the body style looks!

      You can calculate potential HP if you know the flow numbers for the heads. I have Edelbrock rpm heads on my 445 with no modifications. It works out to 380hp. Now if you modified the exhaust ports so they flow the same amount as the intake then hp is over 400.

    I have a bone stock 1964 Z code 390, i have been having a lot of trouble getting the intake to seal properly, are steel lined gaskets really good to use?

    • @kblackav8or
      @kblackav8or 3 года назад +1

      If heads or block have been milled you may have to get the intake milled to match.

  • @michaelkirkwood3316
    @michaelkirkwood3316 3 года назад +1

    So you got the 390 block you got a 428 crank in the 390 block so what rods are you running with the 428 crank in the 390 rods to get the stroke that you need

    • @slick-px4pq
      @slick-px4pq 3 года назад +3

      It's not a 428 crank. 428 crank has a 3.98 stroke. A 445 uses a 4.25 stroker crank.

    • @imanenigma3348
      @imanenigma3348 2 года назад +4

      428 crank in 390 block/bore = Mercury 410 package
      1966 to 1967 only.

      @@Survival427FE thanks. More than enough for the little 66 F100 i have. I want a fun street motor that cruises well. 415hp and 500tq is enough to get me thrown in jail lol

    • @slick-px4pq
      @slick-px4pq 2 года назад

      @@JohnnyRebKy I know this is almost a year old, I built one of these engines with MSD atomic efi. It's in a 65 F250 with a tremec 5 speed, 4.56 gear. I used a 218/224 duration cam so it idles pretty nice and makes 17 or 18 inches of vacuum. I believe peak torque is in the low 3000's. Pulls HARD! You would definitely like it but your wallet will not.

    • @JohnnyRebKy

      @@slick-px4pq well I’m not to worried about my wallet. It’s still cheaper than buying a new truck. I’m gonna make a daily driver out of my 66 and it be me only truck. I’m fed up with modern trucks. I got a 2011 F150 right now I can’t even drive because of some sensor in the transmission acting up. Speed output sensor to be exAct. I thought it was no big deal until I learned you gotta drop the trans pan AND valve body to get the damn sensor out and replace it. Whoever designed that ought to have their ass kicked! It’s ridiculous! Don’t get me wrong I like the coyote 5.0 v8 and 6 speed auto but when something goes wrong it’s a pain in the ass. So I’m gonna fix it and sell it. Take the money and make my 66 a good reliable daily. An aftermarket efi and tremec 5 speed are a must. 350-400hp is more than enough. My 2011 5.0 is 365hp so that power in the little 66 should move it more than adequately. Efi and 5 speed overdrive should produce decent mpg too with a 3:55 gear 👍
      Sorry for the rant
