Henry is an amazing character in this movie. The film shows how you can’t really trust anyone in this world, something we all learn when it’s too late, just like the king did.

I dont think he learned it too late - he wasnt trusting anyone before he became King. But he learned to trust after he became King and luckily had great people around he can trust and thats how he won the war with France.

You realise, that this film is a british propaganda and is constantly lying on historical facts in order to do some french bashing. In fact it couldn't be further away from reality. The Henry V portrayed in this movie is a insult to any man or woman that knows a bit about history.
      Let me educate you:
      1) Henry V was a super violent savage to his people. He did not care a bit for the men that fought for him and treated them as badly as was possible in medieval Europe
      2) He constantly violated the codes of chivalry
      3) He was everything but an handsome young man. In fact he was a very ugly man and was stung in a war (before France) by an arrow (in 1403, battle of Shrewsbury, before his coronation) that severally disfigured him on his right cheek. That's also the reason why there is only 1 representation of him and that it only shows his left profile.
      4) Historians (including british historians), describe Henry V as one of the most agressive and devious products of a time of violence and duplicity
      5) He was never provoked by France, as shown in the movie. He started assembling his army a long time before invading France
      6) France never tried to assassinat him.
      7) he was the one, that declared war on France
      ---------
      8) The french king was a very pious and discret 18 year old man
      9) He kept himself far from battlefields because of his poor health. He was not even there in Azincourt.
      10) He died a few weeks after Azincourt because of his very poor health.
      11) After the battle of Azincourt he threatened his soldiers to cut of their ears if any sound was to be heard in the night.
      12) He asked every prisoner to be killed after the battle. His men didn't want to follow his cruel orders, but finally 20 men accomplished his wishes. 2000 prisoner where killed by axes and masses in the head or burned alive.
      --------
      10) In the movie the English troops are shown to be all foot soldiers, which is completely wrong because in reality they where nearly all mounted on horses. In fact is the Azincourt campaign was a chase between France and England. The british started at Harfleur (Normandy), the french started at Rouen (Normandy) and it ended as we all know in Azincourt (Pas-de-Calais)
      11) In reality the siege of Harfleur was a lot more hard for the English as portrayed in the movie. 400 french soldiers fought no less than 11.300 English soldiers for more than 1 month. The English tried to attack the castle by attacking trough tunnels and the french attacked them by doing counter tunnels which led to fierce underground battles. Besides that, the french went out many times (of the castle) to attack the English. The English lost more than 2.000 men and the french around 140 men. 2.000 additional English soldiers had to go back to England after the siege because of injuries and illnesses.
      ---------
      12) At Azincourt, the french have never been on the top of the hill, because the English where on the hill, which is a tactical better place (especially for bows). So the english had the advantage from the start
      13) The english archers where not visible as the hided in the woods on the side of the battlefield
      14) Because of the mud and the arrows that came from each side, chaos started amongst the french knights. their horses panicked and fled in the direction of the french army (that caused a lot of causalities)
      15) Very few french knight where able to attain the english army. Those who did, cazsed a lot of damage to the english and the personal guard of the King was nearly entirely killed

The dialogues, the acting, the tension, the atmosphere, the music, the monologues, the stakes, the emotions, everything is perfect. Even if the real story is different. King Henry 5 was not at all a conciliatory king, or kind, he was actually very cruel, and murdered many innocent people ; he plunged France into the most deadly holy war through the centuries. He died shortly (2 years) after marrying Catherine. The film is taken from Shakespear's play, fictionalized, to glorify England and ridicule France. When in France, at this time the monarchy was affected by hereditary madness, which greatly weakened the kingdom and allowed England to establish its power and control. beyond that, in terms of pseudo fiction, the film is incredible. Timothée is absolutely stunning in the skin of this young King, on whom weighed a lot of weight.

@@Julien-yc3zy 1) Yes Henry was violent but this is the Middle Ages and to be a good king you had to assert authority, just look at his son Henry VI. He was the complete opposite to his father you could say he was kind however, this led to a bloody civil war, much worst than what his father did.
      2) Yes Henry did break the rules of chivalry at Agincourt, what choice did he have though? He had more prisoners than he did soldiers. Let’s be honest did those French prisoners deserve mercy for what they intended to do to the English?
      3) No Henry was not ugly and even if he was so what? Do you believe a king ruled effectively from their good looks? Henry did get an arrow to the face at Shrewsbury however, he made a full recovery with a battle scar that could only compliment him on his bravery in battle.
      4) Louis was not an 18 year old king, he was the son of Charles VI or Charles the Mad because well he was mad. Louis was not promising and was a weak man who fuelled a feud between the Armagnacs and the Burgundians. He died of dysentery shortly after Agincourt.
      5) If you are going to lecture anyone on accuracy please don’t call the English as being British, they weren’t. The Scottish were actually one of Frances biggest supporters and fought against the English in numerous battles during the Hundred Years’ War.
      6) You clearly don’t know what Henry’s tactic was at Agincourt do you? Firstly, Agincourt was a flat field and is not known for its hills. Secondly, the English had no advantage other than the fact they were fighting in winter where the ground was wet and muddy. Henry ordered his men to dig stakes into the ground to protect the majority of the army who were archers, which was to provide protection for the archers against cavalry attacks, which worked.
      7) Henry did care for his subjects very much. He is known to be the first King of England since the times of Harold Godwinson to write all his accounts and correspondence in English, he banned the use of French in parliament and wanted to strive for prosperity across England.

However, he would have just been made king because of it. Because of his skills in diplomacy he managed to be made regent and heir to the Kingdom of France. His victories were no more important than what Edward III’s were during the early parts of the war, in fact Edward did more as his reign was 50 years long. I don't understand why this moovie shows Henry V as a peaceful king. In the end he was doing an invasion. He also executed hundreds of prisoners during his (lost) campaign

I can't stand this movie, it makes me so angry because it's as far from historical facts as it can be.
If you look at this movie and you know the bare minimum about the 100 year war history, you can't over watch that anglo-saxon propaganda and the constant and unrealistic french-bashing.

    • @davidturner6280
      @davidturner6280 3 года назад +23

It is not based on real history, is based of the Shakespeare play so you could probably do a bit of research before claiming the movie is propaganda.

Doesn't the film end with treachery in Henry's ranks, and wisdom and righteousness being demonstrated by the French?
I'd say this film is more on the side of shining too good a light on Henry than it is guilty of any particular shade on the French.

    • @beccymay701

I see these comments about French bashing all the time on videos about this film. But actually I see no French bashing here. In fact, other than the Dauphin, the French characters are reflected very well. I think you are being a bit overly sensitive....
