A tribute to one of my favorite characters from Vikings. I really love his connection with so many amazing characters from the show (Athelstan, Ecbert, Ragnar). I was pleased that at least one character I like made it through the end of the show.

The only English king given the title of the Great, and he earned that not by killing and conquering and betraying, but by being a good man.
Really one of the frist people in the world to push the idea to teaching literature and how to read and write. It is said the vikings were astonished by all the books they found in monistrys because obviously they hadn't yet learnt to read or write
Cnut was also given the title of "The Great". Alfred was the Second King to ever earn the title. King Cnut and King Alfred are the only two Great Kings of England.

Alfred’s arc was amazing, you saw him go from a meek, sick child. into Alfred the great

I think that's kinda how it was in real life too which is what makes it cooler. It was said that he had Crohn's disease so he very well could've been sick quite often throughout his reign as king.
He was the fifth son who knows he would be one of the greatest king in England history when he grow up

Alfred and Ivar are the epitome of inspiration...two eventual kings who were born disabled, weak or sick. Their arc from being young weak or crippled men, doubted all their lives to becoming the kings that they became is amazing...their will is legendary
Love how this manages to pay tribute not only to Alfred but also to Ecbert. The one who started it all and the one who finished.
Thank you, Ecbert is my favorite character so I had to tie him in there. A big part of why I like Alfreds character was because of his upbringing with Ecbert.

Ecbert may not have been a good man, but he knew what he was doing.
He counted on Alfred to be that good man, using what he and Aethelwulf had left behind for him.
Alfred in Vikings is ok, but the real Alfred the Great is in The last kingdom. Such a great character and brilliant acting by David Dawson, he IS Alfred.
After recently watching TLK I would agree with this. The only thing with this version I like better is who he is connected to (Athelstan, Ragnar, Ecbert).

Alfred in The Last Kingdom would smash the Alfred in Vikings. I fucking love the way David Dawson executed the frail in body but extremely strong in soul Alfred. Absolutely Emmy deserving performamce
At the beginning we're not really meant to like Alfred. But as the show progresses aflred easily becomes most everyone's favorite character. He stole the spotlight frome uhtred early on.
One of the reasons I prefer the last kingdom over Vikings is the way I believe it better portrays both sides. Vikings I felt shit on the Anglo-Saxons far too much. They made them look weak, evil, and greedy. While they made the Danes look like the conquering heros. The last kingdom portrays the good and bad of both sides very well. Which in turn shows you how important a man like Alfred was to his country.

Beloved Alfred the Great! Some say, he is a saint...
The real King Alfred is recognized as a Saint by The Orthodox Church, the Roman Catholics and the Anglican and Episcopalian church. He was pronounced a saint centuries ago before they even had the current system the Catholics use. Saint King Alfred the Great, pray for us.

everyone native to the uk is related the Alfred, you go back that long and we are all related. I remember seeing that thing on QI where they said everyone in Western Europe is related to Charlemagne.

A king you could love. A king to be proud of. A king you would die for. His Grandson achieved his dream of England though he laid down the foundations of this beautiful country. This country could do with an Alfred the Great right now. I follow the Gods and he did not but one God though doesn’t diminish the absolute respect I have for this man and what he did for England during his life.

My opinion I liked the series but didnt like the raiding and plundering and raping vikings, they started invading wessex. I liked Alfred, noble, humble, despite his illness not walking away from the problems he had to overcome.

I am not sure of your favorite King or Queen, not the best examples...Alfred King of Wessex is NOT a king of England. This will come later, the concept of a single country England is not accepted yet during Alfred Era ..... Richard the Lionheart is not the best example of a King, because of his not so famous actions in the Crusades and Queen Elizabeth the First, killed her royal cousin Mary, Queen of Scotland. Elizabeth will say later in life, that she signed the death document because of a mistake, having to many papers to sign on her desk, she made a mistake !!!

Aethelred I of Wessex was mortally wounded in battle on Martin Down, Hampshire, and died of his wounds in nearby Wimborne Minster (where he is buried).
Aelfred was probably present at the battle and succeeded him.
The last kingdom Aethelred is the nephew of king Alfred. And Wexes was conquered by the Danes. Ubba was slain by Uthred Ragnarsans.

Try The last kingdom, in my opinion it's better than Vikings, but it is not from Viking perspective. And is historically much more accurate. Alfred in it is brilliant, you just can't find better.

next time upgrade your audio dude!. it's broken a little bit, but it's incredible the video performance.
I don't decide the quality of audio. I simply use raw footage. If audio sounds off it is because not all audio in the show is clear and smooth. People mumble, people whisper. Background setting and audio can change this as well. I create the experience to be compatible with headphones, specifically mine. From my perspective, everything sounds fine. If you would like to tell me how I can "upgrade my audio" I'm all ears. Only been doing this for a short while so there very well could be something I'm missing.
Alfred here is so much better than the weak paranoid one on the Last Kingdom.

He was afforded the title of being great in recent times by relatively modern historians. Assar, a Welsh scholar taught Alfred reading and writting. Prior to this the Saxons were illiterate. It is ironic that the native Cymru were portrayed as savages, when they were Christian hundreds of years before the Saxon arrived on this island and they taught Alfred's inner circle to read write and acquire culture. This of course has been airbrushed from view.

To be honest, I didn't really like this version of Alfred, because this Alfred in this series was a soy boy spoiled by Judith and Ecbert, treating him as predestined to the detriment of his brother Aethelred, which goes against the true story of Alfred the Great, a man who had to face great adversity with his poor health and who only became king due to the death of his brother Aethelred in battle. Sorry, but I hate Judith and Ecbert, and Alfred is a product of those sinister characters. Furthermore, Alfred in this series is portrayed as a bastard, so in real life Alfred was actually Aethelwulf's biological son and he was the youngest of four brothers.
I found Alfred's view of his father Aethelwulf rude after inheriting the throne, who is the best anglo-saxon character, who treated him as his son and then showed the same fetish as Ecbert and Judith to Athelstan, who never got to know him.
