I agree. I just bought a Tiny Pump 2X, and weighed it. I found that it’s 1.8 oz heavier than the pump sack that came with my Thermarest. While I don’t want any additional weight, I’ll accept 1.8 oz to avoid having to use the pump sack after a long day on the trail. And if taking advantage of the light feature enables you to drop another piece of gear, you may not be carrying any extra weight at all.
I'm intending to do some bike camping this year, and have not even tried out my mat yet, but I knew as soon as I tried to pump it up with the bag (at least 18 pumps if I remember rightly) that I was not going to enjoy that bit of camping! Really good video. I'm off to buy one!
Haha yep, I'm right there with you on that. I get a flash of enjoyment every time I whip out my pump, and never EVER miss using that infernal bag 😂 Bike camping will be great fun, I'm sure!
I just got mine and it seems pretty decent quality. It took 2 weeks to get it in the US. I also got the zippered hard shell case for it and the case is unnecessarily large. I think I'll just use the small bag it came with to carry it in my pack. I don't count ounces, so it's a good addition to my camping gear. Cheers!
Congrats on the new kit! I sometimes think about stripping back my kit to the bare essentials for multi-day hiking...but I don't think I could bring myself to leave the Flextail pump at home 😂 They're just so convenient! Happy pumping 😄
Totally agree! I have the Xtherm and was always concerned about the potential damage I was causing it by trying to force that blooming attachment on. I got myself the tiny pump and haven’t looked back. Sooo useful that it doubles up as a lantern. Cool review. Pillow looks cool too. I currently use the Aluft and struggle a little with a crook neck so May give that one a go. All the best. Al.
I'm sure we're not the only ones! It's surprising that Thermarest were happy with that design really. The cover on the Flextail pillow feels really luxurious after the Aluft. Feels like you're in a health spa 🤣 Cheers for watching 👍 James.
We've been using my sea to summit pump sack, it's one of the better's ones out there because of the smaller neck which then has a big sack, blew up my mat in approx 4 sack fulls, but as you point out in your video, it's got a light built in too, we've got 2 mats to inflate so I think we'll definitely be putting this on our list, cheers James ☺️ good video 👌
Yeah a pump sack that works well is a really good piece of kit! Big sack, easy nozzle, good flow rate - winning 😎 I do feel smug just pressing a button and leaving the electric pump to do the work for me though 🤣 Cheers Kim ✌️ James.
I always prefer pump sacks! Superb sharing ❤️💓💓! Lot of love and respect from a solo mountain hiker friend from the Hindu Kush Mountains Lower Chitral District of Pakistan!
Haha my thoughts also. In fairness, my Exped mat and pump sack were great. Totally different experience to the Thermarest, plus the Exped pump sack can double up as an inflatable stool!
A great product from flextail. The improved nossle seems a lot better than the original as I also find my adapters can drop off easily too. The pillow looks like the best pillow I have seen due to the 2 different heights.
Yeah they're doing good things! The two thicknesses and removal, machine washable cover on the pillow seem like obvious design features now that they're here. Cheers for watching! James.
Had my pump for 18 months now, absolute game changer, wouldn’t do without it,and mine has a light at the bottom which a bonus, also with the pump,no moisture inside your mat 👍
I’m a pump sack man. The connector is a little stiff but I don’t find it a struggle. An electric pump is an extra thing to think about and tech that can go wrong. I improved the sack by seam sealing it. I also find I’ve plenty of time to waste before bed time so I don’t mind if if takes a few minutes. Lo tech for me.
I fully understand this viewpoint, and if I'm honest, I'm slightly disappointed in myself for enjoying the electric pump over the simplicity of the pump sack 🤣 My Exped pump sack is completely airtight, so the leaky Thermarest counterpart was a surprise. Good idea, seam sealing yours 👌 I hope you'll be using it a bit more this year, Pete!
High Cup Nick seems to be turning into the Pen Y Fan of the north. Have you noticed an increase in foot traffic up there? The knee is putting on a good show so far this year! 💪

They're brilliant little gadgets aren't they? Firmly in the category of "Used to think it was an unnecessary luxury but now it's mandatory" for me! Good to hear from you, Al, and thanks for the comment 😊 James.
Both of my sleep mats (Thermarest NeoAir XTherm and Exped SynMat UL7) have non-return valves built into the inflation port. So you can blow air in, but it doesn't come out again.
@@joinmeoutdoors quick question...on the first white version pump, is a quick depress start the air? I was charging it, and noticed that at least the lights were long clicks.
That's right for the light - a long press to turn it on, and then a short press each time you want to make the light brighter. For the pump, it's a double short press to turn it on and off 👍
@@joinmeoutdoors oh. Thanks. I couldn't find the instructions, and the box didn't seem to say. I did get it to work at first...must have done the double click and not realized. Hi Mark. The Tiny Pump 2X has a push button on the side. It's the grey bit you can see in the side of the orange body. Not sure if that answers your question?

Boom, that exactly it. Plus it helps deflate your pad in the morning as well. Brilliant little things!

Ok, this is definitely on my 'to-buy' list for this year. It's smaller than my tent lamp and doubles up as a pump. Winner all round.
That's how I justified the purchase to myself too, and I don't regret it one bit!

I like good pump sacks too! 😁
Definitely looks like a 'must have' item - nice clear review - thanks.
To me it's become one of those non-essential essentials!
Without watching I already know the answer is yes, use an electric pump.. the pump sack is annoying to use and can double up as a lamp
Haha my thoughts also. In fairness, my Exped mat and pump sack were great. Totally different experience to the Thermarest, plus the Exped pump sack can double up as an inflatable stool!

When removing the flextail from the sleeping pad,how do you prevent air from escaping?
Both of my sleep mats (Thermarest NeoAir XTherm and Exped SynMat UL7) have non-return valves built into the inflation port. So you can blow air in, but it doesn't come out again.
I get to see the videos with discounts after I bought the pillow and pump. 😅
