      It looks like you're using an XMG laptop for this review. I ordered an Apex laptop from them a week ago. I've got to say that their ordering experience is less than desirable. The only confirmation of my order that I received so far was one email stating that my order was not confirmation of a contract/purchase even though they immediately took the money from my bank account. The only thing I can see on their website is that the order is processing. It looks like they haven't even started the build a week after I purchased it. This may not be the case but they could do a hell of a lot better with feed back. I expected a lot more from a company that is so revered by tech RUclipsrs.
      What has your purchasing experience been like when ordering from XMG?

      I think it'll be another 4gb card. Or 6gb at best. Because nvidia is using 128 bit for the rtx 4060, and that will have 8gb. So I think a rtx 4050 would at best have 6gb of vram if nvidia goes with 96bit. Maybe nvidia might even go with 64bit and just give the 4050 4gb of vram.

    Laptop vs Desktop is utterly use case dependent.
    Personally, when someone asks me what to get if they are at ALL unsure about the need for mobility, laptop. Doubly so if they’re not tech savvy, as they can easily bring it to me wherever I am to tinker with. I’ve set up multiple people with hubs + laptop stands as desktop replacements in the last few years, all VERY happy. My SIL never leaves the house so we built her a ballin 10700k/3070 rainbow puke desktop a bit ago, also very happy.
    TLDR: PCMR can suck it, a good 3060/3070 laptop is honestly fine for 90% of people, but a desktop will always give you more FPS per dollar if prices aren’t crazy, and do it much quieter.

    • @ultimategohan1551
      @ultimategohan1551 2 года назад +5

      This is true, especially when it comes to simplicity of updating software/drivers, laptops take the cake. Usually can be done from 1 songle website/control center. However this can also be a con as laptop manufacturers have their own gpu drivers, which are usually not up to date by a large margin.

    • @probablemisclick
      @probablemisclick 2 года назад

      @@ultimategohan1551 Exactly. All warranty, software, troubleshooting is (mostly) single source. As the person they'll call when things get weird, this is ideal. And the super powerful CPU's of today combined with decreased terribleness of most OEM software, it doesn't really drag the system down to keep it there.
      I have found that for the iGpu you def need the OEM specific drivers. From what I can tell, it must be a tie-in with Optimus/Hybrid modes for laptops packing dGpu's, and OEM efficiency/power setups for non dGpu rigs.. For dGpu's though I've had pretty consistent luck across multiple brands and models for installing directly from Nvidia.

      11 days late but you're absolutely right.
      Especially with laptop performance for the ~1000 USD- 1300 USD range becoming more competitive with desktop performance with the added benefit of portability, there is less of a reason to built a PC unless you're likely to stay home 90% of the time. That's why I got myself a new Alpha 15 for 940$. I could use it with a monitor if I needed the extra screen size but its portability allows me to carry it to college or travel home with me on a 3 hours trip. And this is despite my other less tech savvy friends saying ' why don't I just buy a PC with that money'. Coz I can't carry everything home with me LOL

      On desktops? Not even close. On laptops? Again, not even close.
      On both accounts the gtx 1060 was FAR more impressive at its launch. Because that mobile 1060 6gb was trading blows with desktop gtx 980's. It was so powerful, skylake and kaby lake mobile were literally bottlenecking it. And unlike the mobile 3060, it didn't get its vram gimped.
      Infact, the mobile 3gb 1060 retained the full core count, unlike the desktop 3gb 1060. So like the 3060 mobile, the 1060 3gb mobile, packed more cores than the desktop version.
      And the most impressive part? It didn't need 130w to get within 8-10% of a desktop 1060. It did it at just 80w. And did all that while being CPU and optimus bottlenecked.

    What's surprising/shocking is the differences are greater as you go up the ladder from 3060 all the way to 3080 when comparing desktop vs laptop gpu. But the 3050 has differences as the 3080's. One would expect it to have even less differences if any at all considering the 3060s are a really close match.

    • @tabalugadragon3555
      @tabalugadragon3555 11 месяцев назад

      there is nothing surprising if you look at the specs. 3060m is closer by its specs to desktop version, hence why it's much closer. while 3050 laptop and 3080 laptop versions are nothing like the desktop version, hence the result.
      Power limits are important, but raw specs matter more. Another perfect example - laptop 3070 ti has the same specs as desktop 3070. Which is why it's only about 5% slower on average, despite 40% difference in power.
      If anybody tells you laptops are only cut down because they have limited cooling don't believe them, it's just manufacturers trying to scam their buyers.

  • @joelconolly5574
    @joelconolly5574 2 года назад +18

    Even at 6GB difference the 3060 laptop isn't as slow as it's desktop counterparts, and seeing the almost similar wattage of the 3060 laptop to the desktop and the slightly higher CUDA, the laptop 3060 is possibly the closest to it's desktop brothers than any laptop GPU produced so far, although it'll probably change in the next generation as per usual.
    The VRAM for the 3050 laptop is probably the reason it's far behind the desktop side, and whatever is different to eachother. I suggest getting it only if you plan on entering PC gaming, getting boost for games that are CPU limited like DOTA or getting help in application that requires dGPU acceleration. But not more.

    And yet during the gpu shortage times it was still cheaper to get an rtx powered laptop then building an entire new desktop pc, which sort of evens out a lot of the performance loss.
    Laptops certainly made quite some progress to an extend i found it easy to replace my aging desktop and are now using 2 laptops (one dektop replacement one on the go).
    Now that prices come down again it will be a different story. But there where quite some great laptop deals during black friday event on amazon.
    Looking forward on the 4000 series and amd 7000 series laptop gpu´s and how the prices will be even so i should be fine till next years black friday sales or even longer.
    My rtx 3080 laptop does what it´s supposed to and the rtx 3050 non ti laptop is still quite fast for the low price i paid for it and able to play whatever games (specially with dlss) at good fps.
    One thing i would like to see is that nvidia stops this wrong lableing of gpu´s. IF you cut the cores/tmus/rops etc then it´s no longer the same and it´s certainly misleading when people read rtx 3050 on a laptop yet they essentially get what would be more likely a 3040. Nvidia just be honest once.... You can essentially go down 1-2 steps compared to desktop gpu´s with rtx laptop equivalents, probably 1 step with max p models and closer to 2 steps with max q models.

    I own a 1050 ti laptop. Problem with that is sustained performance. Initially it was good. Its been 4 years and now after I run even an old title (like Witcher 3) for over an hour, the FPS drops from 40-45 to 30-35 which is annoying. This is happening even after cleaning and reapplying thermal paste (maybe just wears off after 6-7 months). With desktop though, you can basically futureproof it. I'd say, if you are a bachelor then go buy a laptop (assuming you would be travelling a lot between your college and hometown), otherwise buy a desktop.

    The differences are big because the 3050 laptop have 4Gb of Vram and Desktop 3050 have 8Gb of Vram..... This test is useless. When vram hit 4GB (full) performance degradation is huge. In fact, GPU computational power is similar (many games fps differences are really near) but in game like metro exodus differences are huge. So? Suddently the GPU computational power drop? No. The problem is that metro exodus need way more than 4 GB of Vram with that graphic quality settings. 3050 is a great every day gaming/ esport GPU, but 4 GB of vram is a mistake. 6 GB are perfect....8 Gb maybe too much to handle. For manage full 8GB of vram (with ultra quality texture) is not a job for a 3050.....so are wasted money. RTX3050 is really good for esport at 1080 with normal/High settings where 4gb of vram are right.

      Core count DIRECTLY affects power efficiency(hence why Pascal or 1000 series GPU-s were so close to their desktop versions and why 2000 series wasn't that much behind), and 4GB of memory is a terrible limitation these days.
      " look at the difference between an rtx 2070 80w mobile gpu and a 115w version in a better/bigger laptop."
