• Krokodil Ce 6/8 III 14305
The production "Crocodiles" were the series SBB Ce 6/8 II and SBB Ce 6/8 III locomotives of the SBB, Swiss Federal Railways, built between 1919 and 1927. There were 33 class Ce 6/8 II and 18 class Ce 6/8 III, making a total (excluding the prototype) of 51 locomotives. These locomotives were developed for pulling heavy goods trains on the steep tracks of the Gotthardbahn from Lucerne to Chiasso, including the Gotthard Tunnel.
The electric motors available at the time were large and had to be body-mounted above the plane of the axles, but flexibility was required to negotiate the tight curves on the Alpine routes and tunnels. An articulated design, with two powered nose units bridged with a pivoting center section containing cabs and the heavy transformer, met both requirements and gave excellent visibility from driving cabs mounted safely away from any collision. The two motors in each nose unit were geared to a jackshaft between the drive axles farthest from the cab, with side rods carrying the power to the drivers. These locomotives, sometimes called the "Swiss Crocodile" or "SBB Crocodile", were highly successful and served until the 1980s. The German model railway manufacturer Märklin published a book about their history in 1984.] Several are still in operation as preserved historical locomotives.
what was its top speed?
@@RenaissancePeopleNYC According to the Wikipedia article, from which Jason Wilson's information is pasted, the top speed is 75 kph (47 mph). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crocodile_%28locomotive%29
Here is the Austrian crocodile, OBB class 1189, built in the late 1920s. I believe 18 were built.

Do you know the weight of each motor, their physical size and HP rating?
@@marcconyard5024 Look on Online Wikipedia, there's lots more good information there. .
This is a fine example of an outstanding locomotive. It looks like they just outshopped her.
That is one of coolest locomotives I have ever seen. Sounds a bit like a steamer
justly famous class. I'm only a bit over an hour from Koblenz! I need to find out how to know when these veterans are on the road.
You've got the whine of the 4 motors, coupled with the noise from straight-cut gears which varies with the position of the connecting rods
they were built in 1919 and used regularly on the Gotthard railway until 1986, they still run like a clock, despite only being museumpieces now..... try that with todays electronic tupperwares on wheels:)
Very good video, but nowhere can I find one of 'under the covers' of a Krokodil. When restoration is happening, can we see all the internal working layout of the loco with its cowling removed?
I may have answered my own query when I found this
ruclips.net/video/grCzLBxkkcE/видео.html
It would still be great for enthusiasts to see hatches opened and covers removed - where possible of course.
Ein Wahnsinnsteil die Lok, einfach herrlich anzusehen.👍
That is ONE kool looking Engine, wish I had the resources to travel to see this kind of stuff ,but content to sit here and watch on this internet
So cool!!! 👍👍👍👍
Lokomotive!
What a beautiful beast!
Nice locomotive, in India such type of locomotive available generally and nickname was "Crab' class WCG1
Nicknamed kekda ....used in the Igatpuri ghats till the mid 1980s atleast
Sir Leslie Wilson is what it was called by GIP. Ive seen it shunting trains in the Dadar CR rail yard.
Fascinating locomotive!
The model from the other video seems more realistic than the real thing
Those huge links that connect electric motor to driven wheels make very sweet sound. I wonder why they were needed?
Beautiful video! 👍👍👍
Sehr schön 👍👍👍
I would love this to visit the UK, a showstopper if ever there was one!
A well maintained Shunting Loco like our WDS series in Indian Railways
This makes Swiss children go to bed early
Welp... this is now my new favorite train
First of all thank you utube for give us a advertising free video.
2:35 sounds like its saying vittu
Wow well remarked, actually sounds like a group of men saying that indeed

wow!
Nice Old Days...
@@Hoshikani

Looks like a cousin to the Pennsylvania L5, good to see the older stuff well maintained and running.
I've just googled Pennsylvania L5, I see the close family likeness!
Boxpok Except this one will always be better because it’s swiss
The *Pennsylvania L5* is actually a direct technological descendant of the *Crocodile.* The Swiss pioneered electrical locomotives and *Crocodile* was first built in 1919 in Switzerland by a consortium that included Brown Boveri. Brown Boveri was later seminal in the building of the *Pennsylvania L5* - first built in 1924 in the US.

LOL! That took me a minute.
the blue loc just to the right?? big eyes, big mouth?
@@boristhebarbarian Yes.
Now that's a beast! :-o One is not quite sure whether he's looking at an electric or a steam locomotive. :-)
PontiacCZ it’s electric
I can see why they called this Crocodile, it does look like one with its snout like (what I assume to be) engine covers
No engines, just big transformers and switch gear. Same difference really though.
@@herpnderpn2484 I'm sorry, but you're wrong. The electric motors and the drive are placed in both "snouts", the middle section carrys the transformer.
Here is an description:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crocodile_(locomotive)
Hello Macintoshiba, that's right. In both front sections are motors and drive, in the middle part is the transformer.
Please have a look at this description: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crocodile_(locomotive)
Superb! Very very very good video and sound ! Great!
Greetings from Zagreb / Croatia
Wow! This is a legend!!
I did not think these Still Existed❤️Beautiful Locos 💕Thats what I love about Continental Railways.
Looks so classical.
And the motor sound is so nice‼️
I like how it sounds a bit like a steamer at a distance
Sari Sumdac
First time,I can't make sense why the sound bit steamer.
But,here well the sound sometimes same as steam loco because they are rod drive both.
For me I like the sound for nose suspention drive (I'm not sure the expression is right.
Yea,it's sound nostalgic‼️😊👍
Fascinating locomotive! I always liked its design.
When I was a kid I had a Marklin set - this is one of the locomotives that was in their catalog that I coveted.
There is one on display at National Rail Museum in New Delhi. This was one of the earliest and served the Mumbai (Bombay) area. Our previous generation saw it in action but we missed the show. Thanks for uploading it, at least I could get the idea of how it might have operated here in India
Super film of a truly unusual vehicle. Enjoyed it immensely.
We used to have larger versions of these on 1500V DC in India. Now as museum piece only as we have 25000 V AC traction.
Wow, even though it looks a bit old-fashioned but very powerful, it's probably one of the rarest in the world
Crocodile Loco, there are others Loco nickname, "centipede" and "shark"
And don't forget Alco's RSD-15 "Alligators"
Schön!! Danke sehr!
What a magnificent locomotive. Well maintained.
Nice!! I used to use this all the time on Trainz 12
i run a fleet of these on Transport Fever 2
Same here bro. I came from that Swiss campaign mission..
Cool video....nice work....like & sub from Romania....Thumbs up my friend
I felt my grandfather's spirit just watching the video.

*ONLY video I could find that didn't have stupid MUSIC playing over it or other trains running in front of it so you could not see it or hear it!*
Looks like the old Great Indian Peninsular railway moving around Bombay in the olden days. Maybe from the same stable
Wow, that's so unusual construction is like hybrid of steam and electrical locomotive on the down of electrification
Wunderschöne Lok. Sehr schön gefilmt. Super
Came from the Swiss mission in Transport Fever 2..
Krokodil zerr gut e-lok!!!
After playing Transport Fever 2, I've suddenly gotten a lot of train video recommendations. Love it! Trains are very interesting. In the game I'm using this Krokodil locomotive a lot. Pulls a lot of weight, although not very high top speed.
Small wheels equals more power but less speed. That's what you need in moutains chain
Good video, and a nice loc. Sorry for my bad English, because I am Dutch ;-)
WOW....Danke/Dank!!! Great share VERY much like the PRR L5's!! Electric locomotives driven by jack-shafts were at one time the only effective means of transmitting the power of the massive electric motors down to the wheels/road...very simple, very effective, and very smooth w far less "hammer-blow" effect on the rail than steamers. PRR DD1's were pretty much used right into the 30's when superceded by GG1's.
It looks like a marriage of the wheels of a pair of light 2-6-0 steam locomotives powered by two electric motors driving the wheels by jack-shafts.
The locomotive is not articulated, or it would be somewhat like a Beyer-Garratt.
It is in immaculate condition for a locomotive shortly to celebrate it's Centenary (if it hasn't already done so).
It is articulated. The two end sections can turn a few degrees relatively to the center section. Otherwise it would never have been able to pass the 360-degree tunnels on the Gotthard Line for which it was built. But it is magnificent indeed, including the humming sounds of the drive pinions 🤗
It’s not like England, nobody hanging out of the coaches talking pictures. Noisy old thing. Thanks for sharing.
No, they usually get out, but there is no platform on this track and there were several trains on the other tracks at the same time.
Superb locos !
I got a Swiss Crocodile Airfix (?) kit for xmas when I was a kid. I was still learning modelling skills at the age, and could not get the wheels to do a full turn. My father suggested that I make a better job of trimming the flash, and use less glue. It got destroyed one Guy Fawkes night when my patience expired :-(
European locomotives always look so elegant.
Estamos de acuerdo.
Indian Railways used DC run "Crocodiles" extensively for pulling of goods trains and pushing of passenger trains on up moving gradients. Occasionally, I believe, they were used on passenger trains too. As a child I have observed these beautiful beasts with intense curiosity and admiration.
Hallo Tim.

Greats from Germany
Sehr schönes Video!!!
....der Dampfloksound zu Anfang war passend!!!! 😄😄😄😄😄👍👍👍👍

This type of locomotive was used in my country India before few years.and it was called WCG1. It operated under 1500V DC on Central Railways. It was manufactured by English Electric and Vulcan Foundries. Today we have AC traction all over so this type of locomotive is only seen at railway museum.
Wasn't this mainly used for cargo?
