    Welcome to Season 4 of FTB Film Study! Expectations for new Penn State starting quarterback Drew Allar couldn't have been higher heading into the Nittany Lions season opener vs. West Virginia...and, somehow, the true sophomore exceeded those expectations. Coach Codutti takes us through the key throws in Allar's 325-yard, 3-TD opening act, showcasing the strides the young QB made from last season both mechanically and in his understanding of the game.

    I've been watching PSU games for a long time, that's the most complete gave I've seen from a Penn State QB.
    Coach, great breakdown as always.

    I had moderate expectations going into the game based on the limited sample size from limited snaps last year and the spring games the past couple years. In particular, the spring game this year he was quite inaccurate down the field, but Drew greatly exceeded my expectations in every way this game: decision-making, mechanics, accuracy, pocket awareness, etc. One thing that really stood out to me is that he was consistently throwing tight spirals. From what I can remember, he did not have a consistently tight spiral previously. Potentially a small sample size bias either in the base timeframe or this game, but hopefully it's a true improvement from improved mechanics.

    The pass game was so much more fluid, the route concepts seemed a bit deeper, Yurcich picked this guy for a reason, I LOVE how we didn’t even use the TE’s or RB’s. If we wanted to we could handed off 35 times to our boys and thrown play action to Te’s up the seem for HUGE plays but they wanted to show what Drew can do to scare DC’s and get him and the Wr’s in sync and confident and find a 3rd Wr to emerge which I honestly think it was McClain.

      @StephanJarmak 11 месяцев назад +1

      they also don't want to over work the runners early in the season if they don't have to. The more reps for drew the easier the game will be, also to get in sync with the WR's for sure

      I actually agree, I love that Yursich did the opposite of what everyone else thought he would!!! We know we have a good offensive line and running backs and tight ends, he let Drew loose and showed that our receivers are very good and talented and deep!!!! WE ARE 🏈 Unrivaled

      WVU’s oline was pretty solid, and their QB was very elusive. From what I could tell, it was a combination of that those two factors and rusty tackling from the defense. Most teams have tackling issues the first game of the season.

    • @StephanJarmak
      @StephanJarmak 11 месяцев назад

      they don't tackle in practice. They stopped that years ago@@RenegadeT1TO

    He looks like Kerry Collins type of quarterback to me!!! Even same size literally, except Drew Allar has more mobility than Kerry did, and if he can have a Kerry Collins type season, we are going to go very far Nittany nation!!!! WE ARE 🏈 Unrivaled

    A lot of people were critiquing that last throw because Cephas had to do some gymnastics to bring that thing down. To me, however, it looked like a good throw and Cephas just didn't get his head and body around quite quick enough. What's your take on that?

    • @ForTheBlogy
      @ForTheBlogy  11 месяцев назад +1

      Agreed. Throw was fine. I think if Cephas catches it cleanly he lands easily and scores. If you look at the replay the ball almost slides through his hands and he has to re-catch it twice...seems like all that unnecessary concentration and focus caused him to fall.

    For the Blogy. Now football is back.
    On that first touchdown, it looked like the corner stopped running with Lambert-Smith and ended up with the other two defenders covering Harrison Wallace III crossing underneath. The safety, Burks, tried to cover but, Lambert-Smith ran an out, away, to the boundary. Point is, wonder if Allar realized how close Burks was. Also, if Lambert-Smith should've worked back with Burks breaking in front of him.
    P.S. 8:14 Was that Olaivavega getting tossed?

    Coach Codutti what were your thoughts on PSUs run D vs WVU? Seemed like LBs were slow to their gap or didn't get to their gap at times similar to Michigan game last year. Wasn't nearly as bad but still some issues it seems. What are your thoughts?

    • @ForTheBlogy
      @ForTheBlogy  11 месяцев назад +2

      Chris...video editor here. In a weird scheduling quirk, Codutti's high school team played at 8pm Saturday (normally they play Friday nights, obviously) so he didn't get to see the full game...we just rushed him the Allar footage because we wanted to get this video out fast! btw, thanks for all your support since Day 1, man. Already plotting to do a run D film study post-illinois since Illinois executes one of the most diverse run schemes in college football
