Thank you so very much to all you gave a thumbs up. Many Greeks say that ' I am proud to be Greek' - I say 'I am honored and humbled to be born from Greek parents'. The ancient soil of Greece is sacred (was for our ancestors) and even though we might have not be born in Greece, the fact is that our parents, grandparents symbolically instilled in us that 'Olympic' Torch if you will -at least for me. Thank you so very much as it has touched my heart. Happy Easter to all Eastern Orthodox Christian that is coming up. OMG! almost one more month fasting - will we last? And best wishes to everyone of every culture and faith.

    As souvlaki gains popularity its worth noting that there are slight differences between regions in Greece. My kind of souvlaki (representative of Athens and the islands in central and east Aegean) follows a couple simple rules;
    - gyros as well as kalamakia (skewers) are made from pork or chicken, not lamb. While lamb is very popular in Greece it has no place in souvlakia
    - exception to the rule is the kebab which us made with minced lamb (similar to kofta kebab in Turkish). Not all souvlatsidika offer this.
    - we use the typical greek pita, thick and only briefly grilled; needs to be soft not crusty. No bread please, although this is popular in Northern Greece
    - inside the souvlaki you only need the following; thick tzatziki, thinly sliced onion, fresh tomatoes, cruncy fresh parsley, paprika, a little salt and pepper. You can have combinations of above depending on preferences although parsley should always be part of the mix. Potato chips are often added but its sub-par choice. They are usually served in takeaways or standing souvlatzidika where people do not want to hold a separate chips bag. When you are sitting down you almost always avoid ordering chips in the souvlaki. Why turn nice crispy chips in a lukewarm mash inside the souvlaki?
    - no lettuce, not feta, no mustard, no bizarre sauces -please!
    - you don’t open the souvlaki or take it apart. The magic of souvlaki is the juices from all the ingredients. Hold tight and bite, and try to resist licking the wrap paper in the end!
Souvlaki is a superb food, created out of necessity, making the most of cheap and widely available ingredients. There are variations, but the above represent the kind of souvlaki we grew up with in Athens.

Well that's not exactly Mediterranean diet to stay healthy with, with all those deep fried chips, fatty meat and a million carbs in it LOL
The traditional Med diet was actually very light, in old Greece all this meat and fat was more like the exception for a special occasion / celebration / family-get-together, for maybe once a week (if that). Really friggin tasty and absolutely recommended every now and then, but not for every day, it's still pretty rich food. Don't let the lettuce fool you :)

      @Kör Keşiş - Lee Sin
The only reason your comment seems to make a point - for the uneducated - is because some centuries ago, learning greek was forbidden through the ottoman empire.
As a consequence, many people used turkish words in their vocabulary, either because they never learned to speak proper greek, or because it was forbidden. So, here we are, foods that existed in greece for millenias, had to be named : Kebab, Doner, Yogurt etc. I mean we even had a turkish name for brother: KARDASH. WAS "BROTHER" DISCOVERED IN TURKEY FIRST?
Of course not.Had the fashist turkish dictators not been present, a greek would speak greek, a serbian would speak serbian and everyone in the balkans would have kept on their legacy.
But unfortunately, we had to use words like "Kebab", "Doner", "Yogurt" for foods that we knew long before the Turkish occupation.

Kebab and Baklava are persian words these cant be yours
May be Persians and turks cant get along because turks used so many persian and arabic words in the past
Yogurt is yoğurt and its came from turkic word yoğun [It means intense (intense milk u know what i mean)]
Turkish delight is turkish i dont wanna talk about it anymore (ure stealing the world "lokum" in turkish and sayin "lokumi" how funny is this shit)
Dolma is the word "filled" in turkish
Sarma is the word "winding" in turkish
Döner is the word "turning" in turkish
The roots of these words are turkish
Im sayin that cuz we can use same word ofc but
      For example "kardash" is turkish
      Can i prove it ?
      Yes
      How ?
This word came from "karındaş" which means "from same mother" in turkish and thats the proof
      I hope u understand
And also theres a northern cyprus turkic country you can go and see at anytime :)
      After all:
Theres a fact greeks are like christian cultured turks and turks are like muslim cultured greeks
I hope just food wars the only war between us in the future

@@GMFATW.24 Serbian was an offical language in Ottoman empire. And there was tons of Greek Christian schools in West Anatolia,İstanbul and Greece. Their name is Turkish because Turks invented them. So do not try to lie.

@@korkesis-leesin6021 You simply state words that are not greek, and I believe you. I agree with you that these words are not greek. 100%.
But the products were known for hundrends of years. Like yougurt for example. It means something in your language, while in greek language it simply corresponds to that fat creamy product of milk, without having a direct explanation for the object yougurt. I get what you mean.
BUT my point is that the Ottoman empire kept people under ignorance, like in medievial age. I'm not saying that such thing never happened anywhere else.
It surely happened in Europe, during the Dark Ages, the Medievial times. It even happens now, in the countries under Taliban occupation and ISIS occupation.
So, just like that, the dictatory nature of the ottoman empire imposed a low-to-zero level of education to anyone within its boundaries.
Propaganda, lies, dictatorship. Just like in Turkey nowadays. They put you in jail for nothing. Such was the case back then, and even worse! Apart from some important schools of the Nation, like the one in Fanari of Constantinople, where greek language and literature was taught with the permition of the palace, the people of Greece had forgotten their language and words. So, in order to communicate, they used words from the language that was widely used at that time: turkish. People in Greece and Serbia know this and have known this for many years. It is a known fact. What ever the turkish propaganda says.
So, to get to my final point: We had what you called yougurt, so many ages ago. Before uyghur turks come in the region, from the Xinjiang region of China.
We had it from ancient greece. It was called oxygala (οξύγαλα). It means something like sour milk, or acidic milk. So It is not a turkish invention.
Yougurt was present in Mesopotamia also, around 5000BC.Indians knew about it, (they had so many cows down there) and persians knew about it also.
When turks came, they imposed ignorance on people, so the people, after generations started to speak the only legitimate language on the land, which was the turkish language.
And they adopted the turkish words also.
