You can get this curry in most UK curry houses. When we did the phall challenge in Birmingham (1999), the waiter spent 5 minutes talking to us about it, then the chefs came out to make sure he wasn't taking the mickey. When it was served, the chefs came out again to watch us.
In our group of 8, four finished and my insane friend licked others plates clear.....just to prove a point. The morning was not fun.
Also, for the point of accuracy, vindaloo is a highly spiced curry which is also a little sweet and tangy and often somewhat dry, rather than saucy. Spiced doesn't mean spicy as such. It's a Goan dish, which is marinated in wine and because it's Goan, a place which enjoys spicy food, it is often deemed the spiciest of the traditional curries. However, it's a flavourful dish, so if you want spice heat, get a Naga.

Best phall I ever had was in Newcastle around 5 years ago. Spectacularly flavoursome and somehow hotter than the ones I had in the balti triangle. Mistakes were made the next morning however.

As a native of Bethnal Green, East London, Brick Lane was at the end of my street. I have eaten 1000s of Rubys (curries) and have got to know the owners of a few restaurant's very well. All have said the Indian, Pakistani and Bengali people very rarely eat dishes of madras, vindaloo and Phall heat. It's more about the flavour. 1/2 tsp of Kashmiri chilli powder and a couple of green chilies usually suffices.

I used to always order Vindaloo extra hot but now moved onto Phaal as my regular choice, to be honest it's not that bad. The heat is balanced to some extent against other flavours. The trick is to drink piping hot tea with the meal. If you do cold drinks or yoghurt you'll be there all day, because as soon as you swallow it the relief is gone, so you have to drink litres of milk or other cold stuff. Hot drinks reset the temperature pain receptors very very quickly. 2 cups of tea will neutralize a vindaloo, maybe 3 cups for a phaal.
