Back in the (late) 90's (or early 2000's, I forget), I went to a kickboxing gym owned by one of the early UFC champions (Maurice Smith) - and yeah, once he let everyone get in the ring with him for a few minutes. Needless to say, he spent my 2 minutes (lightly) kicking me in the exact same spot on my lead leg - and even with that, it was sore as heck afterwards, just due to his technique and momentum.

Something about the last clip is so incredibly beautiful. There is almost a childlike innocence to how happy you are sparing a guy like sanchai. The fact you are just having fun with him but at the same time on your toes. There is no ego or competitiveness. Just love for the art. Every time sanchai throws another feint or sets you up differently its like seing new colors you never saw before. This feeling that something is really special. Seing that irradiating smile while he makes banter with you almost as to say "see you get it". Your love for this sport and this journey culminated in that sparring session. Watching it was something special.

As someone who has embarked on the same exact journey of a long-term Karateka turned Nak Muay, this is such an invaluable insight into the lessons learned organically through the years of hard work on your part. I see so many components of your list and analytical breakdowns in my own sparring, which until this video I never really put much thought into but simply reacted to 'whatever works'. i.e. still utilising a long karate han zenkutso dachi style stance but a little more upright to deal with the threat of leg kicks by checking off the front leg, and opening up that back leg for the power muay thai roundhouse. I feel like I'm on the cusp of the same point you are - where I'm training to learn to deal with Muay Thai fighters using the tools I already have, rather than getting good at Muay Thai itself. It's been a point of insecurity for me for a while that no matter how hard I trained or tried, in the heat of a sparring session I reverted to my karate instincts and got my butt kicked (or more pointedly, my legs chopped down), no matter how much I trained and drilled a strict Muay Thai form. It's only recently that I've begun to find myself able to deal with things so much better when I stopped worrying about it, and found that naturally I arrived at this hybridized style like you. It's far from perfect, and a good Nak Muay will absolutely be able to pick it apart, but it's as you said a good enough point where I feel like I can begin playing around and having fun rather than worrying too much about the power kicks and head punches.
To sum up, thank you for everything you do with your videos. Other than just putting the rounds in, your videos are probably the best training and educational resources I could hope for. I look forward to keeping on top of your journey!

This comment summarizes my experience perfectly. I have no formal Muay Thai training but I have been sparring a lot lately in a more Muay Thai way and it’s cool to see how I use my karate background to form a weird mixed style. I’ve been looking for a good Muay Thai school and progress further into it. It’s great watching this video and reading this comment n seeing I’m not the only one who has come to a similar hybrid karate Muay Thai fighting style. The leg kicks and checks have been a huge mix up and fry my brain sometimes lol, working to make them as instinctual as some of my karate moves.

Hey Seth. I can't profess to being seasoned in either style as I only trained Shotokan for about a year, then much later trained Muay Thai for around 2. Even with my limited exposure to Karate, going into MT was a similar experience - the muscle memory and emphasis on "perfect technique" held me back for a while as Muay Thai seemed so "loose". However once I got past this, that duality you spoke of (the hardness of the stance and techniques contrasted with the "flow" of actual execution) was mind-blowing. I haven't been able to train for over a year but looking to start back as soon as I can, and watching this has definitely stoked the fire 😁

granted I don't have the black belt experience, nor any martial art experience prior. I recommend all tkd/karate guys to take up muay thai. It's too easy to deal with yalls attacks and they never spar either so they freak out when punches come at their face. The only time they're dangerous is at kicking range, which with muay thai, you can easily bring it close into punching range, switch to clinch, etc.
now the hybrid gyms, they're caught up to the meta, they're dangerous.

At some point i realized the first thing i needed was to get comfortable in the pocket and saw gaethje using the high guard with leg kicks to find his opponents in the pocket. I would purposely walk into range like that taking hits til i was able to do it fearlessly. I wonder what the most common method to getting comfortable in the pocket is

The sound that a Muay Thai boxer makes, saying "Oui" when it comes to sparing, is actually a signal. A signal that the opponent says he will kick or punch so that the sparring partner can prepare to defend so as not to get hurt. In another case, it is a warning sign that the partner is kicking and punching too hard and may cause injury before the actual fight, which is not a good thing for sparing. If my English is not good, I apologize. I tried to use Google Translate.

bro can switch stances mid fight, he goes from some muay thai shit to some crazy karate stuff, getting combo's by both stances would be wild

Fucking awesome end of the video! Nice that you had control and didn't hit him in the face for no reason. Kept it playful

Seth, do you think that karate offers a wider choice of kicks than Muay Thai? Which kicks do you think are the most powerful, fast, useful among all the kicks you learned from karate and muay thai? Could you do a video (maybe you already did) about the kicking aspects of these two disciplines?
I am not talking about what is better in street fights or what is better in a karate or muay thai competition, that would be silly, but just from the point of view of someone who is good at both things I would like to know your thoughts about the kicks.

    Dig your introspective videos.
Do you plan on ever visiting Thailand to train and watch live fights?
I am a fellow American that has been living and training in Thailand for 5 years now. Would love to show you around and do some friendly clinch sparring specifically because most western people simply aren't very good at it.
I will tell you that filming spar sessions is not a common practice, however, pad work on video is super common. I don't think it's bad etiquette, just not a thing a Thai people do over here often.
Regardless if you consider my offer,, you should come out here and really experience Muay Thai culture.

so muay thai is one of your staple martial arts that you train? what else? sumo? and maybe still karate? if you only had 3 martial arts that you could train for the rest of your life (and a bonus one for the 4th place because im curious. ;P ) what would you train?
for me it would be bjj for the ground game, judo for the standup (but rather the old less restricted style) and muay thai for the striking techniques. my 4th bonus martial art would be hema or something similar because having some knowledge about all types of weapons is a part of martial arts and fun, right?
    love your videos. :)

I always thought the "ooh-wee" was like the karate "ki-ya" or other Asian martial art scream/shout to help generate power in your strike. Glad to hear of another reason for that "ooh-wee"!

I know that pro wrestler Kevin Lloyd have trained in Muay Thai. As well as Japanese juijitsu, bjj, catch wrestling, and freestyle wrestling. And yes he had competed in bjj, catch wrestling, and freestyle wrestling. As well as a "pancrase" fight at Jigoku Grand Prix. Pancrase fight as in slapping rather than punching but using his Muay Thai training.

Our krav maga club has expanded a lot recently and we now also have boxing and kickboxing classes. Being a fencer myself the hardest thing for me is dealing with kicks. I'm not good at kicking despite having long legs and because I need to use my legs to check kicks now, my base and distance are all over the place, while my punches are decent, if nothing spectacular. It's interesting to see that your karate background gave you a leg up (heh) at kicking while your punches were shakier at first. The progress you've made is really interesting to see, and I hope that in a few years of training, I'll be much better at boxing and kickboxing as well. Your channel (and those of many of the other martial arts RUclipsrs) really were massive influences in my decision to expand krav into boxing and kickboxing as well. Keep up the great work!
