  • The True Story of Jessie James - Biopic loosely based on the last 18 years of Jesse James' life and focused on the relationship between brothers Jesse and Frank James.
The True Story of Jessie James (1957):
    Director: Nicholas Ray
Writers: Walter Newman (screenplay), Nunnally Johnson (earlier screenplay)
Stars: Robert Wagner, Jeffrey Hunter, Hope Lange
    Genre: Action, Biography, Drama
    Runtime: 1h 32min
    Country: USA
    Language: English
Filming Locations: 20th Century Fox Ranch, Malibu Creek State Park - 1925 Las Virgenes Road, Calabasas, California, USA
    Storyline:
The last eighteen years in the life of Jesse James, showing his home life in Missouri, his experiences with Quantrill's raiders, his career of banditry with his brother Frank and the Younger brothers, and his attempt to lead a peaceful life after the disastrous attempt to rob the bank at Northfield, Minn.
    Review:
While there is the legend and the truth about Jesse James and his gang, this film, in which the title strongly implies a truthful account, perpetuates the legend of a man who was of the people and who robbed banks that grew rich at their suffering. Is there truth to the legend, then? Google it and find out. The film itself is a solid piece of work from director Nicholas Ray, who, another poster has written, disowned it since the studio forced him to follow a familiar and hokey flashback style. However, even that works out OK, as the film starts with James's biggest failure, the notorious Northfield Minnesota bank robbery fiasco, which it revisits later on to show how the gang was trapped and picked off by strategically placed sharpshooters. The acting is not that great, a factor that seems to be related to the script, but the story itself moves along and has many good scenes from the flashbacks, especially when Jame's neighbor whips him with his belt, and when preacher John Carradine baptizes Jesse and girlfriend Hope Lange on the banks of a river. The film includes some interesting "facts" (?) about the Northfield raid, one of which, the Swedish townsperson wanting to buy one of the gang's horses, made it into Walter Hill's The Long Riders. And the Ford brothers' betrayal is very well done and seemed to have been copied in the Brad Pitt film. Frank Gorshin was an excellent choice to play one of the Ford's. The portrayal of the Fords of hanging around in the background, but present nonetheless, adds a lot for the viewer who knows this story already. As Jesse, Robert Wagner wasn't great, but definitely up to the task. Jesse James is a legend, no matter what the real truth is about him. Written by RanchoTuVu.

If I recall correctlyJim.& Cole tried to talk Bob out of going to Northfield with Jess n Frank.Only going along with it because Bob refused to back down.Later,he blamed himself for not listening to them & said had they not stayed with him after their injuries, they would not have been taken.Bob died in prison,Jim commited suicide after losing his sweetheart & being exiled in Minnesota after their parole.John was lost in '74.Cole & Frank lived till 1914 & 1915respectively.I believe Frank's son was in the First WW.I have a cd of music from the time, played on Jim's violin. Its lovely that it was restored.I don't know where it is though.Unfortunatly.Y have they brought imaginary riders into this movie? They were going to use another town but Jess thought he'd been recognized & they moved on to meet their karma. The James Boys,3 Youngers, Bill Chadwell who knew the area,Charlie Pitts...

The scene where Jesse and Frank ride their horses through the large window of the mercantile store during the Northfield raid was stock footage from the 1939 film Jesse James starring Tyrone Power as Jesse and Henry Fonda as Frank.

The best version of the James-Younger story is "The Long Riders" which uses the same family dynamics of the gang with actors...James and Stacey Keach as the James brothers. David, Keith and Robert Carradine play the Youngers. Dennis and Randy Quaid play the Millers and the Guest brothers portray Bob and Charlie Ford. The soundtrack is provided by Ry Cooder. More historically accurate than other attempts to tell the story.
