I'll turn 80, and I thought there might not be as many people who believed Joel McCrea to be an outstanding actor in westerns. I was wrong. This film is a fine example of the heyday of western film production. We're fortunate to have these platforms for seeing the older films. One of the few benefits of technical advancements in world much different than the America I grew up in.
I totally agree with your comment, I love the old westerns, I love the actors/actresses in those days, plus NO CGI and AI intelligence factors, just pure artistic talent and skills by the actors/actresses. I’m 75 and appreciate good movies with good stories and the emphasis on good acting skills. 👍❤️🙏🏼😇🥰
I love this movie, love all the old westerns, my family watched a lot of them together, this sure brings back many memories….HIGH 5….👍👍👍👍👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🙏🏼🥰😇
I can remember going to the local theater to watch western’s on Saturday’s as a kid back and in the 1960’s an 70’s . What a treat it was . All the boys had their cowboy hats on and handkerchief around their necks . The screen was so big , when the lights turned off it look almost like you were in the movie . Popcorn and a soda with a movie is always good for memories . Even in today’s world !!
I remember every small town had a movie theater. Once a year, in August, they gave away a bike. Every ticket was a chance for the bike. In the 60's there wasn't any cable or satellite TV. Every home had a TV antenna on the roof. We got three channels good and in the winter we could pick up two more channels from Pittsburgh, lol. Going to the movies at the Saturday matinee was a real treat. If kids today could only have such experiences
Very good western! Joe Mc Crea was a very good actor. Bob Steele seems to have been in just about every western movie. It was him or his twin brother. These movies make me smile! Thank you for posting!
Joel was a truly entertaining actor and seems to have been a good all around guy as well - someone who's characters one could reasonably aspire to emulate.
Really an excellent western film. I was born in 1959, ten years after the film was released. But I have seen only today nearly after 61 years. Yet it has the vigour to steal everyone's heart. Very nicely filmed in locations pleasing to the eyes. Such good do films will never return.
Love those ol time movies from the 40s and 50s.Best movies ever made were in that era. So much charm, personality, the actors the music. The time when a movie was a MOVIE.
i used to read comics from age of 12 and got hooked on westerns and until now watch daily ,,..the friendship they had was a unique bond and i love the endings
This is great. I saw the movie when it came out in 1949, and have always wanted to see it again. Every now and then, I would think of the three bells on the spurs. I have always liked Zachary Scott. Bob Steele was a good hombre years before this movie, but, turned into a bad one. I can't believe that I got to see it again. When I was in the army in 1957, Jody McCrea, Joel's son, was assigned the bunk next to mine, but, was gone the next day. He always played the big goof in the beach movies with Frankie Avalon. I almost knew a movie star.------June 23, 2019.
Jody was nothing like his Dad as an actor , even when he played in the biker movie , stilted and like as you said a goof to macho man Frankie, now there was casting. InJoels case he was excellent dating back to the 30s playing with the Dead End kids. His movies always enjoyable .
Excellent Western. I always enjoyed Joel McCrea's acting especially in his western films. The movie had a great Cast, Story, Director and a plus of a Max Steiner Music Score. Thanks for the upload. Out.
I was born in 1944 and saw westerns each Saturday. But, I don’t ever remember either of my parents talking about westerns or even going to see one. First time I have ever thought about this, and I am finding it rather odd.
When you have a 101% hero like Joel McCrea, cute Alexis Smith to look at and villainy in the capable hands of Victor Jory its clear we are in for a jolly 90 mins. I might add music by Max Steiner and photography by the legendary Karl Freund.
I'm 80 as well. And Joel McCrea is a favorite Actor. But like most Hollywood scripts. This one has absolutely nothing to do with reality. Historically or otherwise.
Thanks for the video very good movie I catch you western movie now and then on Turner Classic Movies on cable I seem to like them more and more as I get older for some reason and I liked all the actors that were in this movie
Alex Smith (June 8, 1921 - June 9, 1993) Canadian Actress-Movie/Broadway, Singer. Notable Broadway Career, Tony Award 1972. ...and she was truly a good vocalist. (Rouge) Dorothy Malone (January 29, 1924 - January 19, 2018) born Chicago. Popular among B Movie Films. Career growth, starred - "Peyton Place", and Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, "Written on the Wind". Confederate Gray - the only truly appealing "Gray", and I'm a born Chicago - Yankee. (Had to specify - no confusing me w/a NY Yankee! lol) GO CUBS - GO!!!!!!!!! 😉
Bette Davis once said before she died that movies today had too much reality and not enough fantasy. So when I watch westerns made during this era , I'm going to watch not for historical inaccuracies but because it's a western .
South of Saint Louis (1949) is an old western movie about confederate guerrilla fighting for enslavement during American civil war. Joel McCrea, the hero was the one of the best actor and horse back rider. Alexis Smith a Canadian lady was a beautiful gorgeous actress . Victor Jory is in powerful role of villain. St .Louis is the second largest city in Missouri, and sits on the western bank of the Mississippi River, which forms the state line between Illinois and Missouri.
The classic Western scene of entire saloon ( filled with armed men) going silent when the three guys walk in was parodied by MAD mag in it's classic spoof of westerns. " When anyone over 5'6" walks in thru the swing doors".
I'll turn 80, and I thought there might not be as many people who believed Joel McCrea to be an outstanding actor in westerns. I was wrong. You are absolutely correct, brilliant comment
Joel just played himself...thats what mage him great in westerns.

I’d say plenty did. He’s in the National Cowboy HOF for Western Performers in OKC. Joel was one of the best ever. A true good guy.
I love Joel McCrea ❤❤💜💜💜

I was 2 years old when this movie was produced. So it took me 70 years to get around to viewing it.
I think that I don't mind the waiting.
Me too . Born in San Antonio

What I like about classic age movie actresses is that they only wore about 4 ounces of makeup instead of the 2 pounds they wear today.
I was more then 2/3 of the way though this when I suddenly realized it's a reworking of 'The Roaring Twenties'
Except Scott turns good at the end
WHAT A GREAT SHOW. THANKS
