The Flaming Lips: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert

- The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit - stripped-down sets, an intimate setting - just a different space.
Bob Boilen | October 9, 2020
Wayne Coyne has appeared inside a bubble for over a decade. At concerts, he'd roll over the tops of adoring fans, their outstretched hands keeping him aloft. That was novelty long ago; now it seems prescient. For this Tiny Desk (home) concert, Wayne and his bandmates are seemingly quarantined from one another, with the bubble-sharing green-haired drummers and keyboards pairing off, playing together yet apart.
I don't think it's a stretch to say that going to a Flaming Lips concert stoned is a thing. The Flaming Lips have always embraced the surreal. Drugs are undoubtedly part of the culture, and on their new songs from American Head, drugs are at the core. These are songs for the lost, the overdosed dreamers, the damaged, the car crashed. On the album's opening track "Will You Return/When You Come Down" (which also begins this concert), Steven Drozd asks in falsetto, "Will you return? Will you come down?" while Wayne Coyne responds, "Thinking back to those lost souls / And their ghosts / Floating around your bed / Hear it said / Now all your friends are dead."
This visually enchanting Tiny Desk comes down to earth, with technical glitches that are fun to witness and keep it real.We hear old tunes sparking old memories, including "Be Free, A Way" from 2013's The Terror and "It's Summertime" from 2002's Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. It's a thoughtful treat from a band that keeps on giving.

i feel like the flaming lips would have done it this way regardless
They actually did something very similar over about 15 years ago.
Haha exactly what I was thinking.
couldn’t be more right
i feel that's why watching this is comforting. it's a 'normal' we are familiar with seeing
@@go-godollie2335 you and Andy nailed it. This is just The Flaming Lips in any setting, and it makes it feel like everything will be okay.
These guys really deserve to be recognized as one of the greatest bands. 3 decades of amazing music. Long live The Lips.
One of Greatest Alternative Bands ever. Almost 4 decades.
No one is truly great if they cannot SEE through the lies. So mask wearing is a dead giveaway of being anything but great. Ate up with lies, regardless of the musical content.
@@christopherlaskoski189 watch out everybody we have a crazed q-anon lunatic in this comment section.
@@gawdspeed They're just playing the game. Don't wanna get canceled!
You must be on serious drugs.
Honestly if you have never seen these guys live, put it on your bucket list, a true life affirming gig, what a band.
Completely agree!
Agreed. Saw them at the Showbox in Seattle in ‘99. We were all wearing headphones and they were broadcasting all the high frequencies normally lost in a live show to a radio station and then we were listening to that at the same time in the headphones. I think that was the setup? I just remember the whole experience being amazing. Extra special as I’m Australian and to see them over there in the states was rad!
And get as close to the stage as you possibly can
GET THERE EARLY!!!!!!!!!!!
EMOS, Austin TX 1994. Was on probation, stone cold sober but was still so high!
i've seen them twice here in mexico and they're basically my top 2 gigs ever.
One band that simultaneously makes you want to slunk into a depression and live for something. Keep it up boys.
Its very good funeral music by their own definition.
Amen, I think they're extremely Spiritual... u can HEAR THE GOD IN EM.... WOVEN
Even though they were sad, they rescued everyone.
That's definitely one way to ensure social distancing
This would also be completely normal for them without a pandemic haha. Love these guys!
Just discovered these guys🥺😭😭😭I enjoyed the entire performance 🙋🏾♀️😊
@@tcoker0416 Right, we have seen them in bubbles before - but how appropriate :)
Two people in one bubble aren't social distancing.
I was like - yeah... These are my guys. Totally reliably weird
The greatest photo I ever saw was a Google Streetview frame of Wayne Coyne chilling in a bathtub on his front lawn.

Lips, Please- please know that when you are working your craft and nobody is cheering, really everyone is cheering in this shared, spiritual place you have helped us create in our souls. We're with you at every crescendo and end of a song cheering and sometimes crying. You are never alone.
One time Wayne snuck me and my buddies into a show.
We stood next to each other and he was so focused on the playing. We both turned to each other and said something like "this is so good"
What a cool guy.
I've been this great band's concert in Seoul, It was about a decade ago.
It still on top of my "best of my life" memories list. It was happiest moment.
I hope I can go back to the day whenever I feel down.. like I light a cigarette.
I owe alot to this band
Then uou should really pay them back
I have an emotional attachment to this band.
real recognize real

He has the coolest hair. I hope I'm that cool when I'm his age.
same! they're all so cool
He’s a vampire and actually 2500 years a old.
Id say its between him and Tool's Adam Jones. Love his hair too! They have the same color, Wayne's is just curly.
Sweeney Todd
Like OMG I'm so younk too 😘
Wow, "Be Free A Way" is a great surprise. The Terror is so underrated.
Thank you Tiny Desk and The Flaming Lips. I needed this today.
The Flaming Lips saved the Roskilde Festival the year of the Pearl Jam incident. Everybody left the day after that happened, evening came, i was walking around the festival area, and those guys up there were doing their sound check and tuning their video thing. Last thing i remember was telling a friend to stay put and save us some elbow room while i went to fetch a drink, the entire concert that came next stands in memory as a dream .. a good dream, mind you, but don't ask me details. The whole bad mood of the festival went away for a while, thanks to them. So yeah, thank you to everybody involved in making that recording, maybe it can get us over another bad time. The soundtrack is magnificent, at least :)
Wonderful tale you have told, oh fellow human being I feel kindred too somehow! ;)
I'd love to see them play Roskilde again someday ❤️
💚 Oh how I miss live music. 💚
@@angelahall6598 Go out again as soon as you can!
@@thomasmacmanus9913 Absolutely! Dancing to music is the best way to be in the moment and connect with strangers. I found one event in July. It was definitely the highlight of my year. 💚
The dude with the acoustic guitar needs a bigger bubble.
And also needs to get rid of the mask because it's completely useless in his case.
@@StuartRochabrunt He'll have to come out of that bubble at some point.
XD
I don't wanna burst his bubble but your right
Are the bubbles not computer created?
Probably one of the most beautiful performances I've seen lately.
Flaming Lips can always be guaranteed to take something quirky and weird and turn it into something totally beautiful.
I feel like I should also be in a bubble to watch this.
For the last ten years I have seen the flaming lips play at least once a year, often more than that. It has been a hard year without Wayne walking over me in that bubble. I needed this bad. Thanks. I hope this doesn't mean they can't come back and do another live tiny desk at bob's desk.
Love the Daniel Johnston shirt!
Hi........hooooow rrrr U?
I clicked for the stage set up and ended up staying for the music. Thanks NPR for putting me on to these guys
✊🏾
Wayne and Jeff Goldblum have very similar speech patterns and I love it
the kernel of a Portlandia sketch
Not many can belt out a chorus that opens your heart with feel good joy. 🦋🙂
What can you expect from a group of guys that had the courage to make a cover of the whole 3r most sold album in history. Just amazing.
Been to quite a few Flaming Lips concerts back in the Yoshimi days and before. Loved those concerts! Great live band!
Such a sweet and happy sadness.
Perfect description. They capture something eminently human. And they don't complicate or condescend. Just honest.
man they did its summertime, my absolute favorite song from them
These guys are hilarious. Also very talented. Bubbles for all!
This Be Free a Way performance is so powerful
I discovered The Flaming Lips in 2000 at the Reading Music Festival. They BLEW MY MIND, and have plucked my heart strings to this day.
The performances and audio quality on this are amazingly good. I absolutely must go to a Flaming Lips show, once the plague has passed.
They're touring now!
I had a chance to see them just before the pandemic, September 2019 in London but… ironically, I was sick.
Drozd's arrangement style is so recognizable and inviting, provides the perfect backdrop for Wayne's lyrical styling. American Head is probably their best work in quite some time.
Personally I think it’s top three. Yoshimi, Bulletin and AH.
I’m actually a big fan of The Terror as well.
Steven's voice has long been the sugar to Wayne's salt.
@@NameLess-ks4fi don't forget Embryonic and Clouds Taste Metallic
@@NameLess-ks4fiI could never get into that one. Everything after Embryonic and before American Head is really muddled to me and more recording experiment than songwriting. But I respect whatever they choose to do. There is an undeniable trilogy of songwriting style in Soft Bulletin, Yoshimi, and American Head.
They throw the best concerts. I've never been to a better concert and will always go watch them live when they come to my town. Highly recommend you check them out when it's safe to do so again and they're touring!
Someone needs to put Wayne and Jeff Goldblum together in a room and film it.
They should your right
man, that´s... well.. wait... no.. that makes sense (hits like comment with disgust)
Yeah, I dunno why but this makes sense.
YES PLEASE
Thank you 😊 God bless you npr
I like his "Hi, how are you?" Shirt
"Hi, how are you?" is an Album by Daniel Johnston. He did a tiny desk concert as well...
That's neat I didn't know about the album. I recognize the design from his mural in Austin Tx
rip d.j.
the xylophone sounds magical on my cell phone speakers, the tone really stood out as authentic, not a keyboard. It hits the high frequency that almost hurts my ears
Had the same thought. Really couldn't tell if I was enjoying the sound or not.
Sounded good but really hurt my ears
xylophones have wooden keys, that there is a glockenspiel.
@@scottdoyle7697 I thought marimbas had wooden keys.
Dissonance. That harsh bit is a foil to the softness of the song
This band was the soundtrack of my formative years...I’m so happy that they are still doing what they do best. Only saw them live twice but hopefully I’ll see them again.
American Head is becoming one of my fav Lips records. Glad to seem them on tiny desk!
When he starts singing Its Summertime a wave of memories come flooding back. Ill never forget that summer of a younger me!
That opening .....man, gave me the chills.
Bahaaha
Amazing, soulful, timeless band. Effortlessly creative and always cool, but never too cool.
I want to see the next Presidential Debate like this 😂😂
I just love to see a debate be Presidential again.. Though putting one in a bubble until he runs out of oxygen does seem like a good idea.
@@curtisbme It'd be hard to tell he's turning blue under all that orange
That would be hilarious! The candidates just come out in plastic bubbles and just start charging at each other in a flaming circle surrounded by a moat.
Haunting album, one of the best of the year no doubt about it.
Wayne: Don't worry about oxygen level in here
Me: *I dont think that's oxygen*
Guess this is how Coachella 2021 will look like
I'd take it!
Top 5 of all time imo such quality and vivid music
Love to see these guys still being inventive after so many years. Interesting that the bubble is more fitting than ever today. Such a cool performance.
Tiny desk, thank you for years of showing me awesome bands I would have missed if not for yall! This flaming lips performance was just what I needed! I saw it right when I got home from a bad shift...tots made me happy!!! Thank you!!!💗💗💗
Seeing/hearing this makes me so happy today! Thank you ♥️🙏
I’m a late bloomer but I just became a flaming lips fan. What a beautiful performance
This is the only tiny desk concert I've ever watched live or even better made into an event. I've been listening to these guys for a few years.
Just what I needed after this week. A lovely performance from a lovely band. My night is now their new album.
This was one of the more captivating performances I've seen in a very long while. Thanks for the performance The Flaming Lips and thanks for hosting NPR! Loved it...
Beautiful band 😍
Wayne Coyne's voice ♥♥♥
Surprisingly it's pretty good here. Usually he's one of the worst vocalists on the planet live.
I met Wayne in the early 90's outside of a bar in Norman, OK. Flash forward, March of 1000 Flaming skeletons multiple years, brought in 2000 with them. They have been a major influence in my life. So glad they are still making music. Saw them in Tulsa with my sisters last year right before a big storm. Wayne is awesome in real life, just a good dude. I haven't had the pleasure of meeting Steven, but I hope to some day. Thank you for all that you do for music guys!
Coolest version of "Hi how are you" art on his shirt
another great concert memory
First time I heard them was their soundcheck at Bonnaroo 2008 I believe. They came on after my buddy and I left seeing the White Stripes at a larger stage. Got there, saw the fans and thought "OK this should be interesting." They did "War Pigs" as the sound check and I quickly realized I was about to see something special. Years later, Wayne stepped on my head (while in his bubble) at Jannus Landing in St. Pete, FL.
Man, I wish this was a real live performance. Would have be so cool.
How is this not real?
This is the greatest Tiny Desk gig. I don't even really know much about this band. But this is just an excellent vibe.
Do yourself a favor and listen to the soft bulletin and yoshimi. It’s like the Beatles: best to hear the full album.
@@jackstraw262they have very instananeously and abruptly become a fav band. I feel like I haven't really lived now I know them ...
dear mira see ya next year at a show!
Do you realize by them is one of the purest happysad songs ever made.
Beautiful down to the bubbles and hair! Thank you Flaming Lips and NPR!
This is simply jaw-droppingly amazing - especially the opening song.
I saw them live once I even touched Waine's hand through the bubble that he used to crowd surf. Back in the day as an insecure teen... well their show changed my life and I hope when the world is ready that they would do a concert in Hawaii.
This was moving to me,thank you all involved! It’s little stuff like this that gets me through the day and smile from ear to ear. Thanks again for
Thank you guys! We love you and are so grateful for your light and music
Thanks. I really appreciate your music. I’m happy to see the Lips on my favorite live public music forum. I have seen the Flaming Lips several times, and I thoroughly enjoyed it every single time. Probably my favorite band within this 38 years that I’ve lived. But this NPR tiny desk; I have seen some of the most wonderful executions of beautiful art, and I feel like this band has lived up to the highest standards. This is golden, just like so many things that NPR has captured. ❤️❤️❤️
We’ll see you guys next year? Don’t forget Utah. We love you here.
The Lips are one of the most creative bands out there. Always a great experience live. Hope to see them again
Amazing. Still one of my favorite bands after all these years!
I have been a loving fan of *THE FLAMING LIPS* since the 90s when I was a teenager learning to play guitar. Still love them. Great to see artists who are doing what they love.
I'm 35. These guys have been with me my whole life.
Saw this band 10 years ago and they absolutely blew my mind with their live show. I'm so glad I found them and that they're still a part of my life. The new album has been on a constant rotation this year and is exactly what I needed during trying times.
wow, that version of "Be Free, A Way" blew me away! great performance!
Sure didn't expect 'Be Free, a Way' stellar deep cut
Wonderful show. Iove this version of "be free, a way", just fantastic
se vienen a mi mente recuerdos del 1er Lollapalooza Chile 2011...congratulations Flaming Lips and thanks for your music
Flaming Lips always put on a kickass show ☆☆☆☆☆
New favorite album of theirs. "Mother I've Taken LSD" is my favorite song on the album
never was a big fan, but this blew me away. very good
Loved this wonderful group of music talent since late 90s and for someone reason this tiny desk concert as me reconnecting to my true self again
OMG! this is a very beautiful set list. This version of Be free, a way is sublime, i didn't expected at all, and it's summertime, there's no words for this amazing set list!
The Terror is one of my favorite albums, just a phenomenal record start to finish
This is such a ‘Flaming Lips’ thing to do, bringing fun and wonder to 2020, and man do we need it!! The album is great too!
Yes, it's just so much fun watching people fall for lies in 2020-2021. Yes. Just. So. Much. Fun. Keeping watching tv expecting anyone on there to have your best interests in mind.
Thanks for featuring them =) My fave Yoshimi and Waiting for Superman.
What a gift. Thank you.
Song 3- We picked this because it sounds like isolation....
Fantastic.
THANKYOU!!! Majestic set for this thyme 🙏🥦🦋🌳
Loved this so much!
Thanks for these concerts
I know we sometimes feel like more weirdness is not what the world needs right now, and I tend to agree. But The Flaming Lips and Wayne Coyne is a brand of weirdness that I find so calming and comforting. Its a brand of weirdness that helps in some way. I think the combination of their "weird" appearance/essence and their calming music makes you feel like even though this world in many ways so often seems so batsh*t crazy, its okay.
Never stop guys. Let your bands flag fly.
Always amazing, a big thank you to the Flaming Lips and Tiny Desk
So in love. That man’s insanity is brilliant. I can’t wait to be in a bubble at their next concert!
Wait, this is their FIRST TIME on the show?!?!?!!? They've deserved to be on it for so long. Makes me enjoy it all the more. Thanks to both of you guys.
great to hear Summertime.... love you guys
This so zeitgeist that we come back to it when we miss lockdown.
Best show you'll ever see.
BEAUTIFUL!!!!! This is a victory of the spirit. THIS is the flaming lips.
As always, outstanding, and outstandingly different.
I needed this today. So much.
Me and my friend went to a lot of classic shows from 2003-2012. They were very inspiring and beautiful
This is pure gold 💥 through pandemic dreams and bubble wraps, the genius persists
love this band , so creative and out of the box wish you can come to Toronto Wayne would love to see the band live again
