I did some repair/modification work for the boys, and that guitar came in for some work. We also worked on a puke green jazzmaster, and restored a vintage Hallmark Sweptwing 12 string that looked like it was on the Titanic. They were always bringing in Moogs and weird pedals. Always a pleasure to deal with. Just don't take off any tape.
The Guild guitar he was trying to recall to mind at the end is the Guild Polara S-100; it's like an SG, and it has significantly longer string length behind the bridge to the tailpiece, and the pickups are sometimes pretty microphonic, which, with the thin body, lends it well to controlled feedback and a more "open" sound as far as humbucker guitars go. Kim Thayil used them as his main guitars in Soundgarden.
It's funny hearing Steven talking about country songs people who haven't heard FL and might like some songs. Or his comment about the bubble shows being on morning news. You can tell hes still really proud of all the cool stuff him and the band get to do, and he wants people to hear his music. good energy! enthusiastic 30+ years on
I saw them live in DC about a month ago. They blew me away and Steven's live tone was amazing. So much so that i was googling what he used during the show. So this rig rundown is a real treat for me!
Steven has the neck pickup below the pickup ring to get more clarity. I set neck pickup on my Les Pauls the same way. I would say the biggest set up mistake people make on any guitar is setting the pickups too high. You get more output, but you’re sacrificing detail and harmonics. Lowering the pickup is like taking winds off the coil.
Such an awesome musician. I remember the FL as a crazy psychedelic punk rock band then I heard soft bulletin and the albums after and really came to appreciate Steve's musical abilities.
This was amazing to watch. And just about Steven's guitars... he is equally adept at keyboards, and is one of the best drummers ever. And can sing! Steven Drozd is truly a multi-instrumental, multi-disciplinary, musical genius.
What a humble guy. I forgot all about that bubble show they did when Covid hit. At the time I thought I didn't think that much of it for some reason, but seeing it three years later, I can appreciate what an amazing feat it was. As someone who is a guitar nut, it really baffled me that he nor the interviewer knew that his double neck clearly an Epiphone. I really wanted to know more about that Epiphone Les Paul Junior Special in the back there.
Dude!!!! Hes such a genius!!! He, Wayne and Michael!!! I LIVED to FEARLESS FREAKS for a year or 2!!!🤘🎸🤘🎸🤘🍻🍻🐒💚🧡💚🧡💚🤩🤩🤩 One if the most dynamic and raddest bands of ALL.TIME!!
I would note that all of Steven's guitars have bound necks. I agree completely with everything he said about the necks, love those fat frets and necks! Great video, one of the few guitarists I want to hear from about this subject. The Flips are so humble you just love them more.
I was super lucky to go to this show and the next night, Govt Mule. Nashville has its perks. I love that Rig Rundown gets filmed at the Ryman so frequently!
I must say I thought most of these sounds sounded like trash but I checked out their band and actually really dig it in context! They are are a cool band that I’d never heard of 😅
I have never seen more fun shows than flaming lips shows. They played a festival in Tulsa Oklahoma once and lied to the crowd that the mayor okayed the use of marijuana for this one song. Literally everyone who had some pulled it out and started smoking and passing it around. At first police tried to stop it but then realized it was a fruitless endeavor. If I remember correctly the major was actually on stage when he said it which made it even more funny.
Those early 90s MIK epiphones had “Gibson” embossed on the truss rod cover. I had an SG just like that as a kid. Still do (pulled all the frets off impulsively when I was 15 and I use it for slide now 😎). They have a scarf jointed neck and mine never broke despite many falls!
I have a 98' MIK ES335 DOT Epiphone that I Frankenstein'd with Grover tuners, Bigsby tremolo system, and hand wound custom pickups from a dude in Austin, TX. It sounds better than the 335's that were built in Nashville at that time for a 3rd of the price...😃
From what I can find on the internet that 12 string is a stock Epiphone maybe around late 90s early 2000 and likely not older than 2002 judging by the truss rod cover, bolt on neck, stop bar placement, and all 4 pickups having covers (there's other videos where you can see they had covers.) The truss rod cover plate use to say Gibson until around 2004. The 2003 models still said Gibson but they were slightly different in design.
I was wondering about that Jazzmaster ever since I watched the music video for "Bad Days" a few months ago where Wayne was playing it in the video. I couldn't figure out for the life of me what the bridge pickup was but now I know. I didn't even recognize the guitar at first until I saw the pickup. It looked rough back then but now it looks like a different guitar 😂
I like the parade of little old folks across the stage in the background. Probably Ryman tours. He might have scared the crap out of them with some of those sounds.
I had a chance to meet and talk with Steven Drozd In 2010...... HE WAS AMAMZING person talked for 10 mins,he told story about Stephen colbert. The subdecay liquid sunshine is more than "just an overdrive" it's one of the finest "more" pedals I've ever found, keeps your guitar feeling natural but gives it some hair on its chest and a tom selleck mustache. There are some models that can run 18v, hard to beat. Not compressed, just thick drive tone.
@@cjbcarr1 I've only heard my version which has the 24v cap inside allowing it to run 18v power, but at 9 volt I would not hesitate to use it as an always on, still - and I think any of the models probably sound very close. I would prefer it as a final stage between my other pedals and my amp, as a "more button" or an always on thing that glues my pedal sounds with the amp. It very naturally bonds your guitar and amp, it should not impart a lot of character other than some "bigger" sound, strong lows and mids, but not flabby loose lows. The brighter and grittier shades of the pedal create a nice sizzle but not harsh or fizzy. I hope that helps, definitely worth a shot and if using it earlier like a preamp or a middle of your chain gain stage i can't imagine it does anything bad, haha. It's been a long time but I recall feeling like the fulltone ocd set for lower gain and just a booster with a bit of drive and touch response - I got similar feeling from that but it's been years. The ocd gets a lot more aggressive, so I'm not trying to compare them except for the subtler "make bigger" tones I got from both. I also found that the clean preamp or whatever boost is in the Wilson effects haze vibe pedal, that's been a great always on clean stage where I can just have the level boost , but anytime I want the rate and width to start vibing it can do that. Odd choice here but had to mention it.
I use one as the last in my chain to attenuate my signal while getting edge of breakup gain at home and then crank the volume when playing live. It’s given me a consistent tone and gain structure thru a wide variety of amps, from small solid state to Tweed Bassman to Orange half stack. Love it.
who's gonna tell him that the original guitar wireless and in-ears will work alongside each other just fine, it's just his sound people don't know how to do it?
So neat when he started playing those funny Led Zeppelin riffs, actually it has always been great whenever they have played a Black Sabbath War Pigs cover during their live sets too.
@premierguitar Can you do a follow up on the green Jaguar which Ronald Jones used to play and has been with the band for decades. Along with JM, surely the other quintessential FL guitar. It looked like it was in the rack too!

Agreed!!! Love most, like all at least, but this is the best one in a while!!!😊
He’s one of my favorite drummers!
Wayne is exactly the type of dude to mess with someone else’s guitar without permission

Steven is an awesome musician , and seems like a great guy too.

This dude has written so many incredible tracks.
awesome!! I saw the Flaming Lips do the entire soft bulletin at Hollywood forever cemetery one of the best shows I've seen
Epiphone electrics had GIBSON on the truss rod cover from about 1989 - 2004. They stopped doing it when they moved production from Korea to China.
Yeah I was gonna say that. You can spot the Korean-made Epis at a glance just by the looking at the truss rod cover
My les paul is like this. Thanks for the info!
I'm on sg number 3 from that era, and logged in to say so too. not so many Epi's on rig rundown methinks
I saw them at The Troxy London last April for the complete Yoshimi album. They were amazing. One of the best shows I have ever seen.

Ronald Jones was absolutely out of this world with his playing and sound exploration. Steven’s a great musician, but Ronald was one of a kind.

The Guild they’re talking about is probably the S-100, Kim Thayil’s favorite model.
