    Former planktonic main here with a fun fact! You don't have to be microscopic to be plankton, you just have to be bad at swimming. (The word "plankton" even comes from the Greek word for "drift" or "wander.") For example, some jellies are considered plankton because - just like the tiny guys we usually think of as plankton - they can't swim against a current.
    Planktonic gameplay is pretty fun, honestly. It can be RNG-heavy because you don't really control where you're going, but it's a seriously unique meta if you're used to playing nekton.

    Carcinization is the process of Convergent evolution in which many previously non-crab crustaceans have evolved from different paths into the shape of a crab, implying that one of the most ideal forms a crustacean can take is that of the crab.
    It's such a meta pick that even other players end up choosing to spec into similar stat ranges and builds as the crab build itself.

    6:10 A very cool thing with the pistol shrimp’s projectile is that the centre of those bubbles reach absolutely insane temperatures and pressures because of how the pressure waves ricochet in the cavity. It’s so impressive that it’s inspired some human players to test the mechanic themselves as an exploit for pulling off cold fusion!

  • @tyler1107
    @tyler1107 4 месяца назад +381

    I think what makes crabs such a good build is that they are never bad. It doesn’t matter what the meta is, you can always crab. You can come back to the game after not playing for a decade, use the same exact build as you did before, and still be viable. Yeah, maybe it’ll be slightly better or slightly worse, but the fact that it’s _always_ viable is sort of insane. I think the only other builds like this are sharks and crocodiles, but those have significantly more skill required to play decently.

With a punch that can break through most shells, create a shockwave cavitation bubble on comtact, and briefly heat up the water around said bubble to temperatures nearly as hot as the surface of the sun, there's a reason sailors call them "the thumbsplitter." Mantis shrimps are so powerful that several human mains have actually added them to their parties purely to watch them be awesome. They require a lot of care as party members, but the morale boost is said to be well worth it. Then again, humans will add almost any player to their parties for the morale boost.

      @SomeGuy-gc8zs 4 месяца назад +42

      @@mimisezlol This is partially true; different party members provide different levels of morale buff or sometimes even a morale debuff depending on how exactly the human player has put their build together. Most human players get a huge boost from dogs, but if they took the arachnophobia trait then obviously a spider is going to make the morale situation worse, but some humans will get a buff from spiders and even a debuff from dogs. The human build's OPness is partially offset by an extremely high skill floor.

    • @mimisezlol
      @mimisezlol 4 месяца назад +11

      @@SomeGuy-gc8zs true, but even human build morale debuffs can be overcome; there's a morale passive for primate builds created after the patch that split Madagascar off of Africa that debuffs positive morale and buffs negative morale and damage output when interacting with serpent builds, as well as increasing ape detection resolution specifically when detecting them. Human players regularly manage to deactivate this passive and are able to add snake players to their parties for the morale buff instead.

    The Crayfish build deserves more credit. Though they may be incredibly weak in some aspects, this is simply because they are min-maxing. They have put all their stats into poison resistance, allowing them to survive places most other aquatic builds cannot. Some CF players simply dig incredibly deep burrows and only surface when it rains to collect supplies. A notable glitch utilized by some users allows for cloning of themselves without need of a mate, leading to server crashes and game bugs. Louisiana crayfish, signal crayfish and the marbled crayfish are particularly strong CF builds.

    A note about mantis shrimp builds. If you decide to run this build you’re going to need to pick a style of shrimp (spearer or boxer) and depending on what you pick you’ll essentially pigeonhole yourself into specific types of prey. For instance boxer mantis shrimps have to spend a considerable amount of time lining up the correct shot to crack shells, which is why they go for slower prey where as on the other side of things the spearer shrimp essentially walk around with a loaded crossbow and have to shoot from the hip the entire time at softer targets like small fish or other arthropods. Just some advice for players looking to tech into mantis shrimp builds

      Then there's Viruses, which are the closest things to being alive without actually being alive. Viruses are often confused with the three microbe factions: Bacteria, Archaea, and Protozoa. Viruses are actually a bonus "faction" consisting of modernized versions of the game’s pre-alpha characters and their variants. You can unlock each core virus build by either becoming infected by that specific build and surviving or (if you are playing as a microbe) killing that specific build in combat. After unlocking the base virus character, you can upgrade and diversify into its many variants. My personal favorite virus build is the Bacteriophage, which I unlocked after winning a really tough duel against a T4 while playing as an E coli bacterium. Afterwards, it was actually really fun to play as an anti-disease, and I was able to farm tons of XP from defending my human host. A really crazy friend of mine spent countless hours of playtime as a chimp for the sole purpose of unlocking the Ebola virus, the deadliest virus build in the game. He actually died from it three times before finally surviving an infection and thus unlocking the build. Its signature ability to induce the Hemorrhagic Fever status effect is so overpowered and will ensure a KO if your victim doesn’t have any health buffs such as access to medicine.

    You forgot one big advantage isopods have. Isopods are the only arthopods that can biphasic molt. Which means they can molt in halfs instead all at once which allows them to remain mobile while molting. Isopods also have extreme tollerance of ammonia gas and heavy metals. I say they should be C teir.

      Isopods belong in hell. As someone currently studying marine biology, I've learned a lot about parasitism, which itself is quite disturbingly fascinating, but nothing disturbs me greatly than isopods fusing to a fish's tongue. Having a parasite as my tongue... I'd rather become a zombie host for a parasite, by which there are some real fucked up stuff...

    We isopod mains took a few ques from the trilobite build plus we were one of the first classes to get the achievement land dweller.
    Plus since we’re so plentiful it means we’re doing something right.

      Plus, a lot of human mains(at least the ones that partner with reptile players) tend to also have isopods to round out the team comp. Sure, if you go down that route you kinda have to follow the whims of the human responsible for you, but hey, you've got a good supply of xp, are relatively safe, AND you can get some pretty neat skins

    the meme is less that players will drop their class in favor of switching to crab; it's moreso that many builds end up investing in the same upgrades that the crab meta is built on.

    I just like to say that Annelida, Onychophora, and Tardigrada are completely different phylums. Although the last 2 are more closely related than Annelida (the grandphylum Panarthropoda).

    • @bobbob-fr1jc
      @bobbob-fr1jc 4 месяца назад +9

      The fix for the phylogenetic tree would be changing arthropod to ecdysozoa, change annelid into nematode (since annelids are lophotrochozoans), and then show arthropods as a part of panarthropoda which you mentioned contained tardigrades and onychophorans.
      As far as im aware, the lower part of the tree is also messed up. This is because trilobites and chelicerates lack mandibles, while crustaceans, hexapods, and myriapods all belong to mandibulata, while the tree he shows indicates loss of mandibles on the brach with those 2

      @elrobot3123 4 месяца назад +2

      Yeah I'm glad someone noticed that, being that he placed the annelids in "Arthropoda", that "Arthropoda" probably refers to "Articulata", although that taxon is obsolete and as mentioned it would be best to put Ecdysozoa but without the annelids. Oh and the trilobites with chelicerates (Arachnomorpha) is also controversial, according to what I read it may be valid but not 100%, because there is another hypothesis that puts them with the mandibulates forming Antennulata.
