Hopefully I explain this clearly. You're struggling to control it because your drive motor is spinning the same way as the tines this makes it so the machine is constantly jumping and pulling away from you as you struggle with all your might to hold it back. There is a setting or a lever to rotate the tines in reverse so the tines are spinning counter to your drive wheels. You want counter-rotating tines as you break ground and make your first couple passes, then once the soil is loosened you can switch back to forward rotating. Then you would be able to handle it a lot better, even not being very big. That a rear wheel tiller which is a great design. Stick with it.

This was the best. When you’re daughter comes out in her purse and fancy shoes, then tells you the old man was twice you’re age 🤣 When you’re tilling and at one point to a two footed jump to follow the machine, the when you’re finally done and you turn it off and look at the camera. I was laughing so hard, but in a good way!!! How fun. Good on you for doing it. Makes you feel alive. Excited to see your garden this year.

My 1st tiller was a Gibson which lasted 15 years. That tiller was a real beast; every nurse in my hospital borrowed it too. Then I decided to get a 2nd tiller, a Ryobi which was cheap but also lasted 5+ years. Finally, after killing my back & 🙌 struggling to pull that cord, I got my most recent Mantis tiller. BUT I GOT AN ELECTRIC ⚡️ MODEL & I’m thrilled.
Yea, you need to have a 100ft+ power cord & must be mindful to avoid running it over, but my back & hands are HAPPY!
No more struggling to get it started NOR to make sure the oil is changed etc. I’ll only get electric from here on as long as the Lord lets this old lady garden 🪴 & live on this 🌏. God Bless you my dear, you’re so smart, dedicated & SO VERY INTERESTING.

You probably should enrich the soil with compost... I'm sure there's plenty of manure from the farmers in the area you could get. Also, learning how to control the tiller is important. The main advice I have is let it do the work

It is still a gem. If you were closer i would buy it.
You need someone to give you driver lessons on using it.
    That is my dream machine.

Where to start?????,,,,, First off I'm a grown man and that thing is a beast.... Second, seeing your sheer determination and desire is inspiring! Your willingness to sacrifice to "Makeitmake" should be an inspiration to all of us!!!! and also yes I believe that little lever in front is a choke for the beast 🙂 had you lifted up on the handlebars while the tillers were turning, you could have controlled the beast much easier, for next time when you want to make the garden bigger 🙃

I had an old tiller and mine was a weak governor spring. Not sure if yours is the same or not. But got to give credit to how sturdy they use to make them. And you definitely gave it your all. Proud that you even tried. ❤💪👍

You tamed the beast long enough to get the job done. You're not too late for planting. I'm in Berks County PA, and I just put in a few things yesterday, and tomatoes won't go in for another week and a half. I was feeling so pressured to get plants in, then noticed the farms around me are just getting tilled, and they should know.
    Good work!

Hey 'Makeitmake' you've got this. You will not be beaten. Well done. With the clay soil, you can over time add organic matter to make lighter. But, clay soil does actually hold on to nutrients too, which is a good thing. Although, it will take a little long to warm up at the beginning of the growing season, so covering it will help. ❤

My mom and dad had that same tiller when I was growing up. It did fluff the soil, there was nothing better than walking in the freshly tilled soil.

The soil will all be good! My whole garden is red clay and it’s thriving! I planted everything in mine and it’s all came up! I tilled in some 10-10-10 before planting anything and let it rest a few days before I planted. Then when I planted I put a little handful of chicken manure pellets into the holes and stirred it into the bottom soil. Since then I have side dresses my corn and potatoes and hilled everything needing hilled. I wish I could share a picture of mine in here but it won’t let me. But be brave and go for it-plant it and ask Jesus to bless it all! God bless! Leslie-Alabama

That "thing," looks like the carburetor choke. Not related to the clutch. Close the choke to restrict air for starting the engine. Once the engine is at operating temperature, open the choke. Also, try disengaging the tiller when turning for a smooth turn and till lengthwise, back and forth instead of spiraling to the center. That method is much easier. Probably a job better suited for your Husband with that particular machine 👍

Good for you, Leilani, you got it started. You're not a quitter! There's a throttle, that thing you showed that moves, and I think that part regulates how much gumption it can give, so if that thingy moves, it could shut off the machine. Im not expert, oh no I'm not. Youll get the hang of it. I have faith in you!
    Good job!

Beautiful job! Amend the clay with a couple of bags of in ground. Ealmart has large bags for under 5$. Use cardboard, paper and straw to bring the worms and hold in moisture and deter weeds. ❤❤❤ Edit: its helpful to use a pitch fork to aerate that clay when working bags if inground soil.

That thing is a beast! And my husband had a hard time with our tiller too. We do both in ground and straw bales. They don’t require tilling and product is great. You can try that along with your in ground. Then put the composted bales in the ground. Bales have to be conditioned … it’s a process but worth it for me/us. Good luck

I'd suggest adding a few bags of a well draining soil and maybe some sand to that clay side to give things a chance of growing on that side whether you just top dress it or work it in. My parents have clay in their back yard, which is just a natural thing, not something you did, and it took about 25 years just to get grass there. The fact you had grass is one step up! 😂

Those tillers have an atomic shut off for safety reasons. Since you keep tiling it too far up while pushing. It is shutting off. Also the weight is there to help you keep the blades in the ground while keeping forward momentum.
Tip, it is easier to go in straight lines instead of circles like that.
Hood job though and here's hoping you a good garden!

My 83yo mother in law has the same tiller she bought new in the late 60s. She knows how to run it too.
Your problem here is that you don't have enough experience on it. You are tough enough to do it. You just need more practice. Also those old machines like to warm up a bit more before a load is put on them. Also learn how to reverse your tine rotation so it doesn't run away from you.
Also that thing you think is part of the clutch is the choke.
Get that 83yo guy to show you how all the controls work before he dies on you.
