@@philv3941 Hi Chaps, again, 3.59 states the system does require Human Intervention to place the bag charge on the bag charge loading tray. So Assisted Load. Watch videos of it in action paying attention to the Left Hand side crew. See Archer for fully automatic. Pete
@@peterfeeney721 hi pete, even in the archer, a human pre load the loader ! In the full auto version of the caesar, once the boxes are charged, you can stay IN the vehicle for all the rounds , no human intervention is required at all.
you just place the howitzer and it's loaded makes a lot of sense meaning you can prep your rounds and don't have to go through the arduous process of fitting and reloading
the fact it s not a full loading system is that your projectiles need to be chosen according to your goals / targets. It means they are not all the same projectiles (it s not like for a gun) Otherwise you will need different projectiles inside 'magazines' and a system that could select the good one, and maybe reswith again, to treat a different target. etc ... = means more heavier , more complex and more ... expensive. And not faster in the end. So very limited gain.
Too much automation, it's very bad. First of all, weapons should be simple and reliable so that they can be repaired as quickly as possible. And then any failure and the whole system will break down, and there is no way to charge manually. Funny.
Everything has a price in term of cost, maintenance and weight. I think it is great as it is. Fully automated systems are more likely to break down because of more parts which also complicate logistics and even worst increase the overall weight the system. The greatest strength of this system is its lightweight meaning it can strategically be deployed by air unlike heavier system like the Archer. As it is right now, it's near perfect, although I think a less armoured but much lighter version would also be desirable. I reckon they need to always deploy it with a couple lightly armoured vehicles armed with anti-air capabilities against drones.
@@TemplarX2 The Caesar 1 can be transported by plane as it weighs only 17,7 tons, wheareas the Caesar 2 weighs 30 tons, which is the weight of the swedish Archer.
Interesting system. They need to completely automate the ammo handling, so both projectiles and charges can get from the side storage to the autoloading mechanism without having the crew do it manually. This way the crew can stay in the armored can, and the crew can be reduced. Having the crew outside the cab to fire the gun is the main weak point of this system.
This is a matter of comprise. The 6x6 variant of the Caesar had to fit inside C-130. This 8x8 Caesar still fit inside A400M. A fully automated system would be heavier and bulkier, would most likely not fit inside A400M 😉 For high intensity conflicts it would survive by changing of firing position.
And the semi auto loading is perfect, once the on board shells are used firing can continue nonstop from a supply truck. Loading up magazines may stop firing for many minutes. The whole system is setup for speed. (Speed is the key strength)
Sweden went for full automation with the Archer. The problem is, it's heavier, more expensive to buy and maintain. In the end, this is just an artillery system. What matters is cost + range/accuracy + mobility + ease of use. It isn't an arm race to make the most complicated system.
@@Bvic3 What's the cost to recruit, pay, house, feed, and provide medical care (including potentially in combat) for four additional crew over the life of the weapon system? What's the risk of having them outside of the armored cab of the vehicle exposed to counterbattery fire?
🤔On retrouve les obus de 155 dans DONETSK 🧐 au milieu des quartiers civils , sa change les civils de la routine et des mortiers . Je suis sûr que les citoyens de Donetsk apprécié .🥴
It's not a front system. It's a hit & run system. When the shell are at the target, the whole group is already in movement. It's pretty different from towed/WW2 artillery.
They normally got escort/security units following them. And as said. It is fast. A trained crew, should be able to fire, 1 minute after the driver has stop the vehicle, in the fire position.
@@heinedenmark What happens if two staff members are injured and are unable to charge or shoot? Cesar then becomes unusable In Archer, a person can do everything protected from charging the target cannon to shoot and drive
@@heinedenmark 23 sec from when Archer has stopped, the first shot comes and after a minute they have fired three shots and left. By then, Cesar is already knocked out and Cesar's staff is dead
Very good plateform, but not as versatile and cannot be air-transported. And sales talk for themselves. The Ceasar is a bestseller and 8 countries already have purchased it when the Archer system never reached any export market
Is heavy and complex. Ceasar has seen combat in Afghanistan, Iraq, Mali, in Thailand. Overcomplex system with limited crew to maintain them and no access to fully equiped workshop is a recipe for quick breakdown.
Archer is not artillery on a lorry. It is a terrain vehicle. I dont think the complexity is a problem. You just replace the entire module. But ceasar is cheaper and moves easily on roads.
6 rounds in 2 minutes? Or dear...our crews on the FH70 could fire 8 in one minute (ah, misheared, so its 6 rounds in one minute...better, but still inferior)
Compare an obsolete cannon (1970...) with this Caesar... you can shoot all the rounds you want, Caesar will shoot longer and with the best accuracy, one shot will be enough.
@FUCK SHIT Sorry nope.... Seen the thingies with the danes. Hydraulic pumps are to weak to bring down/raise the spades and rise/lower the barrel at the same time...setting up the gun and more important LEAVING the firing position needs roughly a minute. Not good enough for today battle field.... Meaniwhile REAL self propelled guns can reach/leave a firing position within seconds...some can even shoot simply from a short halt. And they have their crew under armour the whole time
not realy, Maginot was heawy armored fixed forts who fire relative small caliber fast fire small/medium distance canons (75mm), and the Caesar is extremly mobile, light armored large caliber long range high accuracy canon...
France is the country in the world who won the most of battles. Check and you will that that it is true. America escape from VietNam, Afganistan and dropped 2 nuclear bombs to civilians.
Very expensive state of the art artillery system with zero protection for the crew against mortar explosions or bomburst from enemy artillery. I still prefer the latest G-6 system from Denel Armscor of South Africa. Unfortunately Denel is currently a pie in the sky busy to fall down without a parashute.
@@Homoprimatesapiens in a modern combat setting, encapsulated artillery gun is almost obsolete given that every artillery encampment will be targeted by cruise missiles and air raid. The only thing that will really protect artillery group is the air superiority, not armor.

@@skepticalbadger Do you realize the range of potential enemies artillery? And any potential enemy is a threat to the crew, that is as elementary as it comes. Artillery is a weapon of war. War has multiple threats, even in asymmetric warfare. Hopefully you just didn't think before you commented, because, damn.
@@brianjordan2192 you do realize most artillery like M777 offer no protection. This has Stanag 3 cabin to protect crew while in transit and you completely fail to understand that this type of artillery is shoot and scoot so will be far away from zone before enemy can counter. Another key aspect of this system is being air transportable by c130 (6x6) or A400 (8x8) which you cannot do with heavy armored tracked vehicles. History has shown that Caeser is quite effective as seen in Yemen, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Lybia, Sahel.
@@lordtemplar9274 You do realize that all plans go out the window as soon as contact is made with the enemy right? With drones, satellites, and other recon assets, it's likely that counter battery fire could precede these guns firing. The M-777 is irrelevant, these pieces were to replace M-109 pieces. And the major threat is peer on peer now days, not counter terrorism. Air mobility is irrelevant in such a scenario, because of long range air defense, and enemy aircraft. These guns, and your thinking, are intended for the wrong conflicts. Maybe you should look at relevant history, instead of recent history.
@@brianjordan2192 please stop with the pedantic diatribe. There will be no peer to peer conflict between nuclear armed superpowers. Just open a history book and read about the Cold War. If such a war did happen then artillery would be meaningless and it would be game over for all involved. However proxy wars are very much a reality as seen in Yemen, Ukraine, etc... Yemen is actually a very good example of what the existing and future threat is -> a proxy war, with Saudi led coaltion armed with western tech vs Houtis armed with drones, rockets, etc... by Iran (helped by Russia and China). Yemen is hardly a minor counter terrorist exercise like you portray. So instead of your armchair theories about modern warfare, Caesar has performed as advertised in real modern day combat. In fact Caeser type artillery system has proven so effective that most militaries have them, getting them or developping them (that includes US, Russia and China)

@@rolandbihot7944 Hi mate, understood. But a solution is to load pre prepared charges in support of a fire mission. Or to have the charge autoloader separate to to shell autoloader? Respectfully, Pete
In fact it is Peter, but the vid doesn't show the full automatic loader, but the semi-auto version. In the full version the lateral boxes are different. Check Here, at 3mn, the guy explain how the full autoloader works :

@@rolandbihot7944 et si on fait un tir direct?
the fact it s not a full loading system is that your projectiles need to be chosen according to your goals / targets.
It means they are not all the same projectiles (it s not like for a gun)
Otherwise you will need different projectiles inside 'magazines' and a system that could select the good one, and maybe reswith again, to treat a different target. etc ... = means more heavier , more complex and more ... expensive.
And not faster in the end.
So very limited gain.
Archer nr 1. ...............caesar
On its way to Ukraine.
Too much automation, it's very bad. First of all, weapons should be simple and reliable so that they can be repaired as quickly as possible. And then any failure and the whole system will break down, and there is no way to charge manually. Funny.
Same Serbia. System takes only 3...lol...

So when will come the totally automatic loaded gun? So nobody needs to be outside the vehicle? Inventors, start thinking....
Exactly
Actualy CZ Army has this, old but with autoloader. Funy is that we buy this shit instead of upgrade our older system and we make step back. :-)
@@janbielik9272 ... decisions like that, in countries outside EU it`s called "corruption of high-ranking politicians"!
Because of the maintenance
@@janbielik9272 no its better because the czech army doesnt have the money for à lot of fully automated autoloader
It still needs to be more automatized. Why are so many people still needed ?
A fully automated system would be heavier and bulkier, would most likely not fit inside A400M 😉
For high intensity conflicts it would survive by changing of firing position.
@@JoJo-vm8vk And cost && maintenance issue.

It's not a front system.
It's a hit & run system.
When the shell are at the target, the whole group is already in movement.
It's pretty different from towed/WW2 artillery.
They normally got escort/security units following them. And as said. It is fast. A trained crew, should be able to fire, 1 minute after the driver has stop the vehicle, in the fire position.

Archer BAE System ..

6 shots in 1 minute only ! made in Normandy it's thoug ! 😉
They should've named it the "Maginot".🤣
surely because it can resist the air bombardements
not realy, Maginot was heawy armored fixed forts who fire relative small caliber fast fire small/medium distance canons (75mm), and the Caesar is extremly mobile, light armored large caliber long range high accuracy canon...
The Caesar is the gun. Clients choose the truck and how much armor they want.
@@dufonrafal But they still have to operate it outside the vehicle. Its not like an encapsuled fighting vehicle such as a battle tank.

LMAO. Its not designed to withstand incoming artillery strikes, WTF. You are supposed to shoot and relocate. Even a tank will not help you vs incoming artillery strikes
Absolutely no protection for the crew. History says, that's a bad idea.
You do realise the range of this thing? Who is threatening the crew?
@@skepticalbadger
Do you realize the range of potential enemies artillery?
@@lordtemplar9274
You do realize that all plans go out the window as soon as contact is made with the enemy right?
Cesar is slow and you can still charge with the help of staff who are out which is a danger to the staff. In Sweden, we laugh at Denmark who chose to buy something that the M109 is much better at
