      If you want to be able to send this into editing without needing correction, a few diopters will make a big difference. I expect I’ll keep a +1/2 and +1 in the kit. If they made a Rangefinder/Rectilux-type variable diopter in this size, we could completely solve the mumps problem.
      If you’re shooting low budget anamorphic docu or events, then you’re probably on a Sirui already. I see the Great Joy as targeting the narrative productions that won’t pay for Vazen/Atlas. This also will probably make the SLR Magic Anamorphot 1.33x PL lenses less relevant, especially if the GJ 35mm and 85mm come out on time and with similar performance.

    Anamorphic mumps is a problem that existed with Chretien's first Hypergonars and, to a lesser degree, B&L's CinemaScope lenses. Whoever is developing these new lenses needs to study Panavision's anamorphics, which eliminated the problem. There's no point reinventing the wheel.

    @LucasPfaff 2 года назад +1

    Someone on the Facebook group mentioned there's no varying squeeze and no mumps. Was it Mathieu? Can't look for it. Or were it the 1.5x ones from Venus...?
    Anyway, a bit of a bummer. But I must admit I'm not down with the T2.9 trend, it's pretty much one stop too slow for me. Flares, hm, reduced and if they come up not very nice (at least no green, maybe Sirui can take notes)
    See, I know it's pedantic. The price is hot and what they deliver is good. Maybe more lenses follow (would be awful if not; I also hope they are not only aiming for FF), so a rather cheap anamorphic set is manageable.
    But it's still a lot of dough. And for what it costs, it just doesn't tick enough boxes. And nothing to work around the "issues". It hurts to say

    • @AnamorphicOnABudget
      @AnamorphicOnABudget  2 года назад +2

      I agree on all the notes. I haven't started watching the reviews yet to see who might've said that. The ones from Laowa are pretty clean (video coming next week). T2.9 is kind of lame overall, and I'm having a hard time understanding the trend.
      I think we're starting to see the beginning of a road which will take a few years to develop where we'll have a good array of affordable anamorphics to choose from and tick the boxes we want ticked. So far this one is my favorite of the new wave of cheap scopes, but who knows what the future brings? :)

      I think it's price/performance, ultimately. So much more glass means bulk and money. But yeah, bit of a bummer.
      Keen to see the Laowa. That I think of it I kinda believe I heard no mumps about that one (and I think it was a sales rep from them who spammed teaser-adverts on the group... yeah that might be it, if memory serves me right). 1.5x is kinda lame in its own regard and I recall the flares were hideous but well... you win some, you lose some, but ultimately right now you don't gain some, haha

The bokeh character isn't blowing my mind, but it is surprisingly more attractive than the slight "smearing" I see from the $8000 Vazen 50mm 1.8x. Also seems to have significantly less CA than the Sirui in this video. I feel like any complaints I might have can be corrected in post -- something I do regularly with the Kowa anyway. Anyway, I am pre-order #60 for a PL + Amber version as of this morning. Looking forward to playing with it and adding the other focal lengths later this year.

    Thank you! This is an exciting time for filmmakers. I'm waiting for Great-Joy to complete the lens set (35 mm, 50 mm, 85 mm, I think) and then will get the full set. That would also give some time for the lenses to be out in the field, and learn of any other quirks that show up. Plus having one single anamorphic isn't very useful for my style of work, since it can get a bit jarring cutting between Spherical and Anamorphic glass.
    For me, the EF/PL mount is the single greatest advantage over the Sirui, and I prefer the subtle flares of this one over the Sirui's "wilder flares". The Laowa Super-35 anamorphics are also coming soon, and those might be an interesting option for pairing with BMPCC 6K, Red Komodo or Canon C70 style cameras

    I just got my Geat Joy 50mm Yesterday. I have been playing with it all day and I love it. As someone who has used Panavision C,E & G series as well as Arri master anamorphics - all I can say is WOW! I love the bokehs, as they pop up so easily and turns every specular hit into an oval bokeh. Flares are little hard to get, I agree. But Arri anamorphics give zero flares due to their coating. I also think it is better this way. No one wants to look like JJ Abrams and too many lares in a movie can give one headaches. Plus, we can always fit flare filters we used on Arri lenses. I did not see any distortion to faces on my footage. Thy were perfect. I assume your problem is due to PL mount. Great Joy and GH5 turned every shot I took into a cinema work. I love it! Beats the crap out of Sirui which I can hardly call anamorphic. I was hesitant to back the project up but I am so glad I did, I am flying. Can't wait for them to bring out new lenses so I can own a full set.

    I would think that with the protruding rear elements on the EF it would only work when there is no mirror to flip up, like dedicated cinema cameras such as The Reds or Canon’s C line. I’m thinking that with something like the Canon 5D series you would have to mount and remove with the mirror flipped up, or else it would smash into the lens.

      Your reply makes sense. I guess I was hoping that the animation at the very beginning would clear this. I see more people filming with cameras without mirrors and using speedboosters than the other way around, so I thought that would be a more common issue. But you are correct. The mirror will hit the back of the lens if it's not up.

    Hey Tito,
    I'd have a question regarding the anamorphic adapter Great Joy offers. I have a set if SLR Magic Microprimes for Sony E which have 82mm filter threads. The adapter takes lenses with 67mm filter threads, so my thought is if it would be possible to put on a 82-67mm step down ring on a Microprime and attach the adapter to it? I really did the look of the Microprimes and could imagine that this might work with longer focal lenghts like the 50mm/75mm ... maybe 35mm? Any experience here? Thanks a lot!
    EDIT: I just found something really interesting. Cinegearpro is selling thread adapters (72/77/82mm) especially for the Great Joy anamorphic adapter and they are even made by Great Joy itself. They aren't listed on Great Joy's website, but they are obviously made for exactly my desired purpose. Good thing with these is that they replace the original 67mm thread of the adapter, so that little gap caused by a regular step-down ring would be gone. Weird I haven't heard of that thread adapter before from Great Joy directly.

      @@AnamorphicOnABudget Alright, so I received the lens adapter + thread adapter yesterday, my findings with the Sony A7S III (=full frame image circle).
      SLR Magic Microprimes:
      - 18mm/21mm: forget it.
      - 35mm: pretty much useless. Vignettes, gotta crop in to get rid of the vignette which makes it pretty much just as wide as without the adapter.
      - 50mm: vignettes too, but useable.
      - 75mm: no vignette at all. A bit soft though.
      Tried it on my Tamron 28-75 F/2.8 G1 as well which was kinda interesting, somewhat useable between 45-75mm with a bit of cropping. Funny thing is, that you can actually use the autofocus when you set the adapter`s focus ring to a roughly correct distance. Also tried it with my Sigma 24-70 F/2.8 which was useless (heavy vignetting).
      Gave it a try on my Sirui APS-C anamorphics as well, same conlusions as yours. However, will probaby not use it with the Siruis too much given that the 1.8 squeeze isn't too great combined with 16:9 sensors. For sure a great option for 4:3 sensors or everything not as wide as Sony's 16:9.
      Overall ... well, quite nice if you want to get cheap anamorphic options in the 45-80mm range. However, not perfect for Sony.

    Looks amazing!
    Do you have exact measurements of the protrusion of the rear element? Trying to figure out if it could go on an EVA-1 which has integrated IR and ND filters (although it would mainly go on a S1, it would be nice to have the option to put it on a cinema body). They seem relatively slim but still.
    Wooden Camera states that any lens with more than 33.5mm of protrusion from the PL flange would not be compatible with a PL-modified EVA-1. The distance from the sensor to the rear element should not change between EF and PL mounts so a measurement of the PL version would give the compatibility of the EF version also.
    Thanks for your work!

    This is a really tough one for me. The MFT choice is so tempting to work with my GH Cameras. I am a blue flare an oval bokeh fan so this particular lens scores low. I am puzzled as to what made you like this lens? The price is great, but I have the standard Sirui set and will likely upgrade to the Mars set for my “A” camera. 1.8 squeeze would be nice but absent a full set of focal lengths it would be more novelty than working tool. I will probably pass on this lens and perhaps be kicking myself later.
