    Great Joy introduces a wide anamorphic to go with their full frame 50mm. This wild 35mm has the horizontal field of view of a 22mm spherical lens, while delivering that good anamorphic look. How wide is too wide?

    really loving what you said about playing to its strengths. about to shoot a project with this on a drama/fantasy short where the fantasy aspects aren't really in the forefront. I'm picking this lens because of that subtlety, that slightly elevated feeling of not necessarily being in the 'real' world that anamorphic creates yet it is still grounded as it is absent of typical anamorphic aberrations. it leaves us in a nice little grey area that is perfect for this specific project. great review on everything and it made me feel even more confident that this is the right lens for the project!

    You mentioning "Lack of character" in this anamorphic lens reminded me why I desperately wanna slap a SIRUI 1.25x Anamorphic Adapter on a Canon FD lens or a Helios 44. Just throw em on anitque lenses that already have alot of character to em.

    • @angryrabbitproductions1690

      There is more to the “anamorphic” look than the stretch. I”ve used 1.33x adapters that look way more “anamorphic” than these lenses. Also Atlas’s Mercury line blow these lenses out of the water and they are only 1.5x.

    • @LucasPfaff
      @LucasPfaff 2 года назад

      Flarefilters leave nasty looking bokeh and making good(!) Flares in post is not entirely hassle free either, and can take a lot of time. Distorting the image around is easy and fast of course. I'd rather have an interesting lens from the start than making trying to fix it later, the bokeh is nice if you can get it (and you won't make the lens faster in post either), and that's about it :(

    Something nobody seems to be bringing up about the mirrorless mounts and the fundraiser price is that the mirrorless mounts are about THREE HUNDRED DOLLARS CHEAPER. My indiegogo price was $1189, and that difference is pretty valuable to me. That being said, great video as always!!

    • @AnamorphicChannel
      @AnamorphicChannel  2 года назад +4

      I feel the mirrorless mounts are very limiting. A PL lens will work ANYWHERE, while an e-mount will only work on Sony, and so on.

      @@AnamorphicChannel That's an extremely good point, and VERY good advice, but it's still something people should be aware of in order to make a fully informed decision with regards to their specific situation and needs. That's a savings of roughly $600 dollars if someone had bought both the 50mm and 35mm in mirrorless, which is not nothing.

  • @Veptis
    @Veptis 2 года назад +1

    So, I believe I have asked this before:
    But isn't there a way to get "the 2x look" but only something like a 1.5x squeeze? If you combine a front element as well as a vertical rear element? Of is that just medium format with extra steps and would give you a massive and heavy lens?
    It's awesome to see the amount of 'budget' options we have nowadays, although nothing that perfectly fits what I believe I want.

  • @vaidehiarts
    @vaidehiarts 2 года назад

    Thanks Tito! I feel that as a set the Great Joy makes a lot of sense, perhaps with a 85 mm down the line next year. Do you think adding a good streak filter to this lens would help with the character? Or would that look unnatural/distracting? I really prefer the non-flare style of this lens, but it might be nice to have some of the flare going on for certain projects

And I need bokeh - the sole reason I would buy anamorphic. I can easily do establishing shots with sperical as it usualy doesn't have bokeh either way

    “Too much in focus”? Sound a lot like when other influencers mention that a lens doesn’t have “enough flare”… what is this world coming to?

    • @AnamorphicChannel
      @AnamorphicChannel  2 года назад +1

      It's coming to people not knowing the words for what they mean. I also didn't wanna get technical.
      "Too much in focus" in this case means there's not a lot of separation between subject and background after a certain distance. The distinction between a sharp and a blurry point becomes hard to distinguish. The size of the circle of confusion at that point, is too small, but not small enough to be "in focus", which creates a video-like feeling.
      It's like how some lenses are designed so there's a sharp transition between in-focus and out-of-focus areas, but backwards here.

      @@AnamorphicChannel Makes sense. That is a good explanation & thanks for taking the time. Sort of like line-scan lenses that go from 100cm to infinty extremely fast - good for some applications but not all. Lets see if I need to sell my lenses as I am going through Great sadness.

    • @Trevellian

      Agree. They need to make a version with actual flare. Not overwhelming flare, but at least some flare. In a perfect world, one version blue, the other orange.

    • @friedom

      I would agree, but I'm holding out that there will be some character to it. A lot of the sample footage I have seen so far has been quite nice, and I personally like using promist filters from Tiffen, which I'm hoping will tame the sharpness. I'm also curious to know if the image produced can enhance the 'character' of the lens with the new Sirui 1.25x adapter.

    Overpriced and less than impressive IMHO.
    The obvious vignetting is disturbing.

    • @AnamorphicChannel
      @AnamorphicChannel  2 года назад +2

      The vignetting comes from me using a variable ND filter to control exposure. The lens is so wide that you'll start getting vignette from adding an 82mm filter. If I had used a mattebox + ND filters on trays, I'd have no vignetting.
