(most scale recreations based on medieval artifacts end up under 100lbs draw weight) 200 is a super uncommon heavy longbow/warbow, and is why he is doing heavy longbow training to push himself further. Even after over a decade of training his way up the bow strength tiers. (He started when he was 14) He is actually on par with the current world record holding longbowman who claimed the record Mark Stretton of the UK. The bows found on the Mary Rose were found to have an average draw weight that is estimated to be 160lbs @ 30 inches of draw. The spread of draw weights from the bows was between 100-185 lbs @ 30 inches. I personally doubt that anyone in the medieval time period, was drawing a 200lb bow on the field. Ever. I think the 185 and any heavier bows, were used just as Joe Gibbs is demonstrating here: A training bow. A bow to help you build strength and capability, to be able to use a ~160 lb bow, effectively, in battle.

And even the lighter-drawing 160 lbf bow requires a draw energy about equivalent to a .32 ACP pistol round. These bows are serious performers, especially in the hands of Joe Gibbs.

To avoid injures to elbow ( Joe Gibs has his bow hand elbow BANDAGED ALREADY!) and joints i would not take more that MY_WEIGHT/2 = 112 lbs bow. So with an appropriate training i can shoot it 4-6 days/week for at least 200 arrows daily.

Obviously not with resistance bands, but do you think that they naturally would have understood the need to be limber so they wouldn't pull a muscle in battle? Or would they have just shot through the pain in the heat of battle? Is there even any evidence of something like that or no?

Hey Joe! I've been having a look at Shadiversity's videos about knocking the arrow on the right side of the bow. I'm sure you're aware of the bickering online now on wether or not warbow archers knocked on the left or the right. My technique for pulling is very similar to yours, and with a 165lbs bow, there is no way I can balance the arrow on the right, but maybe I'm also not training like the did back then.
My own take on this is that people would knock the arrow on whatever side they felt natural, and that in the experience of the people I know who pull actual heavy warbows (not just 80-110lbs) knocking on the right is way more tricky and an unnescesary handicap. You have any thoughts on this? As one of the few people being able to draw 200lbs and above, I think your opinion on the matter is rather relevant.

So, do you every switch side occasionally? I know some track runners occasionally run the opposite way on track training in order to even things out. Only during off season, but still. Even track training will put different strain on your legs when turning and it will eventually make a difference due to assymetric stresses during training.
This should make a much bigger impact. So do you ever switch side to even things out?

I'm doing these vids to try and get the average of bow weights up. Its been increasing slowly for the past 10 years. But it would be good to get more people shooting 150lbs. The last 5 years has seen a few more people shooting over 140 lbs. So theres maybe about 5 in England who can shoot this weight all day. Thanks joe

I ment some would have been able to handle bows of 200lbs but in a battle situation you would want a bow that was comfortable. So in battle bows of 130-170lbs. If I was going in to battle I would take a 150@30. Comfortable and fast. Cheers mate.

Hey Joe, do you ever happen to do dumbbell rows? If you do, do you happen to know your max and If not than what sets, reps and weight? I'm more dedicated to lifting but I've been into archery since my young teenage years and while I've never even seen a bow that heavy, I could draw a 100lbs bowtech like nothing when a guy at the club brought one in, although when I took off my release and finger shot it... That was a lot harder haha. Still, I'm curious as to how quickly I could get to the point where I could draw the 200 pounder a couple times since my body is pretty much built to pull. Maybe if I ever go on a safari I'll start working my way up to the big boys but until then I'll stick with my measly 80# compound. Anyways this is impressive as all hell mate, thanks for sharing.
