  • HERE I SHOW HOW MY LEFT SHOULDER IS BIGGER THAN THE RIGHT, YET THE RIGHT BACK IS BIGGER THAN THE LEFT SIDE. MEDIEVAL ARCHERS WERE SOMETIMES SAID TO LOOK LIKE HUNCH BACKS THERE BACK MUSCLES WERE SO BIG.

    During the raising of King Henry VIII`s (8`s) flagship, a number of skeletons were brought up from the deep which were found to be unsymmetrical, that is, the right side was considerably larger than the left side. Also found were a great many English Longbows and thousands of arrows. Due to the conditions where they were found it was realised that the wood was perfectly preserved. Following conservation treatment, some of the bows were tested on a draw-machine. They were found to still have a draw weight of up to 180LBS.
    It was realised then that the deformed skeletons were those of the archers themselves. Their deformities were created by repeated back-tension or scapula motion drawing of the bows. The technique was all but lost with the rise of gun use but is the preferred method of bow draw among serious archers today. You could say that the original bow-draw method has been rediscovered. Love ya style dude.

      I don't think the technique was lost, however no one drew as heavy of bows as the English archers, excluding crossbows, but it's arguable that they don't count. I think warbows have been 75-100+lbs, as a general rule. Hunting bows: 50-80 lbs is typical, legal minimum in most US states is 35-40, though in AZ it's 30. The strongest hunting bow I've heard of is 100lb with Pope and Young, but I don't see why a warbow couldn't hunt). There are distance bows which can use both feet to draw bows 200+lbs; record distance is abt 2000yd. And as for target bows, it can be as little as 20lbs (25m and shorter) and as much as 54lb, I think.

    This is an excellent, and likely unique, lesson that is incredibly valuable for archers.
    Those lines in the muscle tissue are called “striations” by bodybuilders. They are a strong indication of muscle maturity.

    After a decade, I have seen quite a bit of changes, I've been slowly reducing weight as of late (from 80, 70, 55, and now 45) as I'm realising it makes no real difference anymore as I'm not going after big game or armored targets.
    I started at 14 and at my peak, I was shooting "warbow" which, changed my fingers, forearms, shoulders, etc (stopped after an injury).
    I shoot to relax, I shoot for fun, for the zen of it.

    Hi Gary, if I'm practising on my own, and I draw and shoot 6 times right handed, I like to draw and let down 6 times left handed. It might not be important, but I like to keep my strength in balance as much as possible. Same with work - I shovel and rake right hand back and left hand back, carry stuff on left shoulder then right shoulder etc. :)

      You're spot on man, I play drums and am a carpenter too and so naturally started doing everything as a kid carpenter with both sides. Workmates thought I was a nut hammering and drilling all the time with both hands. These days a lot of new guys are into it too cos it balances the body and there's a lot less chance for repetitive strain injuries from overuse of one side.

    Much respect, archer to archer, thank you for making this video! Inspiring us to keep on shooting as we're all gettin' older every day!
    I sometimes try shooting with my off-hand to balance out the muscular tension... of course I can't hit anything using my off-hand so I have to stand really close to target, but it is a fun experiment, try it folks! It's like using a sword with my left hand, I feel like a clumsy newbie fool but it also makes me pay closer attention to what I'm doing and I'm feeling all the different muscles engaging that aren't used to it.

    So i'm a natural bodybuilder and aim for symmetry in my physique. seeing this kinda imbalance (although it's miniscule and doesn't matter to most people) would scare me but my left front Delt needs a little work so i'm lucky I picked up archery a few weeks ago.
    That being said, I build my own bow from carbon and PVC (I like starting off humble and cheap) at 60inches and its just about 50lb draw weight and i've had many sessions shooting for over 1 hour or 2 and still have no soreness or fatigue issues from it. If anyone else reads this comment i strongly suggest you start doing wide grip pullups and narrow stance pushups with elevated feet to hit all the right muscle groups for archery.
    If you're already hitting the gym though, folks. good on you! work your grip strength too!

      Manny, great comment! Not sure if you are implying you grip the bow tightly with your last advice. If you deathgrip your bow, have you tried the lightest featheriest touch with your bow hand? Kinda amazing... Go team!

    • @davidherron9151
      @davidherron9151 6 лет назад

      it would make no difference in fact its likely you have imbalances more substantial already depending on whether you are left or right handed.
      for example lets say you were doing a dumb bell shoulder press with 40 kg dumb bells I imagine one of your arms will need less help from a spotter than the other as you reach the end of a difficult set.
      its not normal to be exactly the same on both sides unless you deliberately held off the superior side.
      Which ultimately would set you back as you would then not be able to bridge such obstacles found with dumbbells by using a bar.
      I used to be a body builder and I recall going to a little archery shop and asking to draw the 90 lbs long bows cause I was seeing them on yotube and so on.
      The people at the shop were natural archers that did not work out and made the presumption I could not do it correctly.
      But of course you and I know a 90lb draw with a push and pull is not a challange of you are fairly advanced in the gym

    • @InqWiper
      @InqWiper 6 лет назад +1

      I have never been shooting actively and my left shoulder is higher than my right. Not being perfectly symmetrical is not uncommon. Maybe this guy even had a higher left shoulder before he started archery but never noticed because the difference was not that big. The difference is bigger for me than for him and I don't shoot.

    • @LuKe31197
      @LuKe31197 6 лет назад

      An excellent way that I like to avoid sports related imbalances is to replicate the movement at the gym. For drawing a bow back I will use a cable or resistance band, replicate the movement as best as I can and of course do an even amount of sets and reps on both sides. I find people do not give enough attention to their less worked side in circumstances like this because they may not see the results immediately transfer over to their activity.

  • @nontimebomala2267

    Tell you something else, an archer has a left jab that will make put his opponent on the ground every time. I grew up with a bow in my hands. I'm left handed but I shoot a bow right handed. By the time I was 16 I could draw a hundred pound bow and I could hit with my left like a man that weighed twice as much as me.

    I never really thought about this. That would explain the disproportionate mass between my arms despite lifting weights the same on both sides. I wonder if it would cause any issues with my spine
