    Great to see that bow draw weight used with well practiced skill. Uour Yew from Switzerland source provided some great staves to work with, high density to reach 183 @ 28"
    I live in the Philippines and got a Tamarind stave and Holly stave.
    The Holly is still drying but the Tamarind gave me a 135@28" warbow.
    I used Holly before and im going to try for a 160 & 180 warbow from that log.
    Ever made a Holly warbow Joe?
    Ascham mentioned it as a mean military bow wood.
    Keep up the good work.
    I made yew longbows and a warbow for the Hunter Castle Pele Tower in Scotland at Hunterston.
    What string do you use on the heavy bow?
    I only use Linen natural fiber strings. After a draw weight of 150, the string diameters start getting to be almost 3/16." In the 180-220 pound bow range, natural fiber strings come close to 1/4" diameter. This makes me think the hemp or flax fiber they had was a stronger grade or the limit of that material for a 1/8" string was a 150 -160 warbow, defining the likits based on the arrow nocks measured from those found on the MR. I never saw that topic examed before.

      It's not actually a Target, it's a nylon woven backstop net designed to catch arrows that miss an archery boss/butt(usually straw or nowdays often foam). The target is the paper printed card pinned to the boss/butt. Joe is just shooting onto the net to stop his arrows.
      The net needs to be hanging loose enough to slowly stop each arrow or they'll got straight through. As he says, he's using big blunts to avoid that. I've had a 27-30lb bow shoot an arrow straight through my net when I'd hung/stretched it too tightly. Fortunately there was just an empy field behind, though I never found that arrow.

    Joe what are your thoughts on how heavy was the longbows back in their day, cannot find any draw weights recorded. The mary rose bows, some people say no more 80 to 100 lbs others say up to 150 lbs.
    I´ve found Pip Bickerstaffe`s book "The Medieval Warbow A Bowyers Thoughts" very informative especially his research on the notchs sizes of the arrows from the mary rose and the string size that would fit onto these arrows, also some of the reports about the battle of Crecy and of Agincourt have got me leaning that the longbow was probably no more than 90 lbs draw weight. (which is still a hefty weight)
    I do historical european martial arts, I teach the English back sword system of George Silver but have been an avid longbow shooter for some years now and i do find it frustrating that their seems to be zilch about the draw weights of their longbows as i would like to be using a weight that is historically correct.
    Your thought or any information you´ve acquired would be greatly appreciated.

      Shaun I have been to the Mary rose and handled the bows many times. And made a lot of bows that fit the dimensions of the mary rose longbows. I believe that the bows are from as light as 100lbs right up to 180 ish lbs. I have made string of hemp and linen which fit the nock sizes of the arrows from the mary rose that work fine on 180lbs bows. Best strings are made from hemp.

      @@jon4715 Very hard to say. All trees have many parameters that affect it's growth and the climate has changed since the little ice age. Any sample of 400 year old yew is degraded to the point that it's mechanical properties are not testable and any structural analysis has a wide margin of error as humidity and temperature variations to rot and even natural background radiation can and will affect structure in enough time.The fact that modern replicas with similar dimensions perform as expected should imply that modern wood is as good as back then.

    Joe nice bow, isnt performance less after about 160# or is that just myth? It doesnt really make sense to me because with a longbow the ration from mass to power is more then a flatbow, making heavier draweights have less diminishing returns.

    • @psiera4332
      @psiera4332 6 лет назад +7

      Blake Gundry true if your using light arrows due to air resistance and so forth- how ever you need those drawweights if you want to use heavier arrows for armour penetration - where they will achieve similar velocities as lighter arrows but with greater dropoff- i.e Thier won't be much difference in speed/ energy when firing a light arrow from a 120lbs or 160lbs now but their will be for the heavier arrows- particularly at short range- you need that for armour penetration. Most modern arrows are only 400 grains, the ones they've found from medieval period were around 1200-1500 grains.

    Very impressive I have to admit. However, the arrow seems slow. It seems like a bow this weight is actually performing less. Granted I don’t know the arrow weight but I would see no reason to weight an arrow down so much that it would travelled slow. I would think a well built horse bow at around 70 pounds would be about the best performing bow you could have. Especially when you get into these crazy sinew backed horn bows that are just out of this world. The native Americans of some plains tribes built horn bows that would pass through a buffalo and kill her calf running on the other side. The Koreans probably build the finest horn bows ever.

    • @dragoscoco2173
      @dragoscoco2173 4 года назад +1

      Those are around 1000 grain arrows right there. A light arrow does not take enough energy out of the bow-arrow spring system, especially with a heavy weighted limb bow such as that log.

    • @survivalguyfyi5718
      @survivalguyfyi5718 4 года назад

      Dragos Coco 1000 grains is insane. That would explain it. I think a lighter grain by at least half in a bow around 60 lbs would perform better at hunting distances but this that bow with 1000 grains would probably be more effective at volley. 200-300 yards. That takes years and years to pull a bow like that.

    • @konjotin
      @konjotin 4 года назад

      You can watch the video with Tod's workshop where they test the armour penetration cababilities of a longbow, he shoots real arrows with a 160lbs bow, and they travel fast. Here the camera angle might make it seem slower than it is (also the blunts might affect speed).

    • @johnbarron4265
      @johnbarron4265 3 года назад +1

      These arrows are actually likely traveling north of 200 feet per second the instant they leave the bow. The reason they appear so slow is that they have wooden blunt tips, which create a LOT of extra aerodynamic drag on the arrow. So it slows down VERY quickly, probably several feet per second for every yard traveled. So there is a noticeable amount of speed loss even over a relatively short distance. And the time of flight out to 20 yards might be similar to a bullet tipped arrow traveling, say, 150 ft/sec.

      a wood bow's limbs are only able to go so fast even with no arrow on the string. if a 50 lb bow will launch a 500 gn arrow 200 fps doesn't mean a 150 lb will launch the same arrow at 600. even if you could should super light arrows without the bow breaking the arrow will only go a little bit faster while you're leaving most of that energy from the high draw weight in the bow, wasted.
      to get energy from from the bow you have to put a load on the string that slows the limbs down. the higher the load the more energy the arrow will take out of the bow. basically you want to make the arrow as heavy as you can while maintaining acceptable speed. especially when you're shooting at armour clad targets.
