A must to survive in the OSR is the Reaction table. Not everything in the World is out to kill the characters. Love the hand drawn maps.
I appreciate that. Thank you for the advice. I’m working on some reaction tables for part 2. Learning along the way.
Your new player excitement and the obvious smile in your voice is infectious. I love that energy - the first games we played (so many years ago) are the ones we still remember. Not knowing the rules and the limits (if any) really adds to the fun. Good luck in your journey!
Thank you so much ☺️!!!! I agree not knowing the rules/limitations definitely adds fun from my experiences. I’m really enjoying my journey with TTRPG’s. I feel like I’ve found a space where I can let my creativity just soar and explore which I really appreciate.
It's fascinating to see a different approach to playing TTRPG. I'm the type to let the dice, oracle and random tables build my world when I play solo. But I dig making your own assets and setting for you to play in your own sandbox. Please continue the series onwards!
Thank you ☺️. I play mostly using and oracle/random tables. I was just trying something different this time around.
This is a great video! I love the passion. Very infectious. And what a cool world. 😊
I really appreciate it!!! That’s means a lot!!!! ☺️☺️
I just discovered your channel. It’s so great! I just started playing RPGs in the last year. Yes Runecairn and Runecairn Wardensaga are both great editions. Also Old School Essentials, Knave and Dolmenwood are great when I’m not playing 5e.
Thank you so much!!! & welcome to the super awesome world of RPG’s. Runecairn, Knave, & old school essentials are on my list to check out soon.
Everything about this is great! I really like your approach to the game and to building this world. This is definitely a GM gym.
Also the comment about this town not being a vacation spot was hilarious!
Thank you so much ☺️!!!!!!! I love doing these videos. I have a lot of fun doing them and I have been learning so much. It’s really cool, I found a hobby where my artistry can really expand/grow beyond anything I’ve done in the past. On top of that the TTRPG community is super supportive 🥹 which I appreciate so much!!!
Welcome to the RPG rabbit-hole. As an OG DnD player/DM it’s great to see new folk jumping in and I have to say your attitude, energy, creativity and overall vibe is amazing and infectious. We need many more DM’s like you in hobby. You come off as a very natural story teller. Looking forward to what/where your channel goes.
p.s. Killer penmanship. 😉
Thank you so much for the really kind words/compliments ☺️ I feel like I have found my place, my community within TTRPG’s. A place where me as an artist all the way around can expand within my artistry/creativity. I’m really loving & appreciating the journey. I hope lol that makes sense.
Phew! That town's infested 😅 Or maybe it's a wildlife sanctuary with a gnome warden desperately trying to keep these aggressive hero types in check 😆🤔
Lol 😂 as I thought about it, I’m thinking to incorporate something into the story that explains the lack of people in the town at the moment.
@@LegendsDiceCafe Yeah! That's having fun with where a bit of randomness and your brain making sense of it takes you and your story.
That is the biggest aspect of solorog: I see it as a DM training gym. Without DMs there is no TTRPGs.
Absolutely agree ☺️ it’s definitely DM Training
Finally! A video about this! Thanks.
I really appreciate you taking time to watch ☺️
Really good video showing how to easily play a solo RPG without being too complicated. One thing you may want to add to your town exploration, is after "clearing" the location, have your characters to search the building. Maybe they can find food, a weapon, a clue or an NPC with information that can advance your story.
Thank you so much ☺️!!! I appreciate the advice & I’m currently incorporating that into my exploration 😃.
This was so awesome! Can't wait to see where this goes next
I really really appreciate that ☺️!!!!!!!!!!
There is a Viking themed version of Cairn, called RuneCairn. It's meant to be played by just 2 people. Going to play it with some friends when I get the chance.
I’ve heard of runecairn. I will have to check it out. At the moment I don’t have any friends that play TTRPG’s but hoping to make some friends that share the same hobby.
I’m a bit late to this but I think you should do some ironsworn . It’s a solo rpg pbta style game that encourages world building as you play and you will be able to solo and worldbuild like you did in this episode
Thank you ☺️.
Great thumbnails, great energy, great vibes. You nat 20d this. Keep it up!
lol I really really appreciate that ☺️ it means A LOT!!! ☺️
I love the assets you've made, definitely get the imagination going. The tables are cool. Though one thing jumped out at me is that I would make my town encounter table more people and event (thieves, town criers, market days, mystics tent, etc)focused, unless if it's supposed to be an abandoned town table. Loved the resolution to the wolf encounter, also a table worth making would be a reaction table, so in the old dnd the table looked a bit like, 2d6 roll, 2- Hostile, immediate attack, 3-5 unfriendly - may attack (roll again next round at -3), 6-8 uncertain, 9-11 positive (roll next round at +3) 12+ friendly/helpful, modified by charisma mod and how you'd imagine the monster would normally act in the situation.
I look forwartd to discovering more of the would you're creating! And I may get some heavier stock paper and make some colourful maps myself!
Yeah. Was thinking that too. BFRPG has that sort of old school reaction table helping to make each encounter begin with some interesting randomness instead of starting out as a fight by default. I don't know if Cairn has something like that of its own?
@@paavohirn3728 Not sure if Cairn had its own but as you noted earlier one of the fun things is the opportunity to house rule things. I really like reaction tables as they have the opportunity to turn everything into a social encounter.
@@DungeonSlime Yeah! As with everything I like to go first with how the players roleplay the situation and then with a reaction roll if needed. But I really do appreciate the randomness of the reaction roll.
I'm generally generous if PCs offer something the other side wants, but sometimes there's no negotiating. One of the funniest was a PC trying to sweet talk a monstrous flesh eating worm. That didn't go well 🤣 In my old school style games it's fun to see players trying their best to avoid fights 😅 It makes things a lot more interesting and creative.
Ahhh I didn’t think about that, those types of tables which sound like a great idea which I will incorporate into the next game so I really appreciate it.
@@LegendsDiceCafe It's good to add little by little. Also you kind of did roll for reaction when you rolled that charm thing.
Reaction tables can be a bit more nuanced (and fun imo) though but they tend to come in the context of the particular game mechanics (like charisma bonuses).
Ok, so while writing this I got a little bit obsessed and am now comparing reaction tables in seven different old school rpg books 😆 It's fascinating but perhaps not recommended.
Let's sum up! You roll 2d6 (+/- possible charisma mod, +/- mod based on what characters do). 2d6 gives a nice bell curve.
-2: Immediate aggression
3-5: More hostile than expected
6-8: Expected or neutral behavior
9-11: Friendlier than expected
12+: Friendly/helpful
Note on modifiers: Originally for Cha mods of - 2/+2 and similar situational mods. I'd say this works for max +3 Cha mods but higher such as +4/+5 (5e) need bigger dice (2d10 perhaps).
Nice! Lego figures are great for minis.
Gotta say, you're much better at actually doing stuff than I am. I get caught up in my head, worried about doing it right. Keeps me from the actual doing part of lots of things.
I like all the random tables and maps you made. For my tastes, I'd probably have more NPC and event encounters in town. And/or have a different monster table for town so I'm only running into things I'd see in a town.
But that's me. It's cool to see what you come up with.
I definitely dig the Legos as well! And that spirit of getting right into doing things, learning through experimentation etc.
Thank you ☺️ I have a pretty nice collection of legos.
It is very easy to get into your head. I try to remind myself while I was playing that it’s my game, my fantasy world which means there is no wrong or right way to do it.
I Will absolutely add some NPC and event encounters, I really appreciate the suggestion. I didn’t think about it. I tried not to plan too much ahead and just enough to get started and figured I would learn and get suggestions along the way.
I appreciate it. I love legos. I haven’t been able to have them out since my toddler came into the picture because of space.
@@LegendsDiceCafe It's nice to be able to pass on your joy. I hope your toddler has plenty of fun with them, too. Maybe you'll eventually be able to play some of these games with them! Seems like a lot of folks are happy when their kids turn out to be into the TTRPGs.
@@LegendsDiceCafe That's a fantastic way to go forward! I'm doing my best to learn that and unlearn some baggage along the way. You are an inspiration!
Oh and cool thing with the Legos! I started getting back into them with my wife a little over a year ago 😁
Be careful with adventure gamebooks. They will suck you in. Between Fabled Lands and Lone Wolf, you have a lot to play, but you'll start seeing others that catch your eye. Marvel is even back in the gamebook game.
Marvel is on my list 😄. & lol I have already started seeing lots I would like to grab 🥴.
I use Lego figures as well. All the cool kids are doing it
Absolutely 💯 ☺️!!!
Hey Lady!
Just found your channel, I've subscribed,
Love your rhythm!
Cheers Maha!
^________^!
*Bows Low
*Snaps Fingers
Thank you ☺️
*slight bow back as I put my hand over my heart!*
Thank you for the compliment & the support ☺️
Wow! That's so cool you're drawing maps and creating your own random tables boldly sharing this part of your journey! So cool!
Your enthusiasm is inspiring!
I really appreciate that. I was pretty nervous to record it. I remembered the saying “to dance or sing like no one is around” & just have fun which I did ☺️
@@LegendsDiceCafe Awesome! That's real courage!
Def check out JP Coovert's channel for mapping tips n tricks. So damn helpful.
Thank you so much ☺️. He’s one of my favorite artists on RUclips!!!!
This was interesting. A nice mixture of pure gameplay like an old school D&D session, but also some narrative elements like a fleshed out game world based on two non-Western cultures, which is sorely lacking in the RPG world in general....
Thank you so much ☺️ and thank you for taking the time out to watch. Just incorporating things I enjoy in my games 🤓.
Ifyou havent you should take a gander at the book called "sword of the bastard elf" its such a cool adventure! :)
I have not heard of it until now so thank you ☺️ Adding it to my list.
This was really fun and interesting 🤔 to watch. Good stuff coach!
Thanks ☺️ & thank you for taking the time out to watch!!!!!!
Such a great video. Without many friends and fewer who want to play ttrpg I was glad to find solo play info. I will have to check those books out as I want to find some pre-written adventures.
Thank you so much 😊 & thank you so much for taking to watch & comment. It helps my channel out A LOT!!!!! ☺️☺️
Tunnels and Trolls
Awesome, thanks!!
😄 first thing I did when I discovered solo-rpg was escalating in a dice-store. So I dig your dice-box! Looking forward to further adventures!
Thank you so much ☺️
Check out "Roll the Bones" for Cairn.
Thank you!! I definitely will.
i looked for it but it's, Follow the Bones
Thank you 😊
I appreciate seeing what your approach was to playing solo. I keep wanting to try playing solo but haven't carved out the time to try. I'm curious though, have you thought about adding or using reaction tables for the monsters? I was thinking it might be interesting if you could roll to see if monesters were hostile, or friendly? Maybe a table for their wants/needs, are they hungry, are they trying to solve a problem? Either way great video and I look forward to part 2 and the Basic Fantasy video.
I did not think about reaction tables for the monsters but I really like that idea 💡and I shall use it ☺️. Thank you. I really appreciate the compliment. I didn’t plan too much because I figured I would learn what I was lacking or rather what I could add thru experience or from the comments from the video ☺️
There is an NPC reaction table in a supplement called The Cairn Adventurer's Guide, which I believe is available for free download. This table could be applied to monsters as well.
Why would there be a treasure chest just sitting randomly around town? What did the Gnome do that your character felt the need to pull out a dagger and attack them?
Great questions!!!!! Great questions for inspiration!!!!!! ☺️thank you.
"once I heard the term homebrew, I'M like: BET!" love it. you have a crazy cool and fun energy! thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much for an awesome compliment & taking time to check my video out ☺️!!!!
Up-doot for hand drawn, journal based character sheets!
Thanks ☺️
Lone Wolf is a great series of books i played the first series.
It’s very fun. Looking forward to grabbing the 2nd one in the series.
Wish you hadn't skipped the character creation entirely...that was part of the reason I clicked the video.
Sorry about that. I’ll make sure I don’t skip last character creation next time.
This is so inspiring! I want to solo cairn now!
That is really awesome to hear ☺️!!! Thank you
Never Played a TTRPG but I really like this. Looks easy the learn Hard to master
Are you on discord? If so we can connect on there & when I have some room in a game to join, you can try it out if you want.
@@LegendsDiceCafe Ok I dont remember if I do or don’t have a discord but I’ll keep that in mind thanks 👍🏾
@derrickjohnson4952 I’m on FB & IG as well.
Love your handwriting, I'm jealous!
Thank you ☺️. I was lol a little embarrassed to show it since it looks like scribble scrabble to some.
This was great, I like the DIY vibe.
Thank you so much 😊 & thank you for watching!!!!
Loved this! Glad I waas able to find your channel, can't wait to explore more of your videos
Thank you so much for watching and thank you for the support 😃!!!!!!!!!
Love your encounter tables
Thank you ☺️
Fabled Lands? Is that still in print? Holy cow!
lol I know they’ve been around for a while or rather it’s an older game.
@@LegendsDiceCafe Yeah, I used to collect these types of books, especially the Lone Wolf & Fighting Fantasy ones. But I missed these ones… glad you found them!
@AlexanderOsias thanks me too. I definitely plan on grabbing some more of the lone wolf series. I don’t think I’m familiar with Fighting Fantasy so I’ll have to check that out.
Hey, hey! I just wanted to hop on and say you and DaniCha give me life! It's so good to see fellow woc gamers in this some so and such kinda space if you know what I mean? I play mostly alone too, because my gal is having none of this "nonsense" so I was looking for some kind of system to use that wasn't so crazy to chill out with and I wanna thank you soooo much for playing this. Bc for cereal, I have been lost looking at all these systems with all these rigid rules. I'm gunna watch your other vids when I am just chilling out but I wanted to thank you again and sending big love!
Thank you sooooo much ☺️. I really appreciate that and I understand 💯!!!!!!! Are you on discord? If so add me ☺️ Coach Key
Can you make different playlists based on the system that you are using?
You mean playlists on RUclips? Like separate them into playlist for the systems I’m using?
@@LegendsDiceCafe Yes! Exactly! It would help keep stories straight, and easy to chain back-to-back.
I can absolutely do that😊.
@@LegendsDiceCafe thanks, it really helps when I have something consistent without having to manage the Playlist
Hi! I'm a brazilian roleplayer and find your channel while looking for Cairn content. I did love the hand draw maps, houserules tables and the vibe of the game play!
Thank you for watching ☺️. Thank you so much for the awesome compliments ☺️!!!!
Awesome video, did you say you learning to create maps? If so I found this RUclips channel where he shows you how to make maps both outdoor and dungeons using a variety of drawing tools. Your outdoor map, I love it, you're so organized with everything too. Have you heard about the RPG The Book of Cairn? You play woodland animals in it. Cannot wait to watch part 2 tomorrow. :)
Thank you so much for the compliments & supporting the Channel ☺️!!! Yes I’m learning to create maps 😃. What is the name of the channel you found about creating maps? I have not heard of the Book of Cairn 🤔. I was trying to search it.
@@LegendsDiceCafe, you're very welcome, the name of the channel is JP Coovert. I have learned a lot from him. :)
@@LegendsDiceCafe, he also has zine style tutorial books on his website, teaching how to draw maps.
@ravenshadowz2343 he is the top one I watch for my map lessons!!!!!!!!! I love his personality & have learned A LOT from his channel as well. That’s so cool 😎!!!!
@@LegendsDiceCafe, I should have known. 🙃
Your energy when playing and telling your story is very addictive. Bravo for recording an excellent playthrough. I already have my own fictional town and map which I turned into an interactive novel. Looking forward to expand it using the Cairn system 😊
Wow that’s awesome an interactive novel 😃!!!! Thank you so much for the compliment ☺️!!!!
Nice start...
Thank you so much 😊 . I have pt 2 uploaded as well 😁.
I enjoyed so much about this video! This was such a positive and inspiring "getting started" playthrough, thank you. ❤ 🎲
Thank you sooo much 😊☺️😊!
Really great work, I love your style of gaming and inventing. Adding a table of contents to your note book is so brilliant, I'll be applying that idea to my own note books right away. I don't know the Cairn book but it looks like it might be something I can use for my own start in solo RPGing. Switching up the D 20, yes! That's exactly why I have a big ol' bag of dice, if one die is a monster magnet then you gatta switch it out. Thank you for sharing your adventure :)
Thank you so much 😊 & thank you for taking time to watch. I learned adding the table of contents in my books 📕 from an old friend. It helps me a lot lol since I put everything in my notebooks rather than my electrics. Let me know how your solo journey goes ☺️ May the dice be ever in your favor!!!!!!!
Gracias por la partida en solitario, me gusto mucho, el juego Cairn es bastante cool y jugarlo en solitario también, saludos desde el fin del mundo Chile...
Wow thank you so much ☺️. & thank you for taking time to support and watch!!!!!!
Just discovered you today! You are awesome! Love your maps and imagination, as well as your note taking. Keep up the good work!
Thank you sooo much!!!! 😃😃!!!
Love the energy and enthusiasm you have for gaming.
Thank you so much ☺️!!!!
Sounds like the town has been taken over by the agents of that Red Wizard. He's got everyone tucked away and locked up somewhere and he's got all kinda nasties around to keep anyone from snooping about.
Absolutely 💯. We will take care in exploring to gather info before we attempt to stop the Red Wizard 🧙.
If I had half the passion in her voice, I'd have been successful in life. ❤️
Thank you so much for such an awesome compliment ☺️!!!!
Love watching solo plays, yours is great, love how organized you are, and love your perspective as a newcomer! You have an absolutely great attitude, I hope role playing games gives you an eternity of fun!
Thank you so much ☺️ & thank you for taking time to watch. It has brought great joy into my life. It has also helped me to expand creatively 😃!!!! It’s the absolute perfect hobby for an artist.
