My dude spent seven minutes on the honorable mentions. Talk about quality content right there. I've been diving into solo TTRPG pretty heavily in the last month or so, and I don't know how I never stumbled onto this video (I've seen so many of yours).
You probably haven't seen it because the algorithm hates the channel. LOL! Tons of my subscribers tell me they don't even get notifications of when I post a new video. Something happened to the channel October 2022 which put it in some kind of limbo, making growth in views nearly impossible.
What an awesome list, I don't think you've missed anything! Thanks for mentioning Broken Shores once again, I'm currently working on a hexcrawl adventure for it.
Really love this whole channel, friend. I appreciate that you go over such a variety of tools and add-ons. Most other solo-focused channels I’ve found focus pretty heavily on systems when they do reviews, but I’ve got plenty of those already. Thanks for the excellent videos!
This channel was my introduction in soloing, and Solitary Defilment was the one that "clicked" on my brain and all made sense. I even bought it twice (first time I missed Alone in the Crowd). Just mentioning, for a very very rules light agnostic system, I like one called Loner, it's my fav Yes/No Oracle.
@TheDungeonDive I dunno why yt keep deleting my posts made on phone. Sorry if it's duplicated. Sadly, I didn't get the physical one, I'm from Brazil and shipping is hard as hell. I think I first bought on on site and printed myself, then I learned (from you) about Alone in the Crowd version on another and bought it again. MB and Feratory was on stockat Amazon here, so these I got hardcopies, and now I need to ship Heretic to complete the 3 ones. Bout Determiation, I did something similar. My first campaing was a hexcrawl from south to north Grift, and I counted how many times I cheated death. Now I formed a party for citycrawl and to try some ready-made adventures (Box of Shadows and Bridges of Mur)
You will definitely amend this list to officially include Tricube Tales once you spend more time with it. Incredibly adaptive, clean, and focused system, especially when played solo!
32:00 There's "Black Streams: Solo Heroes", originally a supplement for Labyrinth Lord, but it's basically ready to use plug-and-play Scarlet heroes solo rules for all OSR compatible games.
Fantastic video! I think Scarlet Heroes looks like it could be perfect for me, pretty much all in one book designed for solo play in mind. Will be interesting to see where 2d6 ends up falling on this list, will have to look into that. An interesting top 10 list would be combining this and your solo board game list and seeing where everything lands.
For me too, Scarlet Heroes was the one system that makes solo play something doable at first. The only thing I regret is that its solo tables are bound to its setting. I think it's a pity that Kevin Crawford didn't adapt these solo rules with the Without Number series. I'm also surprised to not see Mythic GME (especially its second edition which is for me a masterclass) and any mention to Shawn Tomkin (Well solitary defilement is based on Ironsworn so maybe that counts for something :) ). Great video nonetheless.
@@TheDungeonDive I agree that Mythic GME has too many fiddly parts RAW, but have you seen the One Page Mythic update she made? I love it. She also made a One Page Adventure Crafter and I printed both out, laminated them back to back and use them all the time now. They are in editions of Mythic Magazine.
I liked your concept of using determination as a way of cheating death. It makes sense that the hero might have a moment where something comes along to move the story along. GeekGamer speaks about moving the narrative in her book on solo gaming and you have enriched the concept to something believable.
Question for you: Can you one day do a video for solo RPG game and supplements that AREN’T fantasy? I have been getting into RPGs with a more modern setting and even westerns and cyberpunk but it seems like the majority of the product out there is geared towards fantasy. If you could help point some of us in the right direction on supplements and games for different genres I would appreciate it.
My wheelhouse is fantasy - that's just what I like most and play the most. Mainly because I have the most stuff for the fantasy setting. However, I've covered Space Aces (which is also on this list - did you miss it?), and Starforged. We have some other things planned as well, so stay tuned.
I have a video on Space Aces. It's fantastic. Also Tricube tales has a TON of micro-settings. Everything from firefighting to cyberpunk to goblin gangsters, space opera and so on.
Super cool video - big misses for me in this range of products are Game Master Apprentice's Cards, and why not my small homebrews Plot Unfolding Machine and Game Unfolding Machine :)
Good set of tools here, it seems. I'm adding a few of them to my list; Space Aces in particular scratches my specific itch actually. On the note of Mork Borg, I think I'll finally pull the trigger on that one. It's been on my list for a while now and I just picked up Pirate Borg but it's not been delivered yet. I do however keep hearing about the solo expansion and it just seems like something worth looking into. And yeah, I want most of the Mork Borg stuff and expansions mainly because all of the Borg stuff looks pretty. Death in Space, CyBorg, Pirate Borg, all of it looks absolutely sick and I'm tempted to build my own shelf so I can have an absolutely gorgeous bookshelf full of pretty games XD I'm no dice goblin, I'm a library gremlin hehehehehehe
I absolutely love when you do videos on these RPG tools. Do you know 22:07 of any that work well with Shadows of Brimstone Hex Crawl? I would love to see something for that.
Scarlet Heroes and White Box are in my backpack. I have them always with me. I also try to play D&D 5e-Adventures with Scarlet Heroes (ascending AC - 20 = descending AC; Challenge Rate = HD). I don't care about spoilers. Just want to expirience the story and fight some monsters.
Great video, would be great to see one on how you solo Scarlet Heroes. I picked it up and got a bit lost with the solo play so interested in how you use it. Perhaps I should go back and watch Peril of Cymbaline again too 😅
Really appreciate your balanced evaluation of these cool products with both their pros and cons. Agree with your view of Blackoath's games. They are very refined designs with interestingly distinct flavor. But they desperately need summaries and play aids to include all the essential rules and tables in one handy reference. Plus their new titles seem to come out too fast and too close to one another, which makes me feel overwhelmed and confused at times. The DMG of AD&D 1e (pp. 47, 49 "The Adventure" + p. 173 Appendix B Random Wilderness Adventure) remains my go to wilderness adventuring too for solo play. Simple, elegant, and effective without overengineering things or unnecessary frills. The thing with using the Inkwell Sidequest cards in solo play is too much information is revealed all at the same time, leaving not enough room for emerging narrative and surprise. I feel these cards are more suitable for GMs instead. Really looking forward to the new edition Space Aces. Any thoughts on how Scarlet Heroes can work together with Kevin Crawford's "Without Numbers" series? A hidden gem and my personal pick is the Universal Dungeon Adventure Deck (any many others) by New Realms Publishing. I would say their sets work even better than Axebane's Deck of Many Dungeon in that they are more versatile and flexible and compatible with most RPG (esp old school and OSR) systems. Geek Gamer made a review years back. It's a pity that the publisher seems to be in hiatus since the pandemic. Their products are all very printer friendly. The early titles are really worth the money but the later ones seem overpriced. While really cool in their own right, using all the Top 10 together can feel too unwieldy.
For the Inkwell cards, I use them as idea generators. I don't typically follow them like a checklist. I've never used any of Crawford's other things before.
Alex from Blackoath here, thanks for the feedback! I admit I need to release that sort of helpful tools for my games, instead of relying on the community to do so. I'm actively working on improving this. As for releasing too many new games, what can I say, I have a lot of ideas and it's hard not to get excited about them and work on them. I have a couple of new games soon to be released, but now I'm focusing on circling back and releasing material for my existing games. First is a hexcrawl sandbox adventure for Broken Shores, then some new content for Riftbreakers, and of course new content for Sacrifice.
Your determination point sounds like Savage Worlds bennie mechanic. Mork Borg Death In Space is on my list to try, have you tried it? To add to the grim dark types I will add Disciples Of Bone And Shadow, Dark Streets & Darker Secrets and Seekers Beyond The Shroud.
Thank you for this great video. Where did you buy the physical version of scenario builder and the world builde from shieldice ? On Drivethrurpg there is only the PDF. Thanks
I find the one page solo engine to be very open ended and flexible. I’m currently using the one page solo engine with the Knave 2e draft. It’s dead simple and I don’t get lost fiddling with rules!
I played a few solo games of Mork Borg with Solitary Defilement. I think that it achieves what it set out to achieve, which is to say that its a fun game for one-shots or maybe very short campaigns. For me, I had a blast in spite of not really enjoying the art style, but it did feel a little too rules light/lite for a longer form campaign (which I'm pretty sure it doesn't recommend either way!). The only thing with rules light systems is that I find they really lack depth and start becoming a little dull in the long-run if solo playing. I can imagine Mork Borg would be better if played with mates rather than solo as the game seems so quirky and bizarre that it lends itself to a shared experience.
Mork Borg looks and sounds cool lots of options saw a cool as hell Pirate expansion and then Forbidden Psalm and a company I get STLs for every month give our games to play with the minis with a story for that game as well as 5E DnD and of course if you wanted solo play you could via other resourse books. I don't remember, sorry. Things like that also come and go on Amazon. I order dozens of things from Amazon a week, and I've never encountered a single issue with anything. Just search for something that looks good. That's all I do.
Thanks for the awesome video. I see that there are 4 different decks of Outdoor Encounter cards (no. 6 on your list). Are they different from each other in theme, flavor, etc? I mean, does one deck for example focus more on zombies, undead than the others and so on?
24:54 I always hear good things about table fables but they always strike me as very feminine and not up to my sword and sorcery setting…. Have you ever tried d30 companions? Don’t know what to get I think I’m going to just end up getting a bunch and see what sticks… I’m thinking Mythic, Perilous tables, sandbox generator, the d30 books just to move from the paralysis
Most of the games I play (and most of the fantasy fiction I read) is S&S style play (you should see my S&S shelves!), and Table Fables (especially II) work great for that. There is nothing inherently masculine about S&S, heroic fiction, or adventure gaming, not is there anything inherently feminine about Table Fables. On the very first page of quests there is one about a witch who eats babies, and a devil stealing souls. The reason you always hear good things about them is that they are some of the most valuable tools ever written for the RPG hobbyist. I have the D30 Sandbox Companion, but haven't used it yet. Just in my stack of tools to eventually get through! I'm sure I'll get to making a video on it when I do. :)
@@TheDungeonDive I disagree with you about the masculinity aspect, of course historically basically all but a menial fraction of conquerors, specially those by the sword, were men, in reality and fiction. But we’re allowed to disagree. I still really like your content and appreciate your opinion on books so the books must be good. I almost didn’t buy Space Aces because of the childish nature of the art but if the content transcends the art you can argue with that!
Would you recommend using the Sandbox Generator as well as the Untold Encounters of the Random Kind with Forbidden Lands as a base world and rule set? Good pairing?
I am not familiar with Forbidden Lands enough to recommend it. I find the system a bit too complex, personally. But if you like it, I'm sure that those tools would work well with it.
Hi there ! You mention Firefly. What do you think of "Firefly the role playing game" about solo playing ? I don't own the book but love Firefly and I was wondering if it is solo playable. Thanks by advance :)
Nope! That's what google is for. Super easy to find. I'm not here to help people buy things, I'm here to present information. I'm not part of the marketing team for these products, and they didn't sponsor the video in any way. Type the name into google, and you'll find it. Also, as I've mentioned about 500 times on the channel, links go dead all the time, and then people complain that my link is dead. Man, people really have forgotten how to find stuff online.
Scarlet Heroes is underrated. Worth it just for the solo oracles at the back. And if you have any Filipino or South-East Asian friends, show them the bestiary. Chances are their grandparents told them scary stories or warned them to behave or many of those monsters included in the book would come and get them.
Oh yeah! My elementary school was 60% south-east Asian, so I grew up pretty much surrounded by those cultures. That coupled with my time spent studying Hong Kong cinema, and even I’m a little familiar with some of the bestiary. :).
Deck of cards...... Deck of cards...... Why so many games are using this mechanism ? What's wrong with rolling dice people? The good old random tables we choose with dice rolling. Simple, used, fun, efficient, known. Stay with that please. Not everyone has a deck of cards.
A deck of cards is the single best tool. You can manipulate it, stack it, create subsets, and do more things with its numbers and suits that you just can’t do with dice! A standard deck of cards is also cheaper than a set of polyhedral dice. :)
I’ve heard that sentiment before. But I don’t understand it. To me a deck of cards is the single best thing ever. That’s why the game I’m making has 9 decks of cards. :).
>Mork Borg
Sorry, but you have shit taste. Lmao

My favorite all-time work of S&S is super feminine - The Bloodsong / Warrior Witch of Hell trilogy, by Asa Drake. It is a masterwork of S&S!
@@TheDungeonDive I’ll look it up!
@TheDungeonDive thanks. BTW, tks for the recommendation re Dingeon Degenerates, just ordered it yesterday 😀!
Oh nice! Hope you enjoy it.
What would be your system of choice? Tks!
For solo? Scarlet Heroes.
Hi there ! You mention Firefly. What do you think of "Firefly the role playing game" about solo playing ? I don't own the book but love Firefly and I was wondering if it is solo playable.
Thanks by advance :)
Not sure. I’m not a huge fan of FF so I’ve never looked into it.
@@TheDungeonDive thanks for the reply !
No links to the products? It's not the end of the world, but would have been nice for anyone who wanted to buy.

Great🍾 😅💋
Deck of cards......
@@TheDungeonDive yeah.....I don't know...
I just hate deck of cards. I don't like the aesthetics if that makes sense....😕
I’ve heard that sentiment before. But I don’t understand it. To me a deck of cards is the single best thing ever. That’s why the game I’m making has 9 decks of cards. :).
