  • Here’s another quick and easy decoupage DIY! In this DIY I’ll be decoupaging on glass cutting boards that I purchased from The Dollar Tree! I will demo several techniques including reverse decoupage AND the ‘iron-on’ method. These two techniques makes this project so much fun and so easy! You will be creating beautiful glass cutting boards in no time!
    You’ll need some decorative napkins (I get mine from Vippies Designs) glass cutting boards from The Dollar Tree and other readily available crafting supplies, like: brushes, Mod Podge, chalk paint, nail file, alcohol wipes and acrylic sealant! I’ll also introduce you to my newest crafting tool, a small craft iron by Cricket! But you can also use a household iron to do this project.
    These cutting boards are fun to make, great gifts and a fantastic project for craft nights with your friends!
    These cutting boards are beautiful decor but they can also be used!
    However they do need special care. Here’s some important instructions and other information : no dishwasher, no microwave, wipe the top after use and dry. Do not submerge in water and use only as labeled “cutting board”!
    Please give a thumbs up, subscribe to my youtube channel and hit the little notification bell. I look forward to your comments! Thanks for decoupaging with me! Joan-Marie Domino

    Your projects are so pretty. You have a great eye for placement of the napkins. When you use spray glitter, do you spray it on before decoupaging the napkin?

    • @JoanMarieDomino
      @JoanMarieDomino  4 года назад +4

      Hi! I put the glitter spray on first (or extreme glitter Mod Podge) and let dry. Then I do a couple coats of Mod Podge on top of the glitter spray and let each coat dry before I do the ‘iron-on’. If you are using the extreme glitter MP for the glitter effect (NOT the spray) then just add one coat of regular MP on top of the extreme glitter MP. Then you are ready to adhere the napkin. Hope that makes sense. Thank you for the kind words, they mean so much to me! - Joan ❤️🙂

      Hi! Yes you can decoupage without a craft iron, you can use a household iron on medium cotton and no steam. You still need to put the parchment on top before you iron. You can also put the napkin on the glass without the iron but you must do it while the glue is still wet. Then carefully place the top layer of the napkin on top of the glue and smooth it out. I hope that helps. - Joan 🙂❤️

I’m having a hard time finding a napkin with an image size big enough to cover the whole glass. I looked on Vippies and couldn’t find the one you used. Can you give me some advice on finding napkins with a full image when opened? Thank you!

    • @JoanMarieDomino
      @JoanMarieDomino  2 года назад

      Hi Carey! I made this video several years ago so I think some of the ones I used have sold out. Guest size napkins are good for the cutting boards, Vippies has a bunch under floral. The napkins are usually noted if it opens to a complete picture, which is what you need. You can also use printed gift tissue, paper table cloths and fabric. I have another video for using fabric instead of napkins. Also regular paper will also work. Hope that helps! Joan 🙂

    I have made four of these cutting boards and they turned out really beautiful. I’m having a problem on the back side, though. I’m getting bubbles on the back side. It doesn’t affect how it looks on the front but I’m wondering what I’m doing to cause this. Too much decoupage glue? Too much or too little ironing? I’m using a regular size iron on high heat with no steam. If you have any suggestions I’d appreciate it. Thank you!

      Bubbles on the back..did you put a sealant on the back or Mod Podge both can cause bubbles. Also when you iron you have to make sure the entire glass is heated enough to melt the glue so when you iron go slow. You can try to iron again. Let me know if that helps Joan

    Thank you for your video it was very reaffirming and helpful. I decided to paint the back of my of my glass cutting board using the white Waverly chalk paint, just as you described. But I'm noticing cracking in the paint along the edges of the glass cutting board. Do you have any suggestions on how to prevent that?

    • @JoanMarieDomino
      @JoanMarieDomino  Год назад

      Hi Kathleen! Here are some possibilities Waverly is a thicker chalk paint and may crackle. Mod Podge needs at least a couple days to dry before the paint and this is a common occurrence. Instead of putting MP on before you paint use a light coat of a sealant like Rustoleum or DuraClear. Let that dry before you paint. The sealant will give you the barrier you need before you paint. Good luck. 🙂

    • @JoanMarieDomino
      @JoanMarieDomino  2 года назад

      Hi Diane! Has it gone away yet? Sounds like you put a lot of MP on top of the napkin. Too much MP and it won’t dry clear if it hasn’t by now. Did you re-iron? Paint? Could be other reasons. Watch the video again is really my best answer because I don’t have your cutting board in front of me. 🙂 Joan

    Thank you again. I watch and use all your tutorials. I have at least 10 bottles of Waverly "chalk" paint like you show in your video. But then I noticed under "Chalk" it says it is an acrylic paint. Sure is confusing for consumer. Is it chalk paint or acrylic paint? That makes a big difference. So you're saying it's ok to use when a chalk paint is needed? Like for your glass plates or for painting jars or the cutting board above?

    • @JoanMarieDomino

      Chalk paint is acrylic paint. It has an additive that makes it have a slight texture and matte finish. You can make your own by googling homemade chalk paint. Most start with acrylic white paint. - Joan

      @@JoanMarieDomino Thk you. I read the label again and I had taken each line separately. "No Prep" "Acrylic Paint". But once I read again I can see "no prep acrylic paint". Now it makes sense. But now I have another question. I just finished ironing my glass cutting plate you demonstrated above. I noticed when I unwrapped 2 of the glass plates from the Dollar Tree that one was smooth on both sides. I thought that was weird, but I felt it could be my practice plate. Once I completed ironing and flipped it over, I saw all the brush marks from the 2 coats of decoupage glue. I was hoping to give as gifts but I don't like seeing the glue strokes. Does it show on the glass plate that is textured on one side too? The glass plate turned out beautiful other than that and I suspect I can't cut on it so I'll just use it as plate to set wine on or a flower vase. Thanks again for all your "beginner" instructions. As you can tell, I'm a beginner at decoupaging. I make cards and jewelry but I want to branch out and your videos have helped me so much.

      Hi Vine! I almost always use a sponge dabber when I apply chalk paint, I don’t like streaks either. If you are going to try on a Dollar Tree cutting board and are not happy with the results, you can soak in warm soapy water to remove the napkin....then try again! Hi! The same thing happened to me. You have to give a lot of time for each layer to dry or the paint will crackle. If you put a top coat of Mod Podge before you paint give it at least a few days before you paint. In the meantime if you want you can soak off the napkin and try again. Warm soapy water, soak and scrub. The napkin should come off. It you put a sealant on now it will be harder to remove.
