- Hey y'all! Today I have for you a comparison video on two of the most popular ways to define curls: Shingling and Raking. You may or may not call it either or, but these two methods of defining your curls are quick, effective and long-lasting. Find out which method may work for your curls.

Personally, I prefer the shingling method for my hair... yes, it's time consuming but it's so worth it in my opinion.
I just love comparison videos and this was very educational. One of the most helpful videos I have seen in the natural hair community lately. So many people just keep doing the same stuff over and over.

The problem with thick hair is you have to use a whole lot of product.

When I first big chopped 5 years ago I realize after seeing your video that I was SHINGLING my hair and I loved how fluffy and defined my 2nd & 3rd day hair was. Now that it's longer I'm realizing I RAKE it!! That would be okay for my lose curls in the front that comes out wavy but in the back it looks like an AFRO! I believe it's because it longer, it's 3c unlike my front 2A and RAKING it makes it less Defined!!😲 OMG!!! I'm going home tonight to SHINGLE my hair and see what happens. Wow, I’ve mostly use the Raking Method when styling my hair in a wash n go. Once my hair dries, I have a lot of volume and frizz. On my next wash n go I’m going to try the Shingling Method. Thank you for sharing!

I LIVE for your hair tutorials!!!! Personally, I'm the raker type & it gives me really good definition depending on how much gel I use. But you're right about the freeze. It's no joke!

Sis I had never tried the shingling method until I saw your video and let me tell you....wearing my hair down is sooo much nicer now! My hair looks amazing! my hair in the back is the same as yours and it was nice to find a video that could realy help me and in my case the two methods work for me, one for more definition in the back that tends to get very frizzy and one for the front part where my curls are wider and fine so thanks for the video.....really helped

I've pretty much been doing raking ever since a went natural. After watching one of your other videos, I just tried shingling and it definitely makes prettier curls.
I like the raking. Like you I do not have fine/thin hair but I think the raking look better. Definitely going to try it.
I don't do either but will definitely try shingling. I haven't done that in year because it took so long but I agree, sacrificing volume in the beginning for definition will be my go to

Your hair is beautiful. I can definitely see the difference between the two methods. I like the way the shingling came out. yeoshingi You may be high porosity, I am too and I have learned that the LAOC (leave in, aloe vera, coconut oil, and crem )method really works for me, I will try to link the video down below
esml my recommendation is drink water and make sure your hair is moisturized at night braid it.
Remember what you braid gets longer. you dont have to braid it but I find my hair looks nice when I do. When you go to sleep put a satin scarf or cap this will allow the hair to drink up all of the moisture you put on it instead of it just air drying or what gets on the pillow; which wouldn't be good because then the hair didnt get what it needed completely.
This should revive your hair.
This is what I do and my hair is healthier because of it and longer

I like the shingle method. But I have been doing the raking method and like you said. My hair is fine and thin low density which makes definition on my low density hair look good. I'm going to try the shingle method.
Hi. I usually do the raking method but after seeing your results I think I might get more definition doing the shingling method. So I will try that the next time i wash my hair. Shingling takes FOREVER in my 4b/4c hair! But raking doesn't work for me...will try it with this product and see what happens x

I do a combination of shingling and raking. But I would really love to take the time and shingle the whole way through and see how the results are. I also have never used eco gel because I always thought it was too drying, but I would like to try that as well. I also liked the step at the end, where you break the gel-cast with the serum. I have never done that, so I'd like to try that too 🤗 Thanks for sharing!

I've only ever done the raking method and i can attest to the frizz and it not lasting more than about 4 days. Definitely gonna try when the shingling method when I have more time.

The shingling definitely works better for your thick hair. The racking work better for me because I need volume. My hair is fine but I will try the shingling when I want it to last more than 2 days like the raking does. Thanks for video

How are you able to shingle your hair so quickly? Right now it takes me 1.5 hours! Do you think it's better to take larger sections?
Ashley Jumease I kinda do both & section my Type-4 hair n2 4 sections. Each area takes abt 5-6 min. After I rake, I go back thru & shingle. W-n-g are all I ever do so I've gotten really good at it. used to take an hour.

I notice the more workable the gel is and depending on the slip of the gel it can speed up time. Like wet like is too stiff and I have to keep spraying water to make it more workable and even break off hair shingling 😫 I been gave up on that gel.

I have fine hair. While I love shingling and the very defined curls, it seems to take much longer to get volume. I prefer the volume initially. Either way your hair looks beautiful and healthy. Love your videos too. Hoping you'll make it to Curl Fest in NY.

I've been wanting to learn how to define curls because my best friends have 4c? hair (I think, but I've only ever seen it in braids, so I'm not sure. Definitely not an expert) and they've always wanted curls like this. Any tips for that would be great!
