David is a truly gifted man, my appreciation for the laughter he has given me is immeasurable. Now, I find we have something more in common (not just gay guys in 30+ year relationships who have delightful sisters), we both had parents with dementia. Our Mother was problematic, volatile, sometimes unhinged, and in any conflict she would try her best to destroy you as a person. She was never honest with us about anything in her life. Finally, after decades of washing down her tranquilizers with copious amounts of scotch, she was diagnosed with dementia. My Sister tried to have her live with her, she is incredibly patient. But assisted living was the best choice for both of them. Once the dementia was advanced, we began to enjoy a relationship with a sweet, appreciative, kind lady. Tiffany was not a drug addict. She was not a mentally ill. She was a baker and an artist. She was a beautiful soul and no one in her family can ever hold a candle to her light that burned out too soon.
As a schizophrenic person who’s relatively young, and also as a sibling, I’d say give him another chance. For us, things that seem so important in the moment are completely forgotten the next year or week or even day, and arguments don’t hold real substance because nothing holds real substance, it’s all someone else’s narrative. Break the ice slowly, especially if you haven’t spoken in a few years. If he’s on social media, maybe like one of his posts, say something positive about it. Be delicate but never patronizing. You’re not talking to the person you fought with that family gathering. Existence is chimerical, ever-changing for people like us. We reinvent against our will. Approach the situation like you’re meeting him for the first time and see what you have in common. Start small and good things will happen.
Are you aware that Tiffany killed herself shortly after David awkwardly turned his back on her that day? He has to live with that guilt every day of his life.

This is the first time I have commented. Mr. Sedaris was pleasant and lovely to watch. Self deprecating but super funny, and totally interesting. I could listen to him all day!!
I read his books to my mother one summer when she was recovering from a bad fall, and we both laughed till we cried, and laughed till she " snerked, & then we'd laugh some more.... and my mother's laugh is one of my favorite sounds so that summer was awesome for us both. Thanks to David Sedaris 🤗💜
I got to see him in Hastings, NE and chat with him while he signed books for me. Alas, when he asked what was a good place to eat in town, I had to tell him there was none. To this day I wonder where he ate that night.
I got a very kind letter from him this week - one writer to another, and both huge fans of the late Andre Dubus and the happily still with us Tobias Wolff.
My first David Sedaris book was "Me Talk Pretty One Day". I was hooked and read everything before and after. One of my favorite moments was when his father had some sort of infection and was taking antibiotics prescribed for the dog, figuring it was all the same. He told this to one of his daughters and she told him he shouldn't do that, not because it might be unhealthy, but because how's the dog going to get better if he takes all his medicine.
Love him and everything he does… and side note, I wish more guys (even str8 ones) had the confidence to have fun with what they wear and dress with flair
@Not Meg Griffin there’s a way to have fun with your look that is more green. And everyone has to wear clothes; stop acting morally superior just because yours are dull and blah.
It’s classic reverse snobbery and usually a sign of a mediocre American cishet male who won’t wear anything that isn’t ill-fitting and earth-toned lest someone think he’s gay.
@Not Meg Griffin We need all types of satirists during these difficult times. I would check out David Sedaris. I saw him in person once and laugh so hard I cried. He is also has had great observations about Trump and undecided voters, religion etc. As they say: don't judge a book by its cover.
Sedaris is great, his thinking is great, extremely funny when you watch (in your head) a story unfold while seeing (in your head) how he thinks about it during the situation.
I can and have re read his books over and over again and when dealing with hard times I can open one and always find something so interesting, clever and funny it makes everything alright in my world. What a gift he has and Amy as well. We are lucky to have people in this world like them.
I'm glad this worked out well for your family. Watching my Oma in dementia was scary & sad; however, I'm grateful that she was not aware of her intellectual losses. A very, very gentle woman with an amazing mind & can-do attitude of many of that generation.
This is amazing. Above I wrote "the elder Mr. Sedaris proves my theory that in dementia the unused part of the brain kicks in. I can really relate to his teeth issues. I live in poverty, like so many in America, & my teeth are wrecked & of course I can't afford to fix them. Wearing masks was a great break from that.
If you truly live in poverty, you should be able to get super-low-cost health care through the Affordable Care Act, including at least some dental care.
My parents just had our teeth removed rather than have cavities filled. They never taught us about dental hygiene. We were poor, but they always prioritized cigarettes and beer over any other need. I really take care of my remaining teeth, my hygienist is always amazed by my lack of tartar.

I got to see him in Hastings, NE and chat with him while he signed books for me. Alas, when he asked what was a good place to eat in town, I had to tell him there was none. To this day I wonder where he ate that night.
What a smart charming guest. Plus a new Julie Andrews story!
He got his teeth done mentioned in the book happy go lucky. They look amazing. 😃
Just like the rest of him.
Sedaris had me laughing outloud here in the privacy of my own home. That man is FUNNY. Love all his books.
I love David Sedaris! This is the first I've Ever seen him interviewed. He is such a consistently productive author. The touring amazes me.
Stephen has multiple interviews with him & also his sister Amy. Worth checking out.
@Not Meg Griffin And if we lose our senses of humor, we die a little quicker.
@Not Meg Griffin I guess you should stop watching Colbert
My dad was always a bit of a prick when people said or did something he didn't agree with. He's become nice and easygoing since dementia has set in.
My father, who could be a tyrant, and who was an alcoholic, became a sweet, gentle man in his years of Alzheimer's. He forgot he was an alcoholic and he made a face when mom gave him some wine. On the other hand, his roommate, a beloved Lutheran pastor (this was MN) began to swear, he grabbed the nurses' privates, and he yelled all day long. Someone please fund me to do the research!
I just love David!
I love David Sedaris! Great interview 👍
My all time favorite author. I adore every single thing about him
Mr Sedaris reminds me of the late, great, Wally Cox. Interesting man.
Oh my gosh, Wally Cox was great! I never made that connection, thanks.
There's no need to fear -- Underdog is here!
Very much agree, and to me Wally Cox was a bore as well.
@@Hal1344 Who do you love?
I'm a simple man. I see a Sedaris, I click the like button.
I really take care of my remaining teeth, my hygienist is always amazed by my lack of tartar.
great show in the UK. Such a funny intelligent man.
“We both got our shots”. I haven’t had a drink since I got here!?!” I loved that.
the funny runs deep in the Sedaris genes. He's hysterical.
David Sedaris is my hero! Saw him when he came to Australia...from a distance. I was too shy to get my book signed. Usually I'm loud that's just what happens when your faced with someone you admire so much.
National Treasure David Sedaris... nay, GLOBAL TREASURE.
omg... thank you colbert!
Back story....
I was horribly abused. My adoptive mother was always hounding me to smile on command and when i did, it looked dumb and the abuse would get worse while never being able allowed to show any expression at all when she was abusing me. I learned B*tch Face way to young for the worse reasons.
I am been like your friend here, practicing how to smile so i dont look fake or force. or stupid. I am trying to break out of my ptsd issues. and i get so tired of hearing people say "smile" and i think i am... and all i do is look scared. i didnt work this hard in over coming so much to still look like a deer in the head lights.
Thank you thank you for that tip
One of my top 3 favorite interviews from Stephen’s show. I didn’t know much about David before; now I’m going to go read all his books, perhaps on audio.
DO IT!!
David Sedaris - love him!
Noticed the teeth straight away. Loved how they used to be but I'm glad David is happier about how they are now. Bloody funny interview...as usual.
The outfit I didn’t know I absolutely needed lol
I frickin' adore David Sedaris. Can't wait to read the new father-centric book as I as well have a complicated relationship with my late father. Cheers!
I wrote to David Sedaris after I read Theft by Finding. I took notes about the ideas I loved and googled so many things. Truly a great read. He wrote back! I opened my mailbox and there it was! Goosebumps! I put the postcard in a frame and it sits on my mantle.
He and his sister, Amy, have such similar voices…I love them both!
Love David. 🌹 COVID has a message. Slow down. Reacquaint with love. 💙 Like many Americans I have dental issues. Send money!!!
Wow! I’ve listened to Sedaris for ever and always thought he was a young guy! Hahahaha.
Maybe he was when you started listening.
David your books are the only ones to hold my attention.
You are brilliant and so entertaining
You look like a handsome devil, David! What a great smile! Much affection from the city of Detroit!
Holy crap, that "say money" tip is gold. Gonna use the for the rest of my life.
I listen to David Sedaris every night.I have Audible, and I just..love Sedaris' voice.
Always my favorite!! 🤩🤩🤩
His NPR Christmas classic about the elf job is bust-a-gut all-over funny.
I wonder if it’s new book mentions his youngest brother, “the Rooster.” “You can’t kill the Rooster, but you can fuck him up a bit…”
I’m not sure that’s the quote, but I remember reading about it in David’s books
doubtful he asked to not be written about I believe
Rooster did my floors and it was an adventure but he was amazing & floors are perfect
LOL! "the Rooster" runs a flooring company in the Sedaris' home town of Raleigh, NC. and they do excellent work. A brilliant family indeed.
I’m 63 and this is the first time I ever heard of this dude. Gotta check him out. I do know who Amy Sedaris is though!
Ah! Love the smile David Sedaris!
I can’t read Big Boy without crying with laughter.
Total classic! I also love Jesus Shaves.
@@BethBuelow "A bell, though, that's f*cked up" -- the all-time money line (!)
Stephen Colbert David sedaris answered fan letters awesomeness job interview
I pictured him, Amy, and Gretchen shopping in Japan when I saw his funky jacket.
Me too!!
A father who gets dementia and forgets he's 'a really difficult person.' I had the same experience!
Thank you for the book David - love you and Amy
I used to love his stuff. So many years ago. When I listened to WAMC in Albany NY. It was a great radio station.
I want David to write a chapter about the time I was on a plane and had headphones in, and I was snort laughing so hard the person next to me called the flight attendant to see if I was okay. He’s brilliant.
Love David's outfit--so him.
And you can guarantee that it’s expensive! Probably Comme Des Garçons!
@@valhoff3 agreed
I never heard of this writer until I saw part of '60 Minutes' tonight with an interview. I am impressed that his books are treasured by fans in comments here and how late relatives loved the writings too.
Let us all find great dentists and dental hygienists.
Now I have another reason to go down to the bookstore again! 😃
Such a great personality David has
Love David - beautiful smile! 😀#money
I so love David Sedaris!
You can see the family resemblance to Amy Sedaris most in his gestures, and timing, qualities of speech
Amy is a funny, funny woman. For me, her brother exemplifies boring.
Happy-Go-Lucky is very funny. He reads the audiobook, and tells jokes in one chapter. Perfect timing.
Great guest, Stephen
Although he’s not as well known as the average celebrity in America, he still a national treasure! Watching this interview reminded me how much I miss watching fresh live Stephen Colbert show. I specially think about that right now while the orange clown is on trial, so much buffoonery and disrespect to the court system, this would’ve been so great to see late night comics working with this material. Cheers to David Sedaris, his success is well earned
"Smart people learn from everything and everyone, average people from their experiences and stupid people already have all answers"
Socrates
Food for thought.
"stupid people already have the answers" is horrifyingly accurate in America. 54% of us read BELOW a sixth grade level. 59% of Republicans think that higher education is bad for you...
He's so great :)
My husband made me sleep on the couch so I wouldn't get it 😭 and then I got it anyways! 😭😂
😂😂😂
I bet he was more exhausted than you after birthing babies.
😂😂😂
The way he says “and I gave it to my boyfriend Hugh” 😂😂😂
I love this guy so dam much!😁
He is one of my favourite writers.
