Alphabet is my second full time job after being with my previous tech company for around 2 years. I feel like this company is spoiled by the existence of Moma. Moma is overall a good thing - it lets you look up information very quickly. But it also means that when doing tasks - 1) people expect you to figure out from Moma results alone 2) Byzantine Internal tools and methodologies get a lot of traction over open source alternative because they show up on Moma. This makes the on-ramp process at Google noticeably longer in my opinion compared to other companies. While in my last job, I felt comfortable making major contributions at around 6 months in tenure - in Alphabet it took me until 9 months despite me having MORE experience.
I did an internship at Amazon which was only 3 months. But since Amazon relies on Intellij, standard AWS, Git and other open source tools I used in college I felt that was enough time to gain a solid understanding.

Promotions would not put anyone at the top of the band. You simply move up by 6% with your base. Or go to the bottom of the next pay band. It depends on which is higher. His only way to make “top of the band” is to just interview elsewhere. But the economy is so bad right now, it’s not necessarily easy to job hop at the moment. Maybe it’s easier for him as Senior though.

I think 500k is crazy. When it comes to risk, nothing compares to civil engineering, (maybe there’s some CDC or scientists jobs that do - doctors of course, but they’re compensated for it) and seniors won’t dream to see 500k, I don’t think Vice Presidents do either - not sure about presidents but I’m sure they don’t see 500k/year in their lifetime lol - as a civvie, the field is unappreciated, underpaid, the risk is INSANE, and it just doesn’t add up unless you’re passionate about it. **edit** I also think SWEs/SDEs that deal with work that can immediately take people offline or screw something up for their entire company is a huge risk & they should be compensated well. But like is 500k not enough 🤣🤣

Hey man, started watching your videos yesterday - saw your sad day in the life... Have things improved since them or are you still feeling burnt out?
You mention a lot that you feel you're one of the weaker engineers, do you feel that could influence the hours you have to work or would you just be piled with more work if you was more efficient?
Do you personally have a tendency where you overcommit yourself to your work, I'd love to get some more insight (in future videos or a reply) on how you are as a person since I feel that could be really valuable to the viewer and could help people to decide whether they want to move into this field.
Thanks for showing us some real stuff regardless :)
I can't remember who said this but I feel everyone should hear it... If people are so happy with their jobs - why are they spending so much time preaching about how good they are on RUclips attempting to get monetisation there - be careful who you place your trust in; usually the raw brutal truth is more honest than an aesthetically pleasing set-up where you see the creator working less than 2 hours a day.

A degree from a top school is a huge help, but not a requirement. I barely graduated high school and dropped out of college. I’ve been at Google for 2.5 years. I’m my case, they focused on the impact of my project during my time as a contractor, and the feedback of my team and interviewers.
