the problem with modern wimpy kid is that each book tries to top the antics of the previous one, and they end up getting too unrealistic and losing a lot of the relatablility factor that the early books had. i think thats my main problem with the last few books

I thought the book was pretty good/decent. I wish Jeff really fleshed out the idea of the School shutting down though. I do kinda like the twist at the end where Greg goes to the bad school and Rowley goes to the good school (Originally it was the opposite) and then the students fail the test and now they have to go to the new school. For some reason I thought that was not going to happen. But in my opinion. The new Diary of a Wimpy kid book is a 6/10.

I really liked this one, really felt about Greg and was really chaotic. One thing I will say was,
I hated the ending. I loved where it was going and it was so exciting! But they literally redid EVERYTHING that they did in the book. I would've loved to see more books feature around Greg and his new life, but they just had to remove everything in this book. Legit all that changed was the name of the school. I'm guessing Jeff thought of it last minute to wrap up the book.

This one...I think they lost me.
First of all, there was barely any plot. Most of it was just Greg talking about changes that were going on at his school, and it didn't even get to the shutdown until midway through. And when it did get to it, they barely delivered on the book's premise. From the official synopsis, I would've expected to see Greg try to organize a campaign to keep his school open, but there was barely any of that.
It DID get kind of interesting at the end, where Greg went to a new school and got a girlfriend. But then a last-minute contrivance happened to just suddenly put everything back the way it was, and Greg's girlfriend dumped him. So what was even the point?
Plus, there was even more of the modern Wimpy Kid stupidity. There was a passage about a book series that the kids love but the parents hate-a joke that was recycled from Book 9. And they had a robot character. A freaking robot that was made principal at the end.🤦‍♂️
Another thing that bugged me was the "reveal" that Greg's middle school is called Larry Mack Middle School...even though for years we've known it to be Westmore Middle School. Yes, it was something that the movies added, and it wasn't said to be the school's name in the earlier books, but even taking that out of it, this is still weird. Why are we not hearing the name of Greg's school until the 18th book? Shouldn't it have been mentioned at least once before?
On the whole, I think this is a contender for worst in the series. Double Down and Big Shot were pretty bad, but No Brainer just might beat them to the bottom of the list. I'm not sure if I'll even bother with Book 19.

Well said, I completely agree with you, I don’t just hate the ending because it reset everything (although I hate that they did that as well) but also how it just reset things in a way that expects you to buy it. And I just don’t know this series anymore, what is all this crap? A robot being principal? Rodents infiltrating a school? TSA at a school? I know I’ll get some hate for this but I’d rather read Double Down than this again, at least it was somewhat grounded in reality and didn’t introduce anything too outlandish.

This book was good in my opinion. There were many things I liked. My favorite part was when Greg becoming a principal for a day, that was a lot of fun. I also enjoyed seeing more of his school as well and seeing how terrible it is as well as how horrible his principal was, however their were a lot of things I didn’t like. I hated how Frank, Susan, Manny, Rodrick, And Rowley all took a backseat at once this time around. I’m fine with some of the other supporting characters having a small role, but not all at the same time. I also didn’t like how their were so many side stories happening all at once. The main story of the school closing down was pushed aside and barely focused on until towards the end of the book. But yeah I still like this book, but I do think it’s pretty weak compared to other books in the series. 7/10 good but not great.

good review crow. the thing i didn't really like about this book was just a tad bit unrealistic with some of the sideplots were like the karen parents who were against the commando crocodile comics and the principal straight up acting like mr. krabs, coming up with new schemes to save/make more money. in what world would an american school just turn off electricity for half of its classrooms and allow cockroaches to roam around the floors. don't get me started on the "high flyer's club", no school would offer a paid membership to students to get out of doing schoolwork lol. its kinda sad to see how greg's middle school sucked up to big corporations to the point where you couldn't even bring another brand of chips to school. this book kinda reminded me of wrecking ball where greg's family was about to move out into a new house but then everything fell apart at the end and we're back to square one. the same thing happened in this book except he's back at this old middle school. a change of setting would've been nice for once, considering how long this series has gone on for, but it seems like jeff kinney doesn't want greg to win in life. he gets a girlfriend finally and becomes popular just for sophie to break up with him at the end and gets bullied again. it just seems like a missed opportunity. i will keep reading the books though as long as they're made.

From my personal experience, the book was kinda boring at first, but when they actually started talking about the school ending it started getting pretty interesting. I like the callback to the first picture of the first book in this book when the school reopens again, pretty nice. I also liked how they reversed the schools for Rowley and Greg, so Jeff drew two pictures showing the switch, that was pretty funny. I also liked how when the school closed, Mr. Bottoms did the "WOOHOO!" on the car again, like during Rodrick's years with Mr. Bottoms as well. Just like the references and the callbacks in the book overall.
In my opinion, we didn't get much from Rowley other than he is going to another school from Greg and is getting a lot of private tutors so he can't hangout with Greg, in fact, he didn't actually say much too.
The pacing was okay, but I think if we just cut out the pages where the school is slowly being broken down and just go to the part where the school announces it's being closed, then that would've been better.
The comedy was good, not gonna lie. The part where even the bot janitor was asking for any jobs because the school is closing was pretty funny.
Since this book takes place in Greg's middle school, we could've seen many recurring characters, such as Fregley, Holly, Chirag or heck, even the Cheese Touch. Maybe even a new school play or something, even a musical, to maybe put more light to Greg's good singing as shown in the movie. (I'm not sure which one, but I think it's the first one.)
Overall, it's okay, but definitely a lot of missed opportunities and potential, 6/10.

    Spoilers
I was really expecting the older characters to show their faces like Holly, Patty, and Chirag, but unfortunately they were nowhere to be seen (aside from Mr. Gupta I guess? But he had a different design in Rodrick Rules page 74). Also, I don't know, to me it felt like it was so over the top with the school crumbling to the point where it wasn't realistic. In the older books, Greg was the one causing problems, in this one things were just crumbling around him. It also felt like Jeff was really trying to stretch everything as much as he could, but I could be wrong. I also felt like the character designs felt a little samey because of the noses. The girls felt the weirdest because that's not usually how Greg draws them aside from the ones he doesn't like, like Ruby Bird. Vice Principal Roy is also only mentioned ONCE and we don't even see a picture of him. This strikes as very odd because I feel like he'd play a major role in the book. Cabin Fever for example uses him super well. I hate to feel so nitpicky but I can't help but notice all these things and question them a little. I liked the book, but it felt super off to me like it's not the world I know.
also not to sound like a grammar nazi but there were a million wrong ways to start a sentence in that book lol

    • @rexskywalker3783
      @rexskywalker3783 8 месяцев назад +2

This was probably my least favorite of the books. Jeff has really jumped the shark with these things to the point of where they aren’t relatable or realistic at all. I also really wished that Greg ended up together with his girlfriend for a while instead of having it last about 5 pages.

No Brainer much like Double Down before it epitomizes everything wrong with the later Wimpy Kid books.
    1. Not much of note happens until the very end.
    2. Unrealistic elements that make the books feel less like an average believable middle school kid's life experiences and more like National Lampoon lite.
    3. Greg is STILL in middle school somehow after all these years along with his best friend Rowley.

To be honest, Jeff’s books don’t have the same touch they used to, when I’ve read the more recent books, it feels like there is no storyline. It’s just Greg telling a bunch of chaos like 6 months worth of events happen in 4 days. Back then, the books weren’t just based on one specific thing, in Diper Overload, clearly the entire book is just about Rodrick’s band. Back then, the books felt more so like they were following a story line. One day we’d hear about Greg joining something. Next we’d hear about his problems & chaos that comes with it. Then later in the book whether it was shortly after or a while after, we would hear that he quit or something like that. Nowadays that scenario just looks like this: I joined this activity/team, here’s the problem, so I quit it. It’s basically like he’s not telling us what’s going on while it’s going on, more so that he is telling us everything that happens, months after it happens.
