I got a Nordstrom Gift Card for $100 about 2 years ago. The only thing I did differently was, I had to call the service department for a minor issue. Then about 4 months later a gift. I do spend quite a bit on my Amex platinum but maybe just the call triggered it. Other than that no other gifts.

It just showed up as a random statement credit. Spend was about $100k that year. Pretty meager gift, but I never asked for it, so it was a pleasant surprise.
I think most of these gifts are for women. I've gotten a $150 APM Monaco voucher which pretty much only sells female jewelry. But it makes for a good gift without not actually spending anything.
AMEX has been kind to me. When I asked to book a Valentine’s Day Dinner, they made it happen, even though on the first day they couldn’t book it right away. And then they gave me 100K for my signup bonus. I’m enjoying AMEX so far!

And as for the tickets Amex buys them for these events and then sells them off to customers. So likely they had a surplus and its better to give them to customers rather then let them go unused.

I called them to get tickets to a The Houston Rodeo performance that I was going to get on StubHub and it actually was more expensive for the same seats on AmEx than StubHub.. Had to wait a long time on the phoneto find that out.

I was beginning to fall in love with Amex and out of it with Chase until this past Friday. I hit the 5k spend on the Platinum and when I called to check on points - found out they are not going to award me 75k because of the number of award cards I have which were only two at the time. Delta Gold and Amex Everday - which I still have and use. The rep I spoke with is putting in a dispute because system did not tell why when i never had the Platinum card and this was a targeted offer. They also issued me the Gold and Hilton Aspire 4 days later and I am getting 50k & 150k from those target offer. Sebby, do you have any advice or data points to help me?
I think they gave it to you as a gift assuming you'd buy your wife something for Christmas with it I'm just guessing also I noticed the restaurants where you get $10 off don't exist in Arizona except for GrubHub

Amex is great for snagging restaurant reservations. If they can't do it, they usually follow up with a few good alternatives.
