As a Platinum Marriott Member who earned through Marriott and Starwoods stays, I feel Gold is enough, giving both Marriott Platinum and Hilton Diamond to cardholders may need a card with a $850+ minimum annual fee and still require a couple nights stayed or it would be the same problem as many airlines who have packed lounges and less quality/quiet.

If the annual fee is a concern, then you don't need an Amex Platinum. People who would miss $700 bucks a year should be applying for lower-level cards that will better suit their lifestyle. It's 60 bucks a month. That's a cheap internet connection these days.
