Great tutorial.... It's time to bust out the Classical, change the strings, oil her up and get to business.... 6:56 LOL.... Dominic once called it the "chord from hell"...
Play it over and over and over then. If you fingers are hurting, it’s because you haven’t worked enough on stretch chords in the past. Like anything, it gets easier as you do it more and eventually, you’ll forget it was difficult for you 😉
If you’ve been playing long it won’t take long. But also, finger picked stuff like this is great to learn. You learn more of the mechanics; what’s going on. Tho it seems daunting it really isn’t. That’s the secret to finger picked stuff, in a lot of ways it’s easier. I learned this song in about half a day, not perfect, and I did it mostly by ear. Took a week of obsessing but I nailed it. But that comes with time and patience. I’m here because I wanted to make sure I’m dead on. That’s the thing with guitar. It’s all being patient and just sticking to it. The song will be in your league one day, before you even realize it.
I've been on this for about 10 days. An hour a day mostly. Some notes throughout don't ring out like I want yet. I am determined to be patient and build muscle memory. I know it takes time after time of revisiting it. It's a beast! Playing it slowly as I can stand, then trying full tempo too much like we all do. Thank you for the great lesson. Making my guitar playing better for sure. MY HAND HURTS in a good way!
Hello mate, i've never played guitare myself and really wanna start by this fabulous song. It probably is my most favourite song of all time and I want to know how to play it. I started like 1 hour ago and my wrist hurt for sure. But it is really amazing to see how you can make a guitare sing in just an hour. I hope you did manage to learn it Have a good day
Do you have any advice? For the first chord when I put my first thinger on the 6 on the G string, the furtherst I can get my pinky is just barely the 9 on the B
Honestly, I think it was easier for me, because I play lots of bossa nova and mpb, which usually has lots of these crazy chords and positions that envolves a hard stretch. I actually advise any starting guitar player, even the ones who are not from Brasil and don't like this genre to check it out, it's great for learning new techniques, use of the thumb, finding new chords, and changing from to weird positions on the guitar.
Damn! I’m 59 and you have brought me back into playing and have not stoped for going on 2years! You have inspired me and can not thank you enough! Even purchased a new Taylor 214 ce and lookin at a 324ce or 524ce once I’m able! You are, in my opinion the best player/instructor on RUclips! Thank you!!
You know what you did? You inspired me to start playing again after about 20 years of abstinence. The guy who wrote this piece is a genius, and so are you, breaking this down in an understandable way. I probably won't master this but as you said it is a fantastic workout. Thank you so much!
EXCELLENT - why would anyone put a thumbs down - beats me - obviously take offence at someone playing really well ? - I've played over 50 years professionally - this guy never deserves a thumbs down
I find it awesome that Dominic Miller actually wrote this piece for the purpose of practice and when Sting heard it he insisted they make it into an actual song.
I am so happy that you have finally figured out how to provide TABs for your lessons. These make a huge difference and will add to your popularity! Yea!!!
So creepy weird and coincidental that he posted the lesson for this song when I literally was just listening to it yesterday and wanted to learn how to play it. 😳
it's an amazing guitar part. you can see the stevie ray vaughan influence, strangely. The Lenny chord is in there and all those stretches and unresolved chords, especially at the end, are like Riviera Paradise. Always loved this song, it's on another level.
Its taken nearly 3 weeks but I've just about got this memorised, but its a slog. I just have to keep practising. THANK YOU so much for this lesson. Its incredibly valuable and of course the piece is just beautiful so well worth the effort.
One of my most favorite songs and again the best tutorial of it by far! Man since I've found you on Yt I no longer look for any other instructors, to me you're non-comparable to others! Many many thanks!!
You played this so nice and cleanly and it really highlights what a stunning little bit of guitar work it is. Sounds simple but is actually complex in it's make up and twists and turns all over the place.
Man …..I don't need to tell you about the difference a high quality instrument and a proper setup makes in terms of playability. On my cheap guitar, I cannot afford to relax my pinky a bit and allow it to rest closer to the middle of the fret like he does here and still produce a decent tone. Because I'm forced to play every note as close as possible to the fret wire, those finger twisters he talks about are incredibly difficult to pull off and sound relatively clean. Same applies for the barring parts. That being said, what an incredible composition by Dominic Miller though! And what a great lesson to help students learn such an iconic tune! Despite the obvious hindrances, I was able to learn the basics of the tune in a few hours. In a few days time I was able to play the majority of the song and sing along with it!
Thank you so much for your lessons on here, they are absolutely fantastic! I worked on your "I Don't know why" lesson first for at least a month and am starting to slowly get there now, not sure how long this one will take but it's been a long time I wanted to play this so I'm sure I'll get there with your superb break downs! First of all, and this is my first comment on one of your videos and long overdue, I want to say your videos are amazing and you are amazing. Keep doing what you’re doing. You’re playing is terrific but the talk track including some history on the song/guitarist and insights is equally excellent. I’ve been learning this great song and want to say i discovered another option on how to play the “want to make you give up chord”. As im playing in that chord shape, i start off just like you but then I slide my pointer finger up a fret to get that hard to reach note on the high E string without moving anything else and then play the last note on the B string.
