- Dominic Miller used his Yairi Torres nylon-string with maple back and sides and D'Addario strings to play a bit of "Shape of My Heart," a song he co-wrote with Sting. Dominic’s new album, Silent Light, is featured in the September issue of Vintage Guitar. READ NOW!!! goo.gl/H3iUGx
I used to share a table at an Italian restaurant in Battersea with Dominic. Once I asked him what he did for a living and he said he played the guitar and left it there. It wasn't until he offered me tickets to hear Sting at Albert Hall that, when I showed up, I realized that, yes he played the guitar (for Sting). That is how humble a person he is.
Thank you so much for sharing your magical story. You never know who you might be talking to! 😊
Wao, thanks for the story
WOW! You just made my day me friend!
don't know why he should show off iTs sTinG nOt EmiNeM😂🤣
Amazing story!
I recently went to a Sting concert (May 2022). I sat front row right in front of Dominic. I'd never seen or heard of him. I ended up spending most of the show watching him. He noticed and gave me his pick at the end of the show. What a class act and incredible musician.
Thank you for this kind story. I appreciate it very much!
You're so lucky! Very very lucky! I envy you
This is what the fans want, a tutorial from the original artists himself, so kind and I salute you sir
yep
Gio absolutely 👍
Judging by the amount of dislikes, Dominic's version isn't authentic enough. LOL
Exactly. WTF lol
naah. those dislikes are just a simple proof of 136 idiot exist here as well..
This is actually dope that the artist cares enough to put out his OWN video on how it's actually played.
Yes, its really nice of him to do this. BTW, if you like this sort of thing, James Taylor has put out a really detailed free video showing closeups of both hands playing "Carolina on my mind", and a bunch of others on how he does his nails, etc. Really great stuff from the artist himself. .
Brian May is doing it on his instagram channel!
because hes tired of it getting played wrong..
That's the first time I listen to Dominic Miller. What a nice guy.
Dominic, your playing is so delightful. Embellishing Sting like Alun Davies did for Cat Stevens. A massive contribution..
thanks
Can't believe he played BWV 997 Prelude!!! I love that piece so much I always play it as a warmup. Thanks Mr. Miller! :D
The fact that he recognized the engineering part of musical architecture, just made my day. Cheers.
Love how he casually started playing Bach perfectly like it was nothing. Gotta respect how humbly this man teaches. Much love sir :’)
Etcetera…!!
"Bach is... scales with personality." - Dominic MIller
Such an eloquently soft-spoken expressive man and a wonderful guitarist/musician! 🍷🍷🎸🎸
This is the song my wife and I fell in love to... driving to Cedar Key on maybe our third date. Fate took her from me in February at only 51 and learning how to play this song properly has been real therapy. Thank you for posting the authentic chords Dominic.
So sorry man..my wife means the world to me, she's been here through thick & thin. I hope you're doing okay & treasure the great times you had w her.
She should had done as she was told
Except of following DA other's
That's right
Cause if you don't God will give it to someone else
I read in an interview with Dominic that "The Shape of My Heart" came from a simple warm-up exercise when he was starting a practice session with Sting. When Sting heard it he said "wait" and went for a walk and came back with the lyrics. Wow. True talent and genius rolled into one. Thank you Dominic for postting these inspirations!
Just when you thought that the real playing of "Shape" was pure gold, along comes the most truthful and illuminating insight into the unfathomable process of writing a song. Long live Dominic Miller! Cheers from Argentina.
He was born in argentina funny enough
Es Argentino
Finally had a chance to see the master himself at Sting’s concert a few days back here in Canada. For the first 10 mins of the concert I didn’t realise it was him playing the guitar next to Sting because I wasn’t in the first row. Such a great musician.
Amazing!
50 years after becoming acquainted with guitar I am now becoming familiar with it. I wish I had begun learning in earnest earlier. I deeply appreciate this video.
No kidding. I’ve noodled aimlessly for decades, just finding now inspiration for actually playing from great RUclipsrs. Better late than never brother
I can‘t count how many times I‘ve watched this over the past years. Still one of my absolute favourite videos on RUclips of all time. Dominic, you‘re an absolute legend and such a great bloke. What you teach us has throughly changed my approach on how I play guitar. Thank you.
This video/tutorial from Dominic is priceless. " I practice hyper slow so I can focus on the sound" I could listen to this master talk about guitar and music all day long. Play on Dominic
So modest and such a great musician. Maybe not a household name, but absolutely one of the best guitar players out there.
Genius man. The importance of practice slowly, precisely and focus on clean sound is everything. Most guitarists don't do that. They try to get faster and faster and the listener is not willing to follow and enjoy the music with it's sound melody.
My cello teacher insisted I practice Bach starting at quarter speed. He would not let me go any faster until he thought I was good at it. I was far too young, did not understand why was he torturing me. Lots of years later.... youknow.... darn.
Among a sea of guitarists on the internet that can make the art sound so confusing , this bloke was able to express his art so clear, humble and beautiful. Real talent is like a drug, one of the good one's!
I've played at playing guitar for 30 years. Only now as an adult have I really started to understand it musically. It is so deeply gratifying and encouraging to hear a true master speak about the writing process that I can identify with. Almost a little like Bob Ross, "Well that was a happy accident!" I have felt that compulsion to complete the circle so strong lately as I play, thank you sir for your insights! I have seen you perform live and it forever changed my perception of how the guitar enhances the music.
Yep. Thats most of us. One day at a time. ❤
This song is the most beautiful melody ever, it brings me to my knees, thank you and Sting for creating this heavenly tune!!
10:10 minutes that add meaning to my life. Kind regards to you Dominic
"scales with beauty" . . . if only every guitar teacher and tutor thought along those lines.
He should be way more known in Argentina, proud of being his compatriot!
😊
This melody is the most moving one I’ve heard. Its complexity is beautiful and the emotional journey tugs at the heart strings.
Dominic, you're a real star, superb musician and so modest and generous....
Got a lot out of this! Such a talented person
One of my favourite guitarist.. and one of underrated guitarist .. listening to his work on Sting’s album the soul caged is just outstanding ! What a Finest guitarist ..
A good reason Dominic has been with Sting for soooo many years. Legend
This is a rare glimpse into the mind of a genius artist, beautifully articulated for us to enjoy and cogitate on!
Dominic's talk after his playing is truly a priceless reflection on composing music. I can so much relate to it - "solving a puzzle", "closing the circle" - so well put! And hearing it directly from Dominic, who is such an accomplished composer, is just so very special. Thank you!
Oh my, this video was overwhelmingly pleasant to listen to
What a master musician, imagine playing with sting for 28 years.
Dominic Miller's wise words and advice are such a welcome respite from this whole macho approach that wants the guitar a lethal weapon and not an instrument to touch the soul oh and his humbleness makes him even more endearing to boot (try not to be full of yourself after playing guitar with Sting for 1/3 of a century). No wonder then he is a musician's musician of the highest order, thank you Dominic.
Your talking to yourself but then over 800,000 are listening! The guitar for Shape of My Heart is gorgeous, thank you for sharing.
2 million and counting 😊
One of my favorite guitarists of all time. Such a class act with an insightful presence into the creative process. Well done mate.
I'm so glad I watched this. What a great lesson.
Love Dominic Miller. He's one of the few contemporary pop/rock artists to have serious classical guitar background/chops and to bring that sensibility into pieces, with "Shape of My Heart" being the most famous example.
Wonderful and highly experienced performance musician with a classical guitar background . Every word is worth paying close attention to.
Dominic Miller is one of the finest guitar players in the world. I've been a fan of his since my early teenage days, still listen to him with the very same enthusiasm today.
As we all build our legacies, generous giving of ones time as Dominic does here will be everlasting.
Dominic is such an enigmatic guitarist and personality. I can't help but be captivated by his words.
Top bloke,a super humble man,and a uniquely sounding and quality musician, always a pleasure.
3 Or 4 years, I have met Dominic Miller in the hotel I was working in Paris. I thanked him for this beautiful song, maybe the most beautiful melody in my opinion. I told him I was trying to learn it but there were too different versions on the net and can't know which one is the best. He told me very humbly that he might shoot a video to explain by himself.
And not even 6 month after I found this video on RUclips...
Thanks Dominic, I am glad to think that we all can watch this video a bit thanks to me
Johann Sebastian Bach. Suite in C Minor, BWV 997 (for guitar in A Minor).
First Preludium
Second Suite
THANK YOU !!!!
Thank you!
sorry, do you know maybe where to find tabs for it? I'm looking but it's not so easy for me
Class act and a quality dude…the world would benefit with more Dominic Millers in it. How has it taken 6 years for this to show up in my feed?!? Love his work and this video captures the essence of why I play guitar - to be someone different and better than myself - to be like: Dominic Miller. Great Video, immediate playlist-save.
He is absolute music genius, and this is more than master class, advice or something. This is for everyone who need to create something🙏
True.
In my opinion... it is great to share your knowledge, it’s like leaving your legacy to someone behind for them to continue to learn and keep it alive! That is what I called “wisdom of legacy”.
0:12 "that's not the shape of my hand" :) Great video, great song. It looks so simple when he plays it... thank you Dominic.
keep practicing and you will eventually be able to do it. What worked for me was positioning the first three fingers higher on the fret. Then the pinky gets positioned slightly higher, but it still is able to press the string enough.
this is the first time I have seen Dominic in person. I have seen him along side Sting for years and been inspired by his performances and commitment!! What a lovely guy.
Just the rhythm of your fingers touching and muting the strings gives this incredible rolling 16th note feel that I’ve always heard in the song but misinterpreted as actual notes. It’s incredible and grooves sooo much harder! Thank you for sharing this! I’ve been coming back to it periodically for the past couple years or so to shed. Your playing is immensely inspiring.
"the thing about fashion, is that it goes out of fashion very quickly too" -Dominic Miller
wow... that slow practicing is the ultimate pro tip you rarely hear, teaches you to slow down time. this is a truly amazing being, just getting to know him
Great philosophy on music I found your words very inspiring. Thank you Dominic and best wishes for your tour.
Richard Peej a
Merci pour les bons conseils
Thank you Dom. I came to plying the guitar late in life, 58 years old, so i had a lot of catch up to do. Your philosophy to practice is very inspiring. I am going to implement that from to day. Each note to be as perfect as the one before and the one to follow. It's about the sound. Simple but yet so fundamentally true.
I don't know why, I find this video extremely peaceful. I watched it multiple times last few weeks and I think I'll keep doing that.
This is brilliant!! Dom has the knowledge, passion, technique, and humor. He's an amazing musician who's lived life, and him sharing his experiences is priceless!!
How totally inspiring! Thank you so much Dominic, what a privilege to have a lesson with you!
The tone quality is really everything whenever the acoustic instrument is involved, that’s true. It’s much more important than anything else indeed. Mistr Miller seems to be a humble person and a great musician. Thank you very much.
Meaningful class! beautiful playing!
@purgesvideo
Domic is an amazing accompniast. Notice how he colours the space in which Stings songs lend themselves. Accompanyment is a very real skill that Dominic has in spades. A real talent and nice geezer 😊
One of my favourite songs and Dom is a genius! Thank you for creating this song and so many others
Really nice to listen to someone who who really enjoys and can articulate something that they love.
It sounds boring but to be an interesting person is really something.
Awesome song, awesome arrangement, awesome player
Lovely ... Just Lovely. Thank You Dominic!
Loved this video. I can hear the shape of my heart riff all day. It is a piece of art for sure. Loved his honesty and humility.
Wonderful discussion on composing and he's right it begins and ends with Bach
It's amazing that an artist like him is teaching us his most iconic song. Yet, 316 people decide to dislike the video. The're stupid
That was the most spiritual 10 minutes i spent on youtube. thank you Dominic. live long.
This is a great insight on how amazing guitarist like Dominic go about playing and writing music. I have always love his style of playing Dominic plays from the heart and is one with the guitar. Sting is also incredible but his still very lucky to have such a musician of this high standard to play alongside.
As all really gifted people, Dominic is a nice and humble guy! was incredible to hear about music from a great guitar composer!
Hi Dominic, I have never heard you talk before, You seem very down to hearth.
Thank you for sharing those tips. I caught a couple of things I my self was playing wrong.
I always enjoy the cleanness of your guitar fingerings. Your classical sounds amazing and you make it look so smooth and easy.
Thank you for sharing your amazing talent with us.
Beautiful sound
Hello Ruth,
How're you doing?
Your comments caught my attention and that is why I am reaching out to you.
Your fan love for me warms my heart, Thank you!
It's nice meeting you here.
i remember where i was so many years ago when i first heard this guitar masterpiece. It was one big reason why i picked up the guitar. I spent hours trying to get this heavenly melody played properly. You are a true inspiration.. and the fact that you are so humble and grounded makes me love you even more. thank you for bringing such a wonderful piece of music into the world.. you are truly fantastic to say the least..
Shape of my heart is absolutely beautiful. I love that song! I could actually just listen to that instrumental version and of course the man Sting. 🙂❤️🇹🇹
Recently watched an interview with Sting and Dominic Miller on RUclips. As I remember the interview was in New York and Sting had a dental appointment before the interview At first I was questioning why Dominic Miller was with Sting for the interview. I must admit I was not a Sting fan...only because I knew little about his history. Then I became a huge Sting fan.....and after the interview I watched I was introduced to Dominic Miller....and know why they were together for the interview. It is obvious that Sting attributes his success to Dominic Miller as they have been together for decades. In that interview it was apparent that Dominic Miller is articulate, intelligent and a true artist always challenging his craft. Sting also is in that same category,, Having been self-turned on to Sting (and Dominic MIller's music)....I had the great luck and pleasure to find Sting Live Berlin on RUclips....one of the best concerts I have had the opportunity to view. Of course, playing to the left of Sting was Dominic Miller....a true perfectionist of his musical career...and someone who continues to explore his craft as witnessed in this video.
Hi Dominic - Please start a channel where you play Bach "for hours" - I guarantee it would have tens of thousands of views. Absolutely beautiful.
Count me in.
Me too.

I was thinking the same thing as Dominic was playing Bach.
Btw what's the name of the piece of music he plays at 3:37 ???
It's beautiful.
I don't know if I would enjoy Sting's music without Dominic! He's the icing on the cake!
3:03 "The other thing I like to do is practice Bach... when I was learning... teachers I had recommended doing scales & arpeggios & I kind of rebelled against that, didn't like doing it... in fact I was probably quite lazy or something... the solution for me was to play Bach... because Bach is full of scales, except that it's scales with personality & beauty."
I was wondering if Shape of My Heart was based on Bach... Has Dominic ever commented on whether that's the case? Or has anyone found a piece it's related to?
Dominic seems like a great guy. I just watched an hour video of he and Sting. I really appreciate this video, and thank you Dominic!
Thank you Dominic for this. Very interesting to hear about your processes of composing and warming up. You are not only an incredible guitar player but a player that composes beautiful music.
Well, this man comes across as down-to-earth and humble. That's a good pairing for a talented musician because, then, the music will choose you to flow through.
Thank you Dominic for imparting your wisdom.
This beautiful piece is not easy to play on guitar. Full of difficult finger stretches and chord shapes for the fingerboard. Much easier on the piano, lyrical and pianistic with all black notes for that G#min b13 directly under your fingers. Thanks Dominic Miller for a beautiful composition and sharing your helpful comments.👏👍
Sorry G#min 7 (add 11)...
I've heard very good guitarists all my life, but Dominic Miller is the best of the best. He gives me chills and peace and makes me dream about Places. I do Love Music, regret so much not learning how to play an instrument He lets me have the privilege of listening to him!!!!!!!!!!.
Love Dominics playing and song writing! He inspires me to play better.
this was brilliant..
i wonder how many times did he ask himself _ what if i made a quick video on YT?.. before he actually resolved to doing it.
i’m really glad he ended up doing it.
It serves to show that a really honest video..very pure, in its intention, and tone of altruistic force
Só truthful..
What a cool guy. i knew he was talented..and great, as he and Sting would have not been touring together for so long..if they weren’t both really good, and honoring of their friendship..and passion for music.
but , it’s actually different..seeing it for ourselves.as we watch his sharing.
thanks for posting.
cheers
That's why Sting likes him so much, Dominic is a genuine person and sting thrives amongst genuine people and genuine feelings.
Can’t get enough of this! Thank you so much, Dominic! You made it look and sound so simple…when I tried it, ‘twas really painful but absolutely rewarding! Cheers!
"Recognize when you have a good idea" @ 7:40 . So much wisdom in that statement. A lot of times when we sit around and just churn thru the songs we've played for decades ..... bored , but playing etc....
these little spark of ideas light up. Thing is , you've got to be conscious of it. Listen with diff. ears. Hard than it sounds , and by no means do I compare myself with him. Funny how our brains work like that : like you can "play" a guitar, but you literally may just be painting by numbers, so to speak. The real "playing" of guitar is not premeditated song structure, but loose , inspired , but focused playing - in the moment.
This gives me chills. What a gorgeous, haunting progression. Great inspirational lesson as well. Thank you!
Shape of my Heart, one of my very favorite tunes of all time. Brilliantly put together. Thank you for the lesson and the insight!
Thank you Dominic.
My RnR after my performances was watching movies and last nite "LEON" came around and so does the Shape Of My Heart. The movie touches my heart n that song make sense.... now it makes me want to play it.
What a Lovely soul. He is probably.my favorite guitar player.
I am going to see him live one day.
I bet he would be great to sit and have a coffee or tea with.❤
Just started learning guitar and am a fan of Sting , too...I found this video by chance and like to listen to his advices ...Thank you so much for sharing !!!
I had asked musician to play shape of my heart on my dad's funeral. It means so much to me ❤
Thanks Dominic for taking the time to pass some tips to budding guitarists. this means everything to us amateurs and I will go get your new Cd as a thanks for you showing a little of your expertise to help others. Cheers.
Beautiful thank you so much and sharing your guitar playing philosophy
"Bach is full of scales except that it's scales with personality and beauty really" 3:26
Uematsu also. e.g . Prelude
I could listen to him all day talking about his approach to music. So refreshing in these times of mindless trendy music.
Such a wonderful man and top-notch musician! Thank you for this insight! It is precious to hear your thoughts and theories.
