Marc does some of the best videos around. He is clear. Concise. His vids are always a great length. What he did with the transient shaper here was invaluable. He made that whole kit get bigger but it felt bigger and didn’t just sound like he turned it up. He injected tone into it. Amazing. Thanks
@@Producelikeapro it creates a “map”off all the samples in a folder and groups similar timbres of each type of sample. For example, fat compressed EDM kicks are together and the kicks get more dynamic and natural as you get further away. Hovering over the sample plays it back automatically.
To adjust the transients perception touch view curves and play around with the velocity curves. This has been my go to technique for shaping drum ambiance and tone for quite some time. Hip hip hooray for Trigger2 Platinum for sure!
When Mr. Nelson was talking about ambient sounds, I starting thinking of a short shimmer effect. Like if shimmer and slap back had a baby. I tinker with mixing and I use Addictive Drums 2. With that plug-in, I can add triggers to the kick and snare by adding pre-made triggers or adding another bass drum or snare. It would be awesome to study under Mr. Nelson. So far digging all his videos. Like the sweater, too. Happy New Year, y'all.
You're a legend Marc!! Just backed up that my idea's correct! I've been using trigger a lot lately purely to add, weight or attack & it's actually incredible tucked in a little. Trigger likes to add latency though so it's cool to print them as an audio file, blended or each sample - Gives me more power. Transient by ACME is a fantastic free transient designer
Been waiting to get Trigger 2 - had been using "Texture" - a similar plugin for a while. Just picked up Trigger 2 through Loot Audio with a 5% discount for just about $39 - seems well-worth it.
Just used Trigger2 today for first mix of a live recording. So nice. Definitely will also be looking to use within Live Professor for a live mix off a Behringer X32.
Love all of your videos, but i don't agree on this one. Being a professional drummer myself, I think that those resonances you've added are exactly what most of the drummers try to avoid. I understand you were missing something, but I very much prefer to hear enhanced drums from reverbs, or rooms, or parallel distortion, or saturation, like Radiohead kind of style drums, just to mention one name. I feel the additions you've made both on kick and snare made the superbly tracked drums sound a bit cheap. With all due respect for your incredible skills.
@@Producelikeapro Ahah, I started having a beard during covid, "why should I shave ? We don't even see it with the mask...". And I ended up getting used to it and still wear the beard :D Let us open a youtube vote for Marc long hair back :P
I don't have Trigger, but I use Slate Drums 5.5. I just drag the kick and snare audio tracks and Pro Tools converts to MIDI. I still have to go in and delete any hits picked up by the bleed, but it's not too tedious. Even if you don't want to use sample enhancement for drums, just using a snare sample to trigger the reverb is useful. You don't have to deal with the bleed from the OH going into the reverb. Makes it easier to shape the sound of the verb.
Great video! The results sound amazing, but I wonder at times if the live acoustic recording is even necessary? If you’re using live drums to capture the performance, then triggering samples, can’t we just skip the complexity of mic’ing a full kit?
When you record, always sound diferent. To my taste, i don't like library cymbals and if you record more instruments in the same room than the drums, I feel the song have a more cohesive sound and ambience
Hey Marc what Camera and Lens are you using because the colors just look great, the skin tones and bokeh are perfect. Inquiring minds like me want to know!! Also here is a little secret tool for drums the Fuse Audio Labs DrumsSSX which will allow you to do all kinds of powerful things to drums and accomplish almost everything you were doing with one tool. You might like it to streamline your drum workflow!
With programed drums, I'll try different 'kits' for the room reverb, IK Multimedia MODO Drums does that job wonderfully! Waves Abbey Rd consoles great for parallel compression/EQ Trash track!
"Lets focus on that snare sound now" -- I was thinking before he said that,..."that snare sounds awesome". Lol....but it can be more awesome,.....obviously.
Marc, check out Drum Replacer by UVI!! The best trigger app BY FAR + it lets you host ANY VST instrument inside (so you can load ANY Kontakt, Superior Drummer, Slate Drums, etc library and use your favourite sounds! It has the most advanced and smartest trigger/bleed tech + all the tools you need to phase align samples and more! I never looked back! A game changer!! It also includes a very good editor for layered samples as well.
CLA Drums...because I have no clue what im doing! As a hobbyist who uses cheap mics and a whatever empty space I can find to record in - Im still struggling to balance my mics never mind meta level processing 🙈
Average listeners wonder why anyone spends this amount of time on a snare. I know, but almost no one else discerns this level of detail on a snare, but it does sound great.
As a hobby metal drummer who came to edrums I have to state with respect to "sampling is cheating": I mean ... ok. From the musicians (drummers) point of view, it is ... if you program the finest beats awsome chops that you can not play in a real live perfomance. From the engineers point of view definitely not! I mean you got awsome drums sets in an awsome studio with outstanding mics and equipment recorded by an experienced engineer. And yeah ... more options. Like always recording the raw signal of a guitar and then reamping it. It the same! So, I would state, that - as a hobby, semipro drummer, you will never ever have the sound of a perfect recorded drumset like that I have here with my creepy edrums set. Hahaha! 🙂 Do you? Dude, it so much (more) fun to use these edrums and enjoy the every single hit. Really. Ha. So, at least the "Making-of"s of Toontracks libraries suggest that the whole team put so much love and enthusiasm and musical life blood into these things ... Together with a short story of a certain studio, mic or console... They got me! That might by just marketing but... I am convinced! I love using sampling libraries!
great intro to your idea, but i would really love a more hands on example. will watch again, but when you say instead of just placing it, did you mean automating it witht the trigger or were you referencing something on the application of this concept that i didn't pick up on? Thanks either way i'm just starting to learn how much goes into quality/interesting drums.
Any recommendations on a good, Fleetwood-type snare? I find it difficult to find good, deep 70s-ish snare samples. Henley, Fleetwood, disco, Bee Gees, etc.
When doing an A/B it drives me crazy when the narrator announces in….out….back in. Totally throws the ears off. The in/out labeling on the screen is all you need.
What are your go-to plugins for mixing drums? Let me know below!
Newfangled Audio Soft Clipper
Plug and Mix " Clarisonix is an easy shaper for kick and snare. Adds that final touch to the sound.
Slate Trigger, FF Q3, SSL 4K Bus comp or other vintage compressor model
I've never managed to get my desired sound out of Transient Shaper but I will now go back and try again!

Atlas 2 is my go to for finding drums. You can browse thousands of samples in a few seconds and find similar sounds.
Fantastic! Thousands of Samples sounds a lot though, haha. Are you able to get to a sound you need quickly?

But WHAT is that thing that Andy Wallace does SO well? I know he has a trigger that triggers the reverb, but his kicks “bloom” so unbelievably well.
This Marc - and his telescopic hearing!
