I don't even play drums, and I can't relate to 90% of what you're saying, yet I find your videos endlessly entertaining! Your channel deserves way more recognition - it's awesome!
It's funny cause you're right about how they would record drums first and then cymbals, but now you'll have other youtubers trying to figure how was someone able to play the beat with a hi hat, snare, and cymbal at same time. They'll literally say stuff like, "they used 3 sticks." 🤭
Dude you are quite literally so good at recording drums you should be running a big studio in LA ASAP. Crazy good man. And not just recording but playing too, SHESHHHHH
Sounds sick, this was absolutely worth the wait. Phil Collins actually recorded In The Air Tonight using an SSL talkback mic, which is what gave the drums that incredibly compressed sound. Love it!
yaaaaaay! Thanks! Yeah, there's a cool interview Warren Huart does with Hugh Padgham where he explains the whole thing. What a happy accident/discovery that was!
Everybody always mentioned In The Air Tonight for obvious reasons. But one of my personal favorite Phil Collins gated drums moment is from the Genesis song Dreaming While You Sleep. As well as Mama
Seeing how drums were recorded in 3 separate drums, I all of a sudden do not feel that bad that I record my finger drumming with tom/snare first, then hi-hat, and then other overdub, crash, ride overdubs. Turns out I was doing the right thing (sort of) all along. Lovely vid!
was looking for a 80s hair band expansion pack for superior drummer 3. wasn't really seeing much so I started watching RUclips videos in order to tweak the standard Superior drummer kits. This video is very helpful!
When he played the Gated Ambience in the very beginning, it quickly reminded me of the beginning of Steve Winwood's "Higher Love"! It happened again at 10:21-10:24!
5:55 a couple of minutes of just this would be a literally perfect opening track for any 80s album. It’s insane how good that gated ambiance/reverb sound is.
Great stuff, Jake. I think people forget that the most important thing when recording drums is the actual drum and the raw sound. No amount of processing is gonna save a badly tuned kit, or inconsistent volume. Also, can you talk about avoiding getting your hihat sound into the snare mic, i always encourage drummers not to slam the hihat. You snare sounds damn clean.
You're right! I always try to stress this as much as I can. Get the drums sounding good for the song, then worry about the processing. RE: hihat ... I just try to play it softer and also position the mic so it rejects a lot of hihat.
And Prince was on record saying that he was influenced by what The Cocteau twins had done with drum machines and was obsessed with the drum sounds they achieved (which were run through guitar amplifiers and recorded to beef them up and other techniques that drove stuffy engineers of the time mad).
Hey jake’ I just wanted to say thankyou on behalf of all of us’ u are truly a great person and deserve the respect and compliments that anyone gives u’ I love the effort that u put in to your videos and it means a lot to me and I’m sure it means a lot to do many other drummers’ I just wish I could sneak u over to New Zealand where I am and have a beer etc........... 💨 and talk tech drum shit with u’ hopefully one day anyway’ but thankyou so much for all u do bro’ we all appreciate it so much 🤘🥁🤘
Those Remo CS... They're so cool when recorded, especially on concert toms. For the ultimate 80's snare sound you should have gone with a clear Pinstripe.
Great work. This one had me chuckling quite a bit-in a good way. And yeah, that third kit is pretty much what mine looked and sounded like in the ‘80s. I kind of miss that controlled Pinstripe-y sound sometimes. Kind of.
lol! I’m a bassist and I loved this. I came here to see how much of what I was hearing in 80s music is/was in fact drum machines ie: def lep- Photograph
Those drums sound gooood! Lately ive been trying to layer drums to get that 16th you were talking about with reverb...never thought of reverb as a instrument! Will incorporate this now!
Great video! super informative. As a rock drummer who grew up in the 80s, I think the ultimate drum sound is from KISS' 1982 album, Creatures of the Night. You don't have to like the band, but there is no denying the thunderous and heavy sound that Eric Carr delivered. Give it a listen...I dare you to tell me that the drums on that record are not some of the best you have heard! :) Keep on rocking.
I know literally nothing about playing drums, all I can do is program 4-on-the-floor in ableton, but I think the DAW stuff is top-notch. Also, your videos are fun as hell
First off thanks for a tutorial to my absolute favourite style of drum sounds. I don't play drums but use Superior Drummer for my productions and this helps me to achieve that sound. One more thing: the little fill you played at 6:11 instantly made me go to stank face. So awesome!
Thanks for the great stuff, Jake. You’re obviously very skilled at making drumsounds. I was wondering if you could shed your light on the drumsound of ‘Kissing my love’ by Bill Withers, with the great James Gadson on drums. Especially the snare sound. It’s a combination of gear and the player ofcourse, but still, I’d be very interested to see your take on this. Thanks for all you’ve put out so far. Appreciate it.
Dig🤘🤘I used to obsess the hell out of this when I first heard 80s thrash records, especially this one live version of a Napalm Death song If the Truth be known. The snare on that video probably holds the record for the the biggest most sustained gated sound ever, making even Def Leppard look like a post grunge band 😂😂 I remember blasting tons of god damn reverb on literally everything on ez drummer back when I programed drums. It kind of sounded cool but soon I realized it was not the best thing to do all the time, definitely not like that lol
Ah! This is SO helpful! I'm producing a big 80's inspired power ballad right now, and I have such a better idea on how I'll mix it now. I'm even having Andrew Synowiec play on it too!
Man, Im addicted to your videos now, wishing I was a drummer. Dont know if your going to see this, but I sent you an email with something I did with one of your drums. Hope you like it, and keep on the awesome work!
Damn Jake, you nailed it man! My son and I are recording a bunch of songs that I wrote in the 80s. Let me know if you'd be interested in playing on them. My brother was the original drummer but he no longer plays.
I was searching for "80s drums beat" (for me 80's drums it's just the "drop" for Phil Collins "In the air tonight" )and just "landed" in this video, this shit was entertaining and really well made, good job.
What's your favorite song from the 80s?
My favourite drummer of all times... Copeland's sound....and thanks for this video, it has a lot of info.
Sorry, without glasses I miss understood, one of my fav is Sincronicity II. Another sound...
New Sensation
Easy Lover - Phillip Bailey and Phil Collins
Love in the air tonights drums by phill collins, whitesnake hear i go again. But the 80's had so many good songs from alot of folks.
I'm pretty happy that we share a passion called Phil Collins

I only smash that like button if it has a gated reverb.

Momentary Lapse of Reason by Pink Floyd has some major verb on the drums. Tastes goooood

This video should be in the Library of Congress. It’s a national treasure.
I just woke up from the weirdest 80's dream....and stumbled into my studio and this was the first video that came up and its perfect. Excellent work.

The Smiths and The Cure drum sound please!
Never even thought to record shells and cymbals seperate. That is a game changer
That’s how they did Grohl’s drums on Songs For The Deaf, apparently.
your videos remind me that a good drummer makes such a difference when it comes to getting good drums sounds
Prince playing a Linndrum w/ one hand is the best 80's drummer!
I AGREE!
And Prince was on record saying that he was influenced by what The Cocteau twins had done with drum machines and was obsessed with the drum sounds they achieved (which were run through guitar amplifiers and recorded to beef them up and other techniques that drove stuffy engineers of the time mad).

4:32 You had me *"Super Puzzled"* for a second... *LOL!!! ;-D*
It wasn't the headband that convinced me he knew what he was talking about, it was the 80's 'stach' and 80's mullet that did it for me.
When you did the intro my mind went straight to Miami Vice ❤
