    So helpful to know the various labels/ names one type of method can be called!.. I personally would love a video going into detail about what tools you use for creating UXR Surveys and how you determine what kind of survey you are going to use for a specific research project. Love your channel!

    Actually, I spend learning about UX every day alongside my job hunting. So, now I plan to learn different layers of these methods as you said..

    Hey Aona, I just wanted to say this was a really great video, you were concise, informative and generous with your advice. Thank you! I'm a market researcher but I have seen increasing demand from clients to understand CX, UX and MR and how they intersect and I'm particularly interested in upskilling/learning more about UXR as I feel there's a lot of similarities in the skillset between the two professions. Thanks again! 😊

    Not gonna lie - I had to watch this video a few times and deeply google quite a bit of the vernacular you used when describing the background of the 3 types - It was very humbling knowing how high level my actual knowledge of these 3 types is vs. how the 3 types can be broken down into individual skills. This channel has given me everything I need to roadmap my own personal development as a new up-and-coming UXR.
    Background: I've been in the UX world as a self-taught generalist from the east coast, and I'm aiming to become a specialist in UXR. Your channel is one of the most important resources I've come across to help me get there. You're doing great work, Aona! Thanks again!

    Thanks for this! Though I haven't interviewed a ton of users, I have done over a hundred interviews for my podcast where I talk with high-profile strangers and ask them pretty vulnerable questions that they go deep with me on! I love podcasting for this reason - it is like an IDI. It's like one of my favorite things to do in life so this makes me more excited to go the direction of UXR after my PhD. I also worked at Qualtrics for a time and have a ton of experience in survey design. I helped dozens of researchers in both academia and business to design and set up their surveys and I have done a few of these in my grad program too. I just need to strengthen my Usability Testing and stats skills. This is super helpful stuff. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

    This is crazy helpful, thank you!! It’s nice to know that the foundations of UXR are used by advanced researchers - just more deeply and with more skill, it seems. I’m excited to practice variants of each method ^-^
    I’m curious: do you have any tips/resources to practice quantitative data analysis as applicable to UXR, besides grad school? Or would it be unhelpful to spend time learning beyond the basics of correlations/regressions?

    • @AonaTalks
      @AonaTalks  3 года назад +8

      I think it’s always worth learning about quant analysis if you’ve got time and passion - you might not see an immediate impact or application of those knowledge if you are not hired as a quantitativeUXR. But it will come in handy when “the time” comes! (I know, this sounds like I’m saying nothing - but those moments do come! And when they come, you’ll feel so smart because you know all about it already 😂) that said, if your goal is to become a mixed-method UXR who leans towards qual more, then choose your practice wisely - no need to get into the weeds of programming languages, doing statistical modeling (if you already know how to do it then nvm!), I think in-depth understanding of survey methodology and some knowledge around applied statistics, plus 1 tool (bonus point) you can use to perform analysis (eg SAS/SPSS/R) is more than enough

    • @christianeharris5642
      @christianeharris5642 3 года назад

      @@AonaTalks Wow, thanks so much for the detailed tips! Makes a lot of sense, too: as a mixed methods UXR, it definitely seems wise to have a solid foundation in surveys and the qual methods you talked about, then choose one stats tool to be able to use when the time comes. Thanks again!!

    I think survey and quantitative analysis with the survey data are two different things that go hand in hand but the learning curve for both of em is different. Survey questions and scales might be contextual and versatile (like the semi-structured question) but the quantitative analysis methods are fixed (Once you know how to apply them, it's kind of the same thing over various data). I'm naive but correct me if I'm wrong. I think this is why the mixed method approach is beautiful where qualitative and quantitative data go hand in hand.

    this was helpful but I think I jumped the gun, I'm still on week 3 of my Ux certificate and this was a beautiful reminder that patience is key :'D .

      I have to say survey methodology is such a massive universe (I only hold maybe 1% the knowledge) and I know some seasoned market researchers who have been advancing their survey skills for their whole career and still lots more to explore. Do not feel stressed out about it too much. My fav book on survey methodology (is also my textbook from grad school) is QUANTITATIVE Research Methods For Communications (I don’t read it page by page, mostly use it as a resource to go to whenever I have a specific question). I would recommend to take an online specialization class in survey methodology or applied statistics if you want to go more in-depth.

    I'm a designer, so watching this video and hearing about the skill and dedication involved makes me sweat. Trying new research methods can be scary to me. But as I work for smaller companies with no research team, there's no choice but to get stuck in and screw up. The alternative is to not talk to users. lol.
    Got any advice for designers that need to crossover from time to time?

    • @AonaTalks
      @AonaTalks  3 года назад +1

      Don’t sweat! Dedication comes from doing it repeatedly as well (you learn from your mistakes every time you do it ). The first good step is always to start talking to users! If you are a designer also performing research, usability interview + IDIs should be adequate to help you get started with talking to them.
