    Wow I'm impressed by your drive, not having a break since 15, I feel so privileged everyday because I live in a country where education is good and nowhere near as expensive as it's in the US. If that wasn't enough my home was really close the university and it was a public one, so my expenses were little. I need to hear this kind of stories to never forget to be grateful, thanks for sharing Selena.

    Wow, Selena! Yours is truly an inspiring path. I’m an aspiring economist myself (about to enter my last semester of college though I am considering taking additional classes in the winter) and I’m struggling a lot right now because I worry about my skills, very limited experience (I haven’t done any internships or long term jobs) and the fact that I’m an international student skyrockets the pressure

    DC workforce is tough. I also went there for an internship and was looking for jobs like crazy and ended up getting a temp to perm at a policy think tank. When my contract was almost coming up they were interviewing other super impressive Ivy type of ppl with crazy qualifications and they offered it to me 😊
    Y’all, don’t slack on temp positions!! In the unfortunate reality of not having equitable access to jobs, working hard in a temp position could really help land a permanent job that had requirements obviously catered to Ivy candidates.

    • @SelenaTrevino
      @SelenaTrevino  2 года назад

      It really is! It took me 1 year of internship experience and 1 year as a permanent employee before I landed my current job, not to mention my years of work experience prior. But I will say I was overlooked a many jobs simply because I did not go to an Ivy league school or a private university.
      Temp positions are amazing, I have worked many and they CAN be great. But also the experience I had at Columbia was as a temp. I think it was not only that I was a minority but also that I was a temp that I was treated as "less than". My father worked temp jobs for YEARS and was never hired on because he didn't have a bachelors, so it really really depends on the person and industry, whether a temp job will truly have potential to lead to a permanent job.
      With all of that said, I'm so happy you got the job, that is amazing! so proud of you

    Selena just came over here from your recent vlog. Your story is a privilege to hear and absorbing the adversities you faced. I got a sociology and communication major and wanted to be a lawyer for similar reasons as you and later found I was too empathetic. I wanted to fight and cry for everyone! I know I am a white woman with embedded privilege and you haven’t had the best experiences with white women but I am here, as a woman and ally. My education and hearing these experiences will grow me into a women who will not tolerate the treatment you and many Latinos face 💕
    Also was an RA and in Student Senate!!

      Thank you so much Lauren! While I have had bad experiences with white women in power, I've had more positive experiences with white friends and people in general, for the most part, so I choose to focus on that! Also, I feel that "wanting to cry for and fight for everyone" that would be me!
      Appreciate you and your support, we need more white allies doing the work to learn and teach others! As a non-black Latina I also have to put in the work to fight anti-blackness in our own community. Sending love!

    I'm speechless. I wasn't really expecting all of this. I love when people work with purpose. I'm so not shocked that you were an RA and clearly a well-liked one. You give off amazing RA vibes that I'm sure everyone in the dorms adored.
    As a Black woman in STEM, I felt every word you were saying about having to work 10x harder than others. It's no joke, the imposter syndrome is real, and it's hard. Really hard. But I've gotta keep going.

    I completely understand your standpoint of how your emotions might get in the way of your dreams. Looking into non profits again might definitely be the way to go! I think going to a larger area and doing a non profit for a bigger organization might fulfill you more. Even organizations that might not be big you can also help grow like how you did while in school. It would probably help you feel as if your life is more purposeful. Even using your RUclips platform could jump start your own non-profit organization. Your drive and determination will help you do bigger things than you probably can imagine for yourself. You could also look into being an advocate. A lot of these jobs don’t pay that much money but they’ll definitely make everyday feel like you’ve changed the world even a little.

    Oh my gosh as a first gen latina this story spoke volumes. I feel like as a first gen it feels like you need to always choose the right major to get a good job etc etc but this really alleviated my fears of this. I feel like there's so much I would like to do and your diverse skill set with your major makes me feel like there's so much out there! Im a Junior year Data Science major here at Portland State but I would like to get my masters in economics or related field. I'm trying to apply myself as much as possible by applying to research opportunities and internships etc. This gave me so much hope especially because nobody in my family has gone to college. Thank you so much!!

    I agree 💯 with you! I’m an Underwriter for a loan company, I been working for them for 11 months and the first manager I had was a white woman and she was always making my job hard, she got a promotion right away and they hired a new manager. So long story short, last week I made an error at work and she treated me like if I was less than a human or like if I committed a crime, she really made me feel like if I was worthless for just making one mistake. It’s so hard at this point to work at that company, but I want to find a better job before I quit. Thru all my work history in the past years, I cannot count by now how many times white woman managers have treated Hispanics and other minorities, like were less human.

      I'm so sorry this has been your experience. Unfortunately, knowing my family/friends' experiences, you are not alone at all! At the same time, I have known some amazing white women, some of whom I'm still friends with, so they're not al bad. However, sadly that doesn't change the fact that we continue to get mistreatment and it doesn't change our experiences. Sending you love, hope you're able to find anew job to leave your toxic work environment

I have one year to choose between studying applied economics or international relations with a minor in business and I still don't know which criteria to take into consideration. And I would like to ask you about it. I don't know where to start to be honest. Especially since I have no time to lose as I have to support myself and my family after I graduate

    • @SelenaTrevino
      @SelenaTrevino  Год назад

      Honestly that is a difficult decision! And since you have a time crunch I think the most important person you need to talk to is with yourself. Do some introspection and reflection about what you want your life and lifestyle to look like 3,5.10 years from now. Does pursuing a career as an economist take your towards your dream life? Or is there another career trajectory you’d prefer to try? (Just questions to ask yourself! You don’t need to answer me)❤️

    So interesting to hear about you experiences. You had so many jobs and interships that I cannot believe you are so young and experienced it all. 😅 So awesome 💕 I am so sorry to hear that you had a bad experience with your lady boss. People would think that since you are both women, she would lift you up instead of being rude. Since we don’t really have any immigrats at all, I don’t have any experience with it and I do not understand why would somebody think that the color of a skin or a place of birth would matter. I remember since I studied in English language, we had many Erasmus students and they were all different nations and colors and nobody treated them any different. I mean we always joked that you can tell which ones are from Russia because while we were wearing winter coats, they would wear hoodies but that was all in good fun. They made fun of us and we made fun of them. 😂😇 Even thought some would say that the students from Russia would be bullied because our countries have very complicated, brutal history full of horrible things and many dead Czechs but I think my generation understands that it was in the past and todays Russians are different. Same with Germans- some of the ones I met are really worried that people see them in the light of WW2 but that it not generally true. Well anyway, that doesn’t really have anything to do with your experiences but I thought I would share anyway hahah 😜 I wish you all the best in your career, it looks like you know what you want and you are very proactive in making it true. 💕 btw I love the little accent you have everytime you say some English-Spanish words. It is so cute 💕

    My general manager was a woman that was white and was recently hired. She made my life hell from the first day that we met. After working with my team for months she could never pronounce my name correctly. It got to the point where I knew she was purposely doing it. Eventually she was fired for her ways, it’s unfortunate that she chose not to perform her job and instead decided to tear others down. Glad she’s gone.

      Luckily, there was some sort of justice for your situation! I’m glad you’re no longer in an environment where you aren’t being included or welcomed as you are, we all deserve to be treated with respect & dignity. Sending love 🤍

    I'm Asian and I'm sorry that the Asian woman wasn't an ally to you. Part of me thinks it's because she was trying to blend in herself as the model minority.
