Just want to say THANK YOU! With these tips, I actually landed an interview with Spotify for a summer internship. I (like you) had applied over the last 2.5 years with no interviews. My interview is Friday and I’m so excited!
Also a fellow Taiwanese here 🙋♀️ got inspired by your experience and applied for two others roles at Spotify despite having a final paper that’s due tonight lol
looking at your resume only gives me huge peer pressure but also an enormous motivation to achieve my dream. leaving this comment here and i will comeback really soon to tell myself that i has also landed an internship at my dream company. manifesting and working hard!!!
thank you so much for sharing your experiences lilian! could you also please share your response to the question @5:00 during your Spotify interview and the questions you asked the interviewer?
Thank you for sharing your intership application process in details. I'm motivated to update my resume and start building my portfolio as well, even though I already have a full-time job. I also noticed from your resume, one of your clientele was Jay Park. I love his songs. I'd like to hear what kind of project you did for Jay Park, if you don't mind.
Hi :) Thank you for sharing your experiences🌱 . The question is, if we have some creative ideas about Spotify, in which part should we put them? CV? Portfolio or interview? Or is it better to send an email to the manager of the relevant department to present our idea? And how should we present the idea?
Great video, very helpful How did you land 5 different internships prior to getting your Spotify one? Most people typically only land 1 or 2 before their final year of college
Thanks for your question! It all came down to me applying to any relevant internships I could possibly find (I was applying to 30-50 internships every semester) and did that non-stop during my four years of college. I usually just searched words like ‘internship’ or ‘XYZ company internship’ from big names to start-ups. I didn’t have any referrals or personal connections, so I’d say the first 1-2 were the most rough b/c I had no leverage. Once I had 1-2 internships, it became relatively easier later on and it increased my chances to intern at bigger brands (again also got them by applying on their official job sites). At the same time, since I went to school at NYU, it was possible for me to pursue internships during semesters in between classes as well as during the summer so that def helped. I've seen that more companies are now hiring fall/summer interns during the semester (even virtually), so 2+ internships are definitely possible if you count all the semesters you have in college. all that being said - keep applying, and use spring/fall semesters to stack up internships!
Hey Lillian! A couple of questions on your video. 1. Did you use LaTeX for your resume? It looks great (and very similar to mine xD)! 1. On your tip #1, you said resumes that looks well show that you've invested time making it stand out. But don't you think these kind of resumes will make it hard to pass through the automated resume scanning software? I've heard simple and latex-based resumes work well for this reason. PS: I have no connection to the music industry. Don't know why I watched your video but it is really good. Your editing lol. Congrats and good luck for you channel
Hey got a few questions. 1) so how did you answer the Latem interview questions? 2) what were the 3 questions you asked? 3? Last one, did you learn any analyst tool(SQL/tableau/etc) prior to the insternship? Thanks!
For (1) approaching it from a consulting lens I would bucket the question into a couple of frameworks - market landscape (segmentation of LATAM by genre of music, customers, platforms of music streaming, growth rates in the region) - competitive landscape (who are the competing players in LATAM, their growth rates, potential threats & new entrants, and differentiating factors) - profitability (assess the revenue & costs of Spotify in LATAM) - customer (assess customer retention strategies and acquisition of new customers, customer preferences in that region I.e genre of music, and channels in which they stream their music) Obviously this was super long and there are many things to think about but, i suppose that’s what you can consider for the first question after analyzing those buckets
thanks for your question Hamsin! 1) Antho's comment below is perfect, like he laid out, the most important part is having a framework to apporach the problem, then from there walk your interviewer through your final business recommendation. I structured my answers based on A) user behavior in LatAm and B) competitive landscape. from a user behavior pov, I read about how users in LatAm are very drawn to video format and from a competitive landscape pov, big release moments tend to 'blow up' on RUclips first (bc of music videos), which benefits RUclips' user acquisition + engagement as opposed to Spotify. with that being said, i suggested that we can drive user growth by enhancing the product + content experience on Spotify especially during big releases moments because that's where we could easily get millions of users on the platform. From there, I laid out 2 strategies: 1) more video-format content and 2) exclusive content focusing on major artist releases! (also I studied up on the latam market, competitive landscape, etc prior to the interview so I have the market context) 2) i still ask these 3 types questions to this day for every interview: question1: I read that LatAm is one of Spotify's fastest growing markets. What are the current vision and goals for the Strategy Ops team to help drive growth in the region? (shows that I took the time to research about the company, and that I am trying to think about it from a biz pov) question 2: what are some traits that you've seen that have allowed people to succeed in this role? (shows that i'm already preparing myself for the job) question 3: I know it's been alot of me talking, I'd love to know what's your favoriate part about working at Spotify? (eases the tension during the interview, ppl love talking about these type of things and it helps end the interview on a good note!) 3) I didn't, so with question #2 above when I asked in the interview, my manager told me SQL will be used so before the internship started, I started to learn SQL myself for 2 months (took a 1-day bootcamp on General Assembly, and the free Intro to SQL classes on DataCamp) which def helped! lengthy answer- but hope this helps!
Do you have any tips for applying to Spotify as an external hire? I got rejected from all of the Spotify internships that I applied to in college but have since graduated and gained some experience working in marketing at another tech company. I’m still hoping to work at Spotify someday, so I regularly check the Spotify career site for marketing/sales roles but there aren’t a lot of opportunities where i fit all of the qualifications. Curious if there is any advice or suggestions you have for non students looking to work at Spotify! Thank you!
Hi! How long does it usually take for them to review applications?? I applied on their site within 2 days of a job being posted but they haven’t even viewed my site yet (I’ve been checking analytics lol) do they wait a few weeks before looking at resumes and portfolios? 🤞🤞🤞 (it’s been about a week now!)

Hey ! I'm just super stressed right now about the internship thing right now . I'm currently in 2nd year of my undergraduate and I have not done a single internship yet. For applying for the internship they ask for previous intership experience. But the fact is not everyone has done one. Someone will start somewhere . So , I'm basically stuck how to get my first internship so that it can open more doors of opportunities for me ✨ Any tips on resume building to get First internship?✨
Hi Aastha! thank you for your question and first of all, you are okay and you will be fine 😇 - starting in your 2nd year is definitely note late. in fact, this is the perfect time to start! In terms of finding your first internship - apply anywhere and everywhere. I was applying to 30-50 internships every semester just to land 1, it really is a numbers game. I would recommend looking into your local startups & smaller companies to see if they have internship listings on their websites, or you can reach out to them directly. Most of the time, people love having an extra hand to help out. also, it's okay if your first few internships are not as 'glamorous' bc like you said too, everyone starts somewhere. for me, my first internship was literally me translating youtube videos for a startup and my first few after that were unpaid. but yes, one thing led to another, it does take some time and work but you will get there! In terms of building your resume for your first internship - if you don't have any internship to speak about, try to include any volunteering experiences, extracurricular, leadership positions you're involved in in school (but give a professional touch to it. i.e. if you are the marketing director for a club on campus, how many events did you put out? how much engagement did you drive to campus events? what skills/softwares do you use?) . In terms of the actual resume writing part, one thing I do still to this day is tailoring the words I use in the resume based on the job description, or find people on linkedin who may have similar job titles and see how they articulate their role in the experience section. that way I can make sure I explain my experiences in a way people are more likely to resonate with. I hope this is helpful - will also make a video more on this. In the meantime, goodluck with your journey, and you got this!

Hi! I’m not American so I don’t really understand how internships works but I would like to know if I can do a internship as a high schooler. (Obviously not at Spotify, since I’m not that qualified, but maybe at another company)
Generally companies don't hire high schoolers (age req is usually 18) and most of the time they require that you're enrolled in an accredited university, but honestly shotgunning applications to see what you can land isn't a bad idea, as long as your resume has some job experiences in it.

absolutely! in fact I haven't really met anyone who really comes from a music background at Spotify. people come from all types of backgrounds and majors
Heyyy! Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I'm an international student studying in the States, and was wondering if Spotify offers sponsorship> btw I am also Taiwanese;)
I fucking want this kind of job but there's no way I'd work in New York because comparing to my country (Portugal) things are expensive in USA, so I'd really see Sweden with some better eyes if you know what I mean. The problem is that most part of the jobs in Spotify that I really would like to work aren't available at the moment, and I don't know when they'll become available. And also because I ain't sure if I'd be able to live in Sweden alone.
such a good question! As an international student myself, yes they do sponsor H1b. I was on OPT when I interned with them, and they filed for my H1B (+lottery) once I converted to full-time. I know job hunting is extremely painful for international students -- you got this and all the best to you!
