a lot to cover and very little time. the 7 years (french Indian) war, Napoleonic wars, WWI,... are all glossed over in both US and world history classes that and there are certain groups that don't want to show guns in a positive lite but I wish stories like this were in the sidebars of our history textbooks.

It's often important not to forget that history in school is divided between american, state and local history through various grades. It's eeked out in bits to suit the grade levels. Anything beyond that is floated to elective classes one can take in high school and beyond. While it's important to be inclusive about the good and bad in US and state history, there is a lot of it and to decry missed opportunities that we, we could have, ourselves missed out of in learning this stuff, is on us. This in-depth history is available in school, if only as an elective. If one to ignore the many options in university, well that's because we really didn't care, and that has to be learned this way, or by our elders.

My wife is full Lumber. When I showed this video, she knew all about this incident. And she was adopted at a very young age by an awesome non-native family.
The Lumber people are very interesting and have an amazing history of self betterment and growth. They have had a history of independence when many native peoples did not. From the 1500"s onward they were never subjected the the level of outside control that most others were. They had their own bank and their own university. Most were literate long before most other native people were. And the Lumbees were often looked on and accepted as regular members of society long before others.

My state has a law requiring you to go to the Sheriff and get a permit to buy a pistol. It is a Jim Crow law that is still on the books. My Father kept his first pistol permit as a memento. On it, part of the text says that the permit holder is "known to the Sheriff to be of good character." In reality, it was a way to prevent Black people from buying guns. Most of my state's Legislature was elected in part because of their supposed pro gun stance, but there has been no move whatsoever to get rid of this Jim Crow law.

@Aniquin NC also for a while was one of the states that required you to either get permission or inform (forgot which) your CLEO of machine gun purchases regardless of what the current federal legislation was at the time (ie: trust could avoid CLEO).
actually, that still might be the case, NC isn't an incredibly pro-gun state but it's still not as bad as like NJ, NYC, or Cali.
it's honestly just not a good state overall. too many people, not enough land, cities aren't *really* cities, humid, income tax, very much so a purple state with corrupt official on all sides, poorly funded public education system with many politicians being anti-education. the whole state I attribute to being like a "rural home owners association."

As a constitutional lawyer he takes it as given that American citizens living in the United States and its territories have a right to own firearms and he further affirms that the 2nd amendment is a recognition of a right to resist tyranny by other "arms" as well, which has been eroded by the paramilitarization of police to become enforcers of the state who firearms are simply insufficient to resist when they enforce tyranny. Firearms as a self-defense against criminal is quite valid but is wholly out-dated when it comes to tyrannical governments.
We aren't living in a time where the army is using similar weapon as civilian firearms. And modern military weapon is very complex that your average citizen would not know how to use competently if at all.
OP is correct. Gun laws, in the past, today and in the future have always been about putting it in the right hands and keeping it away from the wrong hands. Laws have to strike a balance, where that balance lies is a point of contention.
Whenever a gun law proposal is made, pro-gun people think it's complete removal of guns when that is not the case if you look at the finer details. The opposite is true, when gun laws are relaxed, the anti-gun people think it is supporting anarchy. The reality is that laws are changed to match the times we live in to strike that balance. We can strike that perfect balance but people will never be satisfied because everyone's opinion is different, even among the same camps.

As a European I had an idea about the struggle for civil rights but never knew anything about battles like this.
Thanks a lot Karl for bringing this to my attention and i hope you will continue this series, because i got no doubt there are more stories like this that deserves to more attention.

Absolutely love these videos and massive respect to you for making them. You are absolutely right about how so much of the gun industry promotes self defense and protecting yourself but completely ignores how important that is to the civil rights movement.
Thanks for always being such an impartial presenter but still presenting meaningful content and clearly sharing your opinion in a meaningful way.

There’s 550 million firearms in world wide circulation, that’s one gun for every 12 people. The only question is, how do we arm the other 11?

    • @vanboy5697
      @vanboy5697 4 года назад +1

Way way more than that indeed, it's just not for the civilians to use. As a conscript, me and my peers were obligated to carry a fully automatic HK rifle, learn how to use a FN machine gun etc. to guard the country's borders for free, as a civilian rifled firearms are not even an option for a hunting license and smoothbores require limited time licenses.

6:13 is something I whole heartly agree on. Because when such a thing is done all you do is highlight and create a division, by presenting the idea that they're their own group or separate from us.

Karl, I've been supportive(or rather, as supportive I can be) of InRange as a project since the very beginning. Some of my favorite content has always been the historical vignettes, and this has to be my favorite one so far. I can't wait to see what you've got in store for us. Thank you for putting out this content. I am a professionally trained historian. Throughout ten years of higher education, I didn't learn about this type of history until graduate school, and even then in only a few courses. I can count them all on one hand. This type of American history is vastly more important on balance, I think, than what is typically taught in the standard survey classes that so many of our nation's students take for a semester and totally forget later on. Historical literacy is so incredibly important, and it's incredible that you're doing this work. Please, keep it up.

Life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness and the right to self defense of said life, liberty and pursuit of happiness is universal. Not racial, along religious lines, orientation, income or anything.
It's sad that people will be gung ho about such things, but then add in "except THOSE people."
