    I knew a couple of the men who were there that night. The historical records are accurate but incomplete. The KKK led by "Catfish" Cole was there in what they considered large numbers. They were not prepared for the appearance of so many Lumbee's who had had enough intimidation, violence, discrimination, and hatred fomented by "Catfish" Cole and his fellow klansmen. Cole believed the Lumbee Indians were biologically and socially beneath whites and he took any opportunity to expound his racist and ignorant beliefs. He believed the rally would "teach" the Indians a lesson but the tables were turned when he and the cowards realized they were being confronted by some very angry and a few intoxicated Indians standing up to the KKK.
    No one was killed or shot but there were some klan robes that were shredded when the cowards turned and run pursued by a knife wielding Lumbee Indian cutting the backside of the robe into silk ribbons. This did happen but was never included in the official reports. The individual who told me about it was there, scared out of his mind, hiding in a ditch watching the entire event after the Lumbee Indians showed up in force. The other person I knew confirmed what the other individual told me in a separate conversation.
    The Lumbee's were armed and ready for violence if the KKK tried any on them. The sheriff was there long enough to warn everyone about using guns or starting trouble.
    I was in high school at the time and on Monday after Hays Pond, there was a discussion and we learned that it made news in Moscow and other countries.
    Memories can fade and events become something different that what actually happened. Historical events can be interpreted in different ways after they happen and in some small ways, Hayes Pond stories vary. My Dad and the unofficial leader of the Lumbee Indians at the time were close friends. The actual vs. the now official version of events is slightly different depending on who is telling the story. But in the end, Hayes Pond Battle did stop the KKK from holding another public rally in Robeson County and how can that ever be a bad thing?

      @@johnnylocklear3129 Given enough alcohol, processed sugar-laden JUNK food, drugs, & money, the MADNESS of colonization can INFECT the Indigenous Warrior Spirit to a raging delusion...calling others to actually JOIN the white male supremacist domestic terrorists that rape their own white girls and white women marching to NAZI principles under MAGA vermin like Trump or Corporate Dems who act like "good guys" like President Joe Biden. BOTH care NOTHING for ANYONE save their own white male supremacist power-HUNGRY GREED DRIVEN narcissistic interests that INCLUDE genocidal policies and practices that further HARM all the People and PROFIT the 1% hierarchy that actually fund and control all candidates who end up with decision making white male privilege. SOBER thinking Lumbee Warriors who are AWAKENED know that following after MAGA Republicans or Corporate Dems like puppets is INSANITY, so we must PRAY for guidance and PREPARE and SUPPORT our OWN Indigenous political candidates who must lead as TRUE TRUTH-TELLING Warrior LEADERS as we decolonize and HEAL our People.

    Listen very carefully to his message. He didn't say, we are the chosen ones, we are special in a sense similar to those who claim. Unfortunately, many Tribes collectively and individually are caught in a state of euphonium waiting for a miracle to materialize. He said we individually among ourselves can apply love rather than hate...What a dignified man, be more to his spirit...

      @@michellecarter5396 Nope - mistakenly added to the census as Cherokee in the late 1800s. Census takers added anyone who was Indian as Cherokee regardless of what tribe. The Cherokee have been fighting against Lumbee recognition for years. There's been some intermarriage throughout the years, but other than that, the people are not connected.

    I cannot help but interject about what constitutes a historical battle. The perception of this ceremony is that this was a significant battle, like the Battle of Little Bighorn. In my opinion it is just a racial conflict that resulted in a skirmish. There were no definitive sides waging a war against each other. It was a racist rally that was protested and resulted in physical confrontation. Why is this considered a battle when what happened at Wounded Knee in the 1970s is referred to as an incident or occupation? There is no prevalence involved in this and it no different than what is happening now with people standing up to racism. It is a historical account as far as resistance against white supremacy but it should not be considered a historical Native battle.

    • @bijoumori7339
      @bijoumori7339 5 лет назад +7

      It's historic because that community decided it was. You may not see it as such but guess what you don't have to. This was a community coming together to keep hate out of their community. Anytime you have armed conflict it's a battle. What I want to know is why you making an issue out of something that has nothing to do with you?
