I don't mean to put a dark cloud over anything, but I must ask...if you were at Criterion at this point, there a few almost conflicting versions of how Jim Gordon was acting. This seems to be around the time that possibly people would notice the onset of little flashes of abnormality in him..maybe just a second or two, and I regard his stealing the piano coda from Rita Coolidge to get his name on credit seems odd in itself. An unspecified rift between he and Clapton was taking shape at that point as well. I was wondering if you had any memories of Jim lashing out or acting strange in any way. Just anything that might had caught your attention.

Duane Allman was the greatest guitar player that the music industry has ever seen or heard. When it comes to Hendrix, Vaughn, Santana and Clapton Duane passed them all. These great musicians played almost all of their lives even regrettably some didn't live long lives. But they played for more than 10 years. Duane only was playing his AX for almost 7 years and slide for 3. Imagine if he had taken up the guitar at the same age as all these phenomenal musicians did. Then you would have to agree that he was the most gifted guitarist in the history of music, whether it was rock, southern white blues, country or however the industry wants to classify Allman's kind of music. Thank you Duane Allman for the joy you brought to millions in just the too short time that you were here.

Eric Clapton did not help write this song, Rita Coolidge wrote it and played it with The drummer Jim Gordon. Jim Gordon stole the song claimed it was his. The drummer stole the song. She confronted all of the band members, but Clapton’s manager Stigwood threaten to make her life impossible in the music industries. Duane just agreed to play on the album with Bobby Whitlock and others. Duane had no part in it. Eric Clapton and the took the credit for the song. Duane made the great and famous due to his guitar skills. Clapton is over rated always has been.

I was a 19 yr old kid in 2002. My stepdad had just been killed in a private airplane accident.
After his funeral, i drove out to his hangar that he owned with his buddy, filled with their airplanes. I had to see it one last time before the lawyers took it all away. I sat there choking back tears, watching planes takeoff and land for 20 minutes. When i cranked my truck to leave, the radio was on LA105.3 classic rock, and Layla was playing right at 3:12.
That melody has such a feeling of closure for me after that. It felt like saying goodbye. I love this song.

One of the most popular songs in Rock and Roll. Duane comes into this song about midway thru but if you listen carefully you can say to yourself. yes that is Duane on the slide. Only lived to age 24 but what a magnificent talent. Greg Allman his brother took over the band after Duane passed and they are one of my favorite bands. Give the album Eat A Peach a spin you will know what I mean. Melissa, Blue Sky, and of course the epic monster Mountain Jam. No other band in the 70s sounded like them, they were just too damn good.

Clapton became a guitar diva who had to be the centerpiece. Duane Allman was never that way. Cigarette in mouth, dressed like a flower child, he simply occupied his guitar’s soul and played.

The history of this song is quite simple. The original version of the song is what you hear on Clapton Unplugged acoustic. The famous version of this song is right here. It's when Duane said, hey lets' add this riff, hey lets speed this up - and he frankly went on to dominate much of the Derek & Dominoes album. And I say this with the utmost respect to Eric. Bell Bottom Blues is amazing Clapton. But Little Wing is all Duane and Why Does Love Have to Be So Sad Again Is Duane Scorching His Way Thru. Everyone knows the deal. Skydog and Hendrix would have been a treat. Skydog was one of the few in Jimmy's stratosphere.

I believe at times they were doing the same lead. But also Duane played the slide part which of course is amazing. Don't forget that the piano "break" was written by Jim Gordon, the drummer, I think, and it is fantastic as well. Great album "Derek and the Dominos." We played that thing, when it first came out, over and over, until we wore grooves in the record.

    • @yogibear6363

Wrong on Jim Gordon. The piano riff was written by Rita Coolidge, who was cheated out of her share of the royalties.

Yes Layla while written by Eric was totally recreated and changed with the up-tempo riff by Duane as well as the long slide at the end - but if that wasn't commanding enough - Why Does Love have To Be So Sad to me is the song on the album where Duane goes into beast attack mode and really dominates the whole song and burns Eric a new a-hole. And I know its not a competition and they are just musicians digging each other - - that is simply for the Eric is God crowd.
