Duane is the GOAT in my opinion. There are many great guitar players but to me he is the only one who could sit in with literally anyone. He always plays the right notes at the right time.
It's not what you play, it's how you play it. Duane is one of my favs (I always go between Dave Gilmour and he after Hendrix) because he just smashes every note. From bends to slides to vibrato, everything moves and it moves you. Everyone should play and sing just like this. :) Be the wizard that makes the whole crowd feel it and you'll be adored.
duane was not a goat. he was my hero.. i still have a fender in the front room. i don't think duane was keen on strats, but they are easy to play and i am lazy
I was in the second row, center. My friend from the Army was the stage manager of the Fillmore East. After the show I was taken back stage and introduced to the band and later went on to play the blues harp with the Duane Allman band when they were in Florida. I still play with the lead guitarist, Dan Toler, from time to time. Such a shame Duane and Berry Oakley were lost so young.
I love 71 dead. For me, this was their best year--raw, vocals were getting dialed in, straight ahead rock and roll with just the right amount of blues and country. Best damn bar band in the universe from 1970 to 1972.
@SuperFirewire1 Are you kidding? Jerry and Duane are trading licks without stepping on each other all the way through this magnificent piece. You can tell the difference -- all of their different vocabularies are in there. Listen to the different ways they slide up to the notes -- Duane's slide work is unmistakeable and inimitable. That is Bob Weir on the rhythm. And some sweet harp by Pigpen. This is a real treasure -- thanks so much for posting it.
Duane played slide for alot of bands & singers. Everybody wanted him cause he was the best. And he hasn't been equaled since. RIP Skydog. You are missed terribly.

Holy shit... my heart skipped a beat as I read the title for this video. This is pretty much my dream. Duane Allman playing on Hurts Me Too. God... possibly the greatest video on RUclips.
That's really really cool. Check out in the area under the video there's a link to live archive with the rest of the show. Duane played on 3 tunes that night, I think. This was the best imo, which is why i uploaded it.

Jerry and Duane jamming together-what a WONDERFUL gift to the world. Glad you found this and even more glad you shared this amazing piece of RocknRoll/Blues History
Ahhh the sound of The Grateful Dead. There was nothing like it. It was a spirit they had. It was magic. And to hear Duane Allman playing with them, I don't care if it was out or tune or whatever, it's priceless. Thank you for sharing💕
The great DUANE ALLMAN with THE GRATEFUL DEAD in 1971. I got to see them in concert at VANDERBILT STADIUM in Nashville that very same year! 1 of greatest concerts to start out my lifetime of a devoted concert participant! Duane was so much better than JERRY GARCIA! RIP TO 2 GREAT LEGENDS! You can sure tell that's DUNAE PICKING!! GREAT MEMORIES!!
He is absolutely awesome. In this tune, he pulled them back into the song, when it wandered off at times, by playing lead on the bass. Only Phil.could do that.
19 people didn't like it? Lol! Grateful Dead WITH Duane Allman?? Maybe it's informal, or late night, or an out take... I dunno... But c'mon, man! Its priceless!😳😁
went down to atlanta in 69 a deadhead.... allmans a local group playing around.... sat just feet from duane in piedmont park while he played ....i thought wow these local bands are pretty good .... saw the allmans jam with goose creek in a local club that summer

The B&W photo of the Grateful Dead is in San Francisco, in the 60s. Remember that time period with great nostalgia! Grateful Dead were awesome and so was Duane Allman. He left this life too soon.. as did a lot of greats! Glad this was recorded and whoever posted this, I thank you! Great music!
The amazing part of the 2-11-70 Fillmore jam was 'Spanish Jam,'featuring Jerry Garcia, Peter Green, & Duane jamming, that led into 'Turn on your Lovelight'... BLISS..
Thanks! Liked and subscribed! Duane is always fantastic, and it was interesting to hear his interaction with Phil's unique style playing a Blues Standard. Pigpen's singing and harmonica on this tune makes me cry.
What an era to have fun. (just look at any BGP Fillmore posters you can see that) I saw my 1st GD show in 1985 but the fun had been clearly on for quite a long while before then. 10 blessed years I got off at the bus stop in 1995, payed respects at FareTheeWell and now for the last 3 years for me a spark is lit again and try to see D&Co. wherever I can. All I have to say is thank fucking god not everyone gets the magic.... I personally never try to convince anyone that the Dead hold the good stuff. It's enough that I know they do. Some people don't understand that 1 note from Jerry (1 forgotten Weir lyric even, etc...) to my family and to afflicted Deadheads carries tons more power than 1000 notes perfectly placed just so from (insert guitar god here). Is Mayer dumbing down? I don't think so. I think we can all agree he's paying homage to someone he respects and humbly filling big ass shoes. The songs will live on, my hope is the pixie dust does too. Is this the best Hurts me Too? doesn't matter if it's mine but I'm glad to know it's some folks. Duane better than Jerry? What kind of stupid comment is that? So stupid I wasted 10 minutes of my life ranting so I guess I'm the stupid
@1bestguitaristever @inhousevideo - I'm just glad Duane, Elmore the Dead and others took the time to play this music and share it with us. Wishing everyone here a very happy new year.
The Grateful Dead and The Allman Brothers were/are band with the genius of being able to construct melody. Few bands today, or for that matter, few in history have been able to do that consistently, especially live. The Band was also such a group and, if not for various mood-enhancers unique to each band, one of the greatest concerts on American soil should have been at Watkins Glen (reported 600,000 in attendance) in the summer of "73.

@chasefukuoka61 Thanks for that one too! That Lovelight is epic. Hard to pick out who's who at times with all the musicians playing. The spanish jam is good too!
I think if Pig had not passed, the Dead would be much different. But not in a bad way. He had a lot of heart, and basically carried them through their very early years. Here's to Ron "Pigpen" McKernan. RIP.
@IslaGC09 - you're most very welcome. There's also a killer Lovelight you might like from 1970 (its the video response below) with Greg Allman and Pigpen sharing vocals, Jerry, Duane and others on guitars...
This is a find. Hey I was in the first row for this show. I was the Lucky kid who went to the Fillmore East without a ticket. Somebody said they had an extra. I always wanted to hear this again. This might have been the Tuesday night of the Dead's farewell to the Fillmore 5 night run. Not exactly on fire but fun and it's Pigpen. The next tune Duane played on was Sugar Magnolia and I don't believe it was all that special yet sure makes want to hear that one too. Just two tunes for Duane.
Yes Ron McK does a fine job on this-of course Duane really adds some sweet slide icing on this bluesy cake. First time I've heard this version, and I grew up on the GD. Much different than the post-Pigpen version on Europe '72 where Garcia sang lead. Garcia really lays back until his solo, even letting Weir predominate on the chordal backup (and he does a pretty good job too, if just a bit too forward in the mix. Nice recording job by the Dead crew- the Bear, Stanley Owsley (the Acid King of San Francisco) kept their sound on the cutting edge.
Duane is the GOAT in my opinion. There are many great guitar players but to me he is the only one who could sit in with literally anyone. He always plays the right notes at the right time.
Jerry is right up there with Duane he makes wrong notes into right ones like fuckin houdini
It's not what you play, it's how you play it. Duane is one of my favs (I always go between Dave Gilmour and he after Hendrix) because he just smashes every note. This is a gem! There’s no denying that’s Duane playing slide. Great blues
Duane and Jerry just so relaxed and trusting of each other. Lots of humility gratitude and just living in the moment
